Has anyone tried the Enochian tarot??

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 27 Feb 2002, and now archived in the Forum Library.

I have been looking at this deck on the Llewellyn site, and for some reason it intrigues me. Has anyone seen it? or better yet used it? I would appreciate any insights.

This is an old thread I dragged up from February... but I have been looking into this deck too? Anyone use have or use it? I quite like the style of illustrations but am not sure if I could get used to all the changes... So... Anyone??? :P

I dont know about the deck, but Ive looked at the Enochian system of magic awhile ago. Recently a man I truly respect in the magick community, Ambrose Hawk, has written that he believes that the so called Enochian angles were actually demons and gives good reasons to support this, so I no longer want anything to do with anything Enochian. If anyone is interested I'll ask him if I can post his thoughts here. Also look for his book on scrying at amazon hehe

i got the enochian in a trade not too long ago. something about the deck turns me off but i'm certain what. usually when i get a new deck, i want to see every card but i only look at a few cards at a time w/ this one. i still haven't looked at all of them. i don't consider it a true tarot b/c i can't differentiate b/t major and minor arcana. each card is numbered and named. i'm reminded of the templar deck but the templar is lighter than this. i like the art and color of the templar more plus it's a true tarot. if any of you seriously want to try it, we could discuss a trade. ;) for some reason i feel a tad uneasy w/ it. in the time period i got it i also got the tarot de paris. i've at paris over and over but i can't get thru enochian even once. i think i can safely say this deck doesn't speak to me at all.

I went ahead and bought the deck after I posted that back in February. I disliked the deck intensely. In fact I posted about it on that thread about decks you hated. It is supposed to put you into direct contact with the angels. I do not see how it could do that. Traded the deck to ravenswing, and he hasn't commented back to me. I got Tarot of the Old Path for it, a considerable improvement in my opinion.
The cards are ugly, and like truthsayer, I do not even think that I ever succeeded in looking through the entire deck.

One deck *scratched* off the wish list! Yuck, I won't be going near it... :P

I owned the Enochian deck for a long time but gave it away. I don't recommend it as a good reading deck- much better for study or collecting.

-------
My comments on Enochian, angels, demons et all worth more or less .02

In Western magical history Angelic-labled forces have been used to kill and maim innocent people; demonic-labed forces have been used to build temples and heal the sick. Its the -intent- that is important. Spiritual energies are a lot like hammers and guns... they can only be as helpful or harmful as the person wielding them.

Further, I personally don't think Enochian is diabolical or malific just bloody difficult to pronounce and think in- and this is based on my personal research and reflection. :) I seriously recommend more research beyond one occult teacher's opinion or arguments, particularly someone as controversial as Ambrose Hawk.

((Controversial doesn't mean wrong, however, and I will definately read his Enochian articles with an open mind)).

But to quote Ambrose Hawk on Ambrose Hawk and his various theories "In many circles, I'm infamous for holding obtuse and contrary opinions that differ from those of my companions. In the following essay, I present just such a pebble for my friends' shoes. Be aware that what follows is totally a personal opinion, however deeply researched or confirmed by experiment it may be."

for a 'brief' overview, check regaurdie's the golden dawn.

the enochian system is rather complex and convoluted. one of crowley's studies... it seems rather dark to me. even the angels seem a little too heavy...

i passed the deck along.

Thanks for posting ravenswing. I hope the deck eventually winds up with someone who can work with its particular energies.

i got this one in a trade today and i think i may like it.
perhaps i will even use it to read with or at least try. the images are expressive and i can see how this deck could be good to study alongside Thoth and Golden Dawn.

perhaps i like it also because the artist is the same as who did the new orleans voodoo deck and i have wanted that one for years.

whatever i will think of it later on - it is an interesting deck at least.

will do a new deck spread later on and post it on the forum!

jema,
I traded truthsayer for her's a couple of weeks ago. I'm with you! I like it!! :)
It is very strange and I can see why it would throw some people off. It is quite dark, but it's compelling as well.
I even bought the OOP Enochian Tarot book through Amazon.com - haven't got to read it yet. But I like the cards and am glad to hear someone else does too!! LOL

HOLMES  12 Feb 2003
at first i looked at it ( i coudlnt' concieve at why i jumped at the chance to get it ehh) and though what strange artwork,,yet compelling so i wiated a day before reading the book.

i wouldn't say it is a rsw clone that is for sure ehhe.

yet as i read it more i found that a differnt system started to develop in my mind.. one that i am trying to understand.

up into now i never wanted to study ritual magic,, or enochian magic. yet now i feel compelled to read and study the books yet i only got the one book that fuana so quietly traded..

(on a strange thought ,, would be funny if my enochian tarot is the same one that marion brought at the beginning,, then went to raven,, then to fuana then to me wouldn't it ?) eheh.

so i got nothing really in depth to say cept now the deck has interested me into as i write this checking out enochain sites on the internet.

Hi Holmes,

The trumps in the Schuelers' Enochian tarot are all based on Aleister Crowley's descriptions of the thirty Enochian Aethyrs in The Vision and the Voice, which is here:

http://www.hermetic.com/crowley/l418/418.html

I'm not quite sure where their images for the angels depicted in the smalls cards come from. To my knowledge, there's no definitive description of the Enochian angels in any tradition, and Ben Rowe suggests that no definitive description is possible.

I'd guess they're the Schuelers' best guess based on elemental/planetary attributions and maybe their own individual experience.

Ben Rowe didn't think much of the Schuelers' work. But then again, Sallie Ann Glassman's artwork for the deck is really hauntingly beautiful.

Good luck!

I think Llewellyn is about to release another enochian deck, by the ciceros. Check this out: http://www.llewellynjournal.com/article.php3?id=295
seems more oriented toward meditative practicing and scrying, as the name suggests.

i did do a daily card drawing with the nochian - but i don't got the book and never read about enochian magick so i must confess to being really confused and ignorant.
i still like the deck, it feels like i want to get to know it - but i need the book and read up on the whole system before even trying.
so thanks for the links!

that llewellyn deck by ciceros sounds interesting too. too bad they don't show ANY images. grrrr. i wanna see it
*curious*

Sorry to bring up a dead thread, but does anyone know how the enochian tarot is structured? Is there a purpose of lesser angels, seniors, krubechs, and the other names? Is that a level they refer to because i dont see a real hierarchy.
