Cuz the idea of RW clone is very broad, I have decided to help Pollux out, with a new poll: Which RW inspired deck is your fave? Eg- Morgan Greer, Hanson Roberts, Robin Wood, etc?

I already took my vote, that couldn't be but what I have chosen...
But I have a doubt: aren't more or less ALL of the Decks around (apart some exception like Thoth and Bosch, for example) Rider-Waite inspired?
BOOO!!!!!!! This is quite an annoying matter...
However, this one makes more sense than mine:
so we have a poll for both "clones" and "inspired"!!! :D
Thank you, Little Great Spirit! :*

Pollux: I think that there are quite a few 'types' of deck aound. Here's what I can think of so far:
-RW Clones (The ones which don't change the pictures on the ards at all.)
- RW inspired (The ones that use virtually the same system, images, meanings as RW, but with changes depending on the artist's viewpoint)
- IJJ Swiss types: Those that are virtually the same, and use pip minors, based on pre-Golden Dawn/RW/Crowley traditions.
- Thoth-based: Those that use the same system and meanings as Good Old Beastie Boy
Can anyone else think of any others? I suppose there are those decks that, although based on the RW tradition, tend to steer well away from it, such as the Pythagorean Tarot, DOM, etc.... These decks are usually very themed though, so maybe they could be classed as the 'very Themed Decks'....

I guess different people classify decks in different ways. The way I tend to is by the following:
- early painted un-numbered decks
(Visconti-Sforza kind)
- Marseilles type decks
- derivatives from Marseilles
(1jj, Schaffhouse/Classic &c)
- 'gaming' decks
(hunting scenes, etc... nothing obviously esoteric)
- 'Egyptian' type decks
(and there are a number around)
- Wirth decks and derivatives
- Golden Dawn derivatives
(I include here the Crowley/Harris deck, the GD deck, the Tree of Life deck, & others, even though superficially they appear extremely different. I also include here the Colman-Smith/Waite deck, even though I relist it below simply because of its influence.... in my opinion, it too belongs here)
- Colman-Smith/Waite decks
- Derivatives of these
- Circular decks
(usually with a strong feminist orientation)
- Wiccan/Pagan decks
(T. of the Old Path, &c.)
- 'reproduction'
(Blake, &c) and 'genuine' (Dali &c) art decks
- Theme decks
(Arthurian &c)
- other Tarot decks
- Tarot 'inspired' decks
(ateilla & its derivatives and others)

JMD: What a definitive list that is! Wow! ne qustion though: Circular decks, wouldn't they be classed as 'themed decks' along with Arthurian, etc?

There are two reasons why I personally place the circular decks in a category of their own (and if they become more prevalent, I'll have to separate various classes of circular decks).
The first is that, in my opinion, the Motherpeace deck, irrespective of its imagery, was bold enough to introduce a new aspect to the Tarot: significantly modify the frame from which we view the image. For me, this warrants an acknowledgement far superior than its otherwise classification under one of the other headings.
The second reason is that the other circular decks around appear to also have been influenced by this deck... whether Themed or Wiccan/pagan.
I should add that my 'other' is because I have not had the need to generally classify other decks, but, to be truly fair, other criteria may be more important to someone else.
For example, if the above list forms the column headings of a large chart, the row headings may indicate the medium used. Only as an example (which I have only rarely used) may include:
Media:
- individually painted or drawn
- Woodblocks or metal-engraving
- collage
- photographic
- computer generated
- combination of above
- other
(this is a very useful category which really means 'I can't think of anything else at this stage')

Just for the fun of the deck-match concept here are some other ideas for your use Pollock:
1) art decks
2) erotic decks
3) Celtic themed decks
4) Animal themed decks
5) multicultural decks
6) Non-traditional decks (shapeshifter, osho-zen)
7) reading decks
8) classical decks
9) Whimsical decks
the options for creating deck deathmatches are endless ~giggles~. Just keep it fun and simple. If you need us to help with deck suggestions, just let us know the topic for the week and we can all suggest decks for you to include in the poll.
Thanks for your initiative.
