What tarot decks does everyone have and some on your wish list?

Got 3 or 4 of the decks I'd been eyeing for along time so don't have many on my wish list. But for some reason right now I'm more into the oracle type cards. Having lots of fun with my symbolon deck!!! :P

Scorpion  27 Jan 2002
Think I'll get in quick as although I may have too many decks to use myself I know I don't compare with some of the others - I think I saw someone mention they have over 300 decks (or was it 400)!

and
Templar
oh, yes, and the gorgeous looking Chakra cards (not the Chakra Tarot but done by the same artist)

Pollux  28 Jan 2002
Well, ma list is quite short! :'(

I HAVE { U = unratable, P = present, B = bought }:
Rider-Waite................................U B
Visconti-Sforza......................++++ B
Tarocchi Celtici (Tuan)............++++ P
Tarocchi di Nefertari (alasi ???)....--- P (bleah!)
Tarocchi di Mantegna ................++ B

I LONG FOR:
Acquarian............+++++
New Palladini........+++++
Osho Zen............+++ (I still haven't one, yes! :p )
Bosch.................++
Thot...................+ (I'm still unexperienced)
Shakespeare........+ (freak!!!)

Melvis  28 Jan 2002
Hey,

I won't list all 40 (or is it 41?), but I will list some of my favorites:
Rohrig - Now that I have the book that goes with it, it has a lot more meaning for readings.
Bosch - OK, I know there are things sticking out of people's bums in this deck, but I've actually done some great readings with it, so I like it!
Osho Zen - This is my favorite deck for reading with new people...it's very easy for people I've worked with to 'get' the pictures and meanings.
Tarokado - Very odd deck I got on Ebay (for too much $$!). It's done by a french-canadian artist (Robert Cadot, I think), and the majors are all in color with black-and-white minors. The LWB is in french, which I can partially understand, but there is a book that supposedly goes with it that I've never been able to find. The minors are rather confusing (too much detail), but I love the majors.
Cosmic Tribe - LOVE this one!
Legend: Arthurian - Best 'theme' deck I've encountered.
Whimsical - I wish I'd had this deck when I was learning Tarot! It's so easy to relate the fairy tales that I've heard since childhood to the Tarot card meanings.

Wish List:
World Spirit, Thoth (One that's not green! :( Yuck!), Robin Wood w/book, Feng Shui, and just about anything from Tarot Garden's Gallery pages!

Peace,

Melvis

P.S. I just remembered...it's 43 decks because I just got the Druid Animal Oracle Cards and the Celtic Book of the Dead Cards at my local used bookstore!

Jewel  29 Jan 2002
I am going to follow Melivis' example and only list a few of my favorites (I have about 61 or 62 decks): Cosmic Tribe, Robin Wood, Old Path, Ananda, Thoth (large swiss and small US games), Arcus Arcanum, Celtic (deburgh), Templar, Tarot for Cats, Sacred Circle, Londa, Shapeshifter, Buckland Romani, Wicca 2000, Navigators of the Mystic SEA, Taort of the Ages, Haindl, Symbolon, Sephiroth, New Palladini, Spiral, Merry Day, Nigel Jackson, Universal Waite, Hanson-Roberts, Sacred Rose. BOTA (color your own Tarot!) ....

My want list is ever growing ... I want them all *ROFLMAO* ... however, here are a few I want: Amber, Alchemical, Jasniak, Crystal, Steele Wizzard, Stone, World Spirit and Wheel of Change and Servants of the Light. WARNING: "this wish list is much longer than it appears." *LOL*

Darn now I am getting the itch to go purchase a Tarot deck now ....

Love & Light,

Logiatrix  29 Jan 2002
i'll just list my faves, too. i can't possibly rate them--i favor each of them for different reasons...

1JJ (swiss)
animal-wise
celtic wisdom
connolly
diamond
daughters of the moon
feng-shui
healing with the angels/fairies
legend (the arthurian tarot)
light and shadow
medicine woman
medieval scapini
morgan-greer
renaissance (williams)
visconti-sforza
zerner-farber

...and i recently acquired the healing earth deck, which was BIG on my wish list. it's out-of-print, so finding it was very nifty. it's quickly becoming a favorite, as i slowly bond with it.
i'm hoping to add the orishas, buckland romani, and the crystal tarots someday. i think the search is as--if not more--enjoyable than the final acquisition!

divinerguy  29 Jan 2002
Hey Taz,

I've also got Daughters of the Moon, and its an awesome deck. Very earthy flavor.

I know a place that's got a used Salvador Dali deck in great condition. They're asking $50 for it. That's a lot of money, but I've been told the thing sold for $100 when it was new.

What do you think?

Gary

Mateo06  29 Jan 2002
Wow. I thought it unusual to have more than like 2 decks. You guys must have spent hundreds if not thousands on these decks. I am reluctant to buy my 2nd deck. let alone my 15th or 20th. Hopefully i'll get up enough courage to get the sacred circle deck. then maybe Dragon Tarot, but i haven't seen many decks out there that i actually like. Does anyone have any recommendations?

faunabay  29 Jan 2002
divinerguy, from what I've seen on ebay the Dali decks are running around $75 I think.

And Mateo06, don't get us all started. LOL Look at how many decks we all own! You'll have a million decks that people say you have to buy. :) Be prepared to start a bit collection. :P

Greenman  30 Jan 2002
if you can get the Dali deck for 50 bucks (and you really like it), then i say grab it! that's a great price if the condition is good.
remember, this thing has gilt edges, and the box is leatherbound. it truly is beautiful, i just wish that Dali knew a little more about the tarot before he did this. but since he died not too long after finishing it, we should probably be grateful it exists at all.
in any case, it's 78 original Dali prints, and that's worth the price right there!

an interesting aside;
Dali hated the idea of an artist's work being valuable only after their death. so to thwart that, he signed thousands of blank canvases before he died. therefore having a Dali painting with a genuine signature is no guarantee of authenticity.
and there's a part of me that applauds this idea!

Kaleidoscope Eyes  01 Feb 2002
Okay, this thread has gotten long, so I'll keep my input short. I have:

Rider-Waite-Smith
Spiral Tarot
Chinese tarot(Jui Guoliang)
The Secret Tarot (Lyle)
The Universal Tarot
Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg

...and just for kicks, The Wonderland Tarot. I have had The Hermetic Tarot for years, but recently sold it for a good price. (Was I bad?)

I want:
Nothing, really, unless I can run down some Necromantic Tarot cards. But I hear they are rare. Most other decks just don't really do much for me, believe it or not. I mightn't mind having a French or Italian game playing deck, if I can locate one I really like.

For the most part, the deck I *most* desire is the one I'm at last working on: my very own deck! Thanks to the First Aeclectic Collective Tarot (F.A.C.T.) project, which I participated in, I have been inspired to keep creating cards, and now have 15 Major Arcana cards finished... plus two new minors, in addition to the two I did for FACT.

silvereye  02 Feb 2002
I have:
Lovers Tarot Chinese version
Tarot of Cat People
Art Nouveau Tarot
Thoth Tarot
Osho Zen Tarot
Vampire Tarot
Russian Tarot of St Petersberg
Elle Tarot

Zac  02 Feb 2002
I only have The Dragon Tarot (Which isn't at all good, imho.), the Legend:The Arthurian tarot (It's beautiful, but you have to know your Arthur pretty well to make heads or tails of it.), and the standard Rider-Waite (I like it best, but it's been "loved" to peices.) and the "healing with the Angels" oracle (just a tad corny.)
I desperately want:
The Miracle Tarot (but for $45??? Geez!)
The Osho-Zen
The Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg
The Londa Tarot (Anyone have it? Is it really as good as it looks?)
The Faerie Oracle (I have NO idea if I spelled that right.)
The Celtic Dragon (I desperately want a good dragon deck)
The Unicorn Tarot
I think that's it... most of it... some of it.... I have a problem... lol. Does anyone know how much it sux to be 17 and broke? :P

Greenman  02 Feb 2002
Zac,
does it suck more than being 46 and broke?

. ;P good point Greenman!
Pollux, I like the chinese tarot very much. But I haven't worked with it much at all , so I cannot comment on that too much. However, I can see working with it . I think it is very well done, like the artwork, unique , even has a sense of humour.
The celtic dragon tarot I am ambivalent about . It is just too cutesy! However , I have worked with it a little bit . I can't seem to give it up either , and the book that comes with the set has some interesting spells in it.

VGimlet  09 Feb 2002
I've had only one deck until about three months ago, when I decided I wanted to start collecting.

The original (from 1972) Aquarian Tarot +++++

My top ten on the wants list (there are too many to list here!)
1. Chris Paradis Rock Tarot (yeah, I know, good luck)

4. Renaissance (Williams)
5. Art Nouveau (Castelli)
6. Art Nouveau (Meyrs)
7. Thoth
8. Faries Oracle
9. Robin Wood
10. Cosmic
And this is only the beginning...at least tarot cards are small....

jade  09 Feb 2002
let's see.what i have *jade rummaging thru her tarot bag.....*

ah, voyager....my absolute favorite deck! deeper, clearer and more accurate than any other deck i've ever used.
motherpeace (sorry tarotbear) another one of my favs - great for woman and gay men (IMO)
soulcards I & II - i LOVE these cards - they speak your soul
oh cards speak the unspeakable
medicine woman tarot - these are sooooo beautiful and amazing to read with. extremely deep! i love these almost as much as my soulcards and voyager......almost!
medicine cards they speak for themselves (literally) LOL
witches' runes really wonderfully deep and points out your lessons well. nigel jackson is very talented as is silver ravenwolf.
sacred circle seldom use them, not my fav.
stick figure tarot great for a laugh and surprisingly deep.
legend: the arthurian tarot i don't use these ones either.
gendron don't like these at all. :(

that's all i can think of right now.

wish list......hmmmm......i don't have any other than the wild spirit tarot which i'm getting as soon as it comes out in april.

:)
jade

jade  09 Feb 2002
oh and morgan greer great for beginners and teaching!

i know there's more around here........hmmmm where are they.......:( *jade leaves the room rummaging for her other decks*

Bings  10 Feb 2002
When this post was first started I was too much of a beginner to even HAVE a wish list. Now... two weeks later... I have one. LOL

I have;
Sacred Circle (personally I love it)
Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg (passed down to me from my sister... I just can't bond with it)

I want;
Haindle Tarot (I crave this deck. It calls to me.)

I have ordered;
Universal Waite
Legend: The Arthurian Tarot

Dianne

jade  10 Feb 2002
why did you order the other two if the haindle spoke to you?

in light,
jade

Bings  10 Feb 2002
LOL Jade, good question!!!

When I ordered the Universal Waite, one deck was all I could afford. Just that one deck! And I wanted that one deck to be something my 10 year old daughter and I could learn together.

Then my mother gave me a little something as a way of saying "Thank you" for helping her with her housework over the past year. And she made me promise her I would spend the money on myself and not on my children. Soooo..... I ordered the Legend: Arthurian deck. Which I do love.

I haven't ordered the Haindl deck yet because I have been in denial. The artwork is not what I thought I would be so drawn to. I have finally admitted that I do need this deck. It calls to me too strongly to ignore. So I am going to order it... as soon as I figure out how to justify the expence to my husband... it is money I'm supposed to spend on myself... but I know my husband would rather see me buy clothes... maybe if I buy myself this one more deck and then buy HIM some clothes with the rest of the money.... LOL :-)

I will have that deck!

Dianne

jade  11 Feb 2002
pamper yourself! if you don't no one else will.....and she did say the money was to be spent on you and if decks make you happy then get them, if clothes make you happy then get clothes! but i think you want the deck more!!! :)

in light,
:)

divinerguy  22 Feb 2002
Dear Hush,

The Rider-Waite was my foirst deck, and I frequently find myself returning to it because of its universal qualities. Many readers never use anything else.

The important thing is that you're reading tarot and that you're here with us.

Spiral (primary deck)
Hanson Roberts (comfort deck)
Diamond ( received as a present :) )

I don't really have a wish list :)

magdalene  24 Feb 2002
I have dozens of decks, but I like to use Cosmic Tarot by Norbert Losche, and a Rider Waite deck.

I also like to use Mythic Tarot, except that the quality of the deck is inferior and it doesn't hold up well.

magdalene

Zac,
does it suck more than being 46 and broke?

. ;P good point Greenman!
I can't seem to give it up either , and the book that comes with the set has some interesting spells in it.

lol. Okay, so I'm a whiny spoiled teenager. I'm really cute, I think that makes up for it. :P

Razz  03 Mar 2002
Hi everyone! Oh I just bought two new decks. Why is it that you can plan on finding you are looking for, and then another. I love the artwork on the decks. I think that intrigues me the most sometimes!

Anyway, I just bought Whimisical and The Fairy Tarot.

I already had these:

The Old English Tarot
Thot
Old Marseille (which was a gift)
Symbolon
The Rohrig
The Medieval Scapini Tarot
Egyptian Tarot
Celtic Tarot
The Minchiate Tarot
Elemental Tarot
The Halloween Tarot
Tea Leaf Fortune (which isn't exactly tarot)
Universal Tarot

I look for something interesting with each deck. Coz I know I would like any of them out there. LOL

I have the a few decks, but my favorite is the Celtic Dragon and Motherpeace. They are both so different, but they are both so enlightening and beautiful.
Pollux: The Celtic Dragon is my favorite, you won't be disappointed! The art work is stunning. Definitely a keeper!

Kellinator  04 Mar 2002
What a great topic! I've really been enjoying reading everyone's lists.

I've realized I have far fewer decks than most of the people posting -- but still, I want a lot!

Decks I have:

Faery Wicca Tarot -- this was my first deck, but it shouldn't have been. The art is beautiful, but times the author doesn't seem to know what she's talking about, IMHO. I'm thinking about trading this one -- email me if you want it and have something I want.

Rohrig Tarot -- I adore this tarot except for two things: the large cards are hard to shuffle and there are all these disembodied breasts floating around! Still, I think this one is great, especially for intuitive readings.

Art Nouveau Tarot (Matt Myers) -- I just bought this one and haven't had time to play with it much yet, but the review here is right on the money. Gorgeous!

Healing with the Angels and Healing with the Fairies Oracle cards -- for me, these decks are so accurate that their author, Doreen Virtue, could do a "Healing with Clumps of Dirt" deck and I'd probably buy it.

Albano-Waite Tarot -- I've got this one somewhere (it was a hand-me-down), but I can't find it. Last weekend I traded my other two hand-me-downs, the Swiss deck and the Spanish deck -- they just didn't do anything for me.

My wish list (in order of preference):

Celtic Tarot (De Burgh) -- I wish I could find a sample deck of these, but it looks like I'll just have to bite the bullet and get them!

Sacred Circle Tarot -- I like these better every time I look at them.

Gendron Tarot -- There's just so much going on in these.

Shakespearean Tarot -- I'm an English major! :)

Anyone has any idea whether Shakespearean Tarot has a book on it?
It certainly sound interesting.
I'm also interested in Old English Tarot.
How is it like? Is it difficult to read with?

silvereye  04 Mar 2002
And does Wheel of Change have an accompanying book?

Most definitely... 383 pages long! The book has excellent insights and explorations of the cards. The artwork is detailed and fresh, and the cards are large (5" x 3") and well-produced. Overall the Wheel of Change Tarot is a really nice package.

Celtic Lady  13 Mar 2002
I have the alchemical tarot and it's my only deck. NOT a great choice for a beginner..... (it's only taken me 7 years of struggling with them to come to that conclusion) BUT!!!!!!! I have ordered a new set. It didn't cry out to me so much as SCREAMED out! It's the Celtic Tarot by De Burgh and when I saw the Moon card it just seemed to be exactly how that card should look. I've ordered from Amazon and I know they're going to arrive tomorrow. Anyone remember that Christmas Eve feeling from when they were young?

I want to get Whimsical and Dragon. But I just need a little more money.

I haven't really found any others that "speak" to me like those do.

The Fey deck screamed at me. It's extremly hard to find in my area so I ended up getting it off amazon. Since I knew I just had to have it.

Molly  11 Jul 2003
Okay, decks I currently have... which for some anal-compulsive reason I can't explain, I felt the need to alphabetize, even though I actually at first wrote "in no particular order" ..... and I am incapable of rating them, because of my Libra personality, but I will give them each a mini-review...

* The Blue Rose by Gibby (this can be found at www.tarotpassages.com for the uninitiated... I thought this would be "the one" but alas, as many others have experienced, the quest for "the one" is not so quickly filled... it is lovely, yes, but a book would be so very helpful, and it does not appear to be forthcoming anytime soon.
* Diamond Tarot (AAAAh. I love the RWS symbolism/interpretations... just not the coloring. This is the second best re-rendering I have seen... (second only to Herzer's Illuminated)
* Dante Tarot (lovely art, not much for reading with, on my part)
* Golden Tarot of the Tsar (just beautiful, rich deck. Love the heritage, the info on the saints is not enough though... wish there was a book vs LWB)
* Light and Shadow Tarot (one of my loves… just an amazing deck)
* Motherpeace Round Large (and the book by Vicki Noble, which really helps in understanding and loving the deck… I have heard that the book was "too feminist" but I am not a "feminist" and have learned a lot and have enjoyed it greatly… it is a woman’s deck though… got very supportive readings when I was pregnant, for example)
* Tarot of the Origins (an amazing stillness seems to envelope me when I look at the pictures; they are so invocative)
* Phantasmagoric Theatre (just so quircky and fun, I love this deck)
* Portal Tarot (Majors only) (Really the only deck I can successfully "enter" meditatively)
* Quest (I love the genderless people and the beauty of the world.. but it strikes me like glass sometimes, and I have to be careful of the fragility... if that makes any sense)
* The Shining Tribe Tarot (my absolute favorite tarot author, and an amazing deck with rich insight, really more people should give it a chance, the artwork is perfect for the intent and message it has)
* Songs for the Journey Home (I really didn't "bond" with this deck as much as I thought I would; the images are too busy sometimes and the book is too hard to get into for me... I have a different political worldview than the authors, perhaps, and maybe that gets in the way too much. Like, even though I may not agree with everything in the Motherpeace book, I thought it was interesting reading... and I just don't find this book interesting, and the deck is hard to read without studying the book)
* Victoria Regina (just amazing to look at - perfect for RWS lovers to read with - the love that went into the creation of the deck is so tangible)
* World Spirit (I haven’t used this deck much yet, but I love the mix of the people - the love for all kinds, not just pretty people)
* Universe Cards (oracle) Amazing photography.

*********************
Now I am on a quest (hee) to have the most excellent deck collection there is (for me, of course *G*).. that is, if it doesn't speak to me, trade it... keep only those I love. So, really, I would give high ratings to all the above decks... although, if, say I was being threatened with torture and had to pick only two I could keep, Oddly enough, I think they would be my two B&W decks, Light and Shadow and VR. And I would really really beg for my Diamond. Also, I try to look for decks that are very visually stimulating, as I like to use my decks for creative writing.

**********************
On to my wish list:

Tarot: Visconti Gold (I want a "classic" deck) and/or Renaissance Tarot by Williams (undecided if I want both or one or the other more), Buckland Romani (I don't know if I will be able to read with it, but the illustrations look so inspiring), Karma deck (recently discovered), Illuminated by Herzer, Rock and Roll tarot, Eternal Dream

Oracles: The Fairy Ring, Faeries’ Oracle, Animal Spirits Knowledge Cards by Boulet

Not yet published: MAAT tarot, Mary-El, Tarot of the Black Flamingo, Golden Tarot

**********************

Sorry this was such a long post. To all those who actually read this far, thank you!

Sayonaran  11 Jul 2003
Decks I own:
Presently, Medicine Cards. My first deck came from a Jennifer Sands, talking psychic board game (ya, laugh if you want), but they were amazingly to the point and correct every time I used them. (To think I found them in some flea market for 3 dollars!)

Wish List:
Ukyioe (?) --
Correct me if I've misspelled the name. All I know that it's an Asian version of Rider Waite and a good friend of my let me use it. I thought it was nice.

Original Rider Waite & Unerviseral Rider Waite --
... I know most folks start on this deck, but I just want to get my hands on either one (hopefully both) so I can study them. I have a computerized version of this on the PC, but it craps out every now and then, forcing me to re-install the programme.

Astrological (?) --
I can't remember the actual name of this either, but it has more of an astrology bent to it than the usual deck. I'm trying to find it to correspond with my Astrology/Numerology programme that I use often to draw up reports for others.

Thoth --
Another good friend of mine uses this to the death. I've used it a few times, but I could only get straight answers, like a flat no or flat yes, with no reason why. Have to be very logical in sense, well when I use it anyway.

Spirit --
Used this deck a few times from yet another friend. This is similar to Thoth, but it's more layered in the creative aspect of things. It makes you think and wonder (since the answers are beating themselves around the bush). I hated it for doing that, but it made me dwell on what the world it's trying to say. Can't go that far from cryptic, eh?

That's all I have on my wish list. I doubt there'll be any more coming soon. I really want my hands on that Asian deck, that is, if it stops being sold out all the time at my favorite bookstore!
