kazanlar

Kazanlar is my newest deck. i ordered it months ago and got a notice telling my it could not be delivered but that they would send it as soon as they can and they gave a date for june or so. and i forgot all about it. then today - after a week of no mail at all - this shows up at my doorstep.
the kazanlar has a very oriental feel to it - it reminds me of thousand and one night, turkish delight, icons and the far east. it is full of symbols like yin/yang, sphinxes, wings, pyramids, eyes, animals and lots of writing in arabic and hebrew. The booklet is 143 pages long and shockfull of information and stories and interpretations for the cards.

so let's take a look at 9 of wands in the kazanlar deck:
what i see:
to the left is a figure that looks like a demon/angel with a big grin on his face, making some movements with his arms, creating spirals in the air over a person laying down. the person on the ground is clearly dead but his spirit is rising up. to the right we see a woman, bending her head down in grief. all around them are a thousand flames/yellow leafs. another symbol shown is a lotus-flower.

now the booklets tells us about how the goddess of prayer came down to earth, married a king and gave birth to a daughter: Savitri. when times comes for her to marry it is revealed that the man she likes the most is doomed to die within a year due to a sickness. Savitri still marries this man and takes a vow not to move, eat, drink or sleep for three days if just the God of Death, Yama, will leave her husband be and let him live. she argues long and hard with the God of Death before he finally gives way and lets the man return to life.

i think this story also shows how important it is that we fight for what we desire and that we don't simply give up even when things seem to go against us. Savitri fought for her husbands life and won.

(from todays entry in my tarot-journal)

I recently ordered this deck and really look forward to looking through it. I understand that it has some varied Qabalistic views (different than the GD) which was the main reason I ordered it. Overall how do you like the deck?

jema  28 Mar 2002
i only had it for a day so far:-)
but i love the rich images. and the booklet with the little stories, it's like a storybook in mini-format.

i haven't read all the kabbala stuff yet, i am not well versed in the kabbala, but since i also just now got pollacks complete tarot i might sit down and make an effort to really learn it better.

the deck is smooth to handle, the cards long and narrow which makes for easy shuffling.

If you are interested in the Qabalah I would highly recommend "Qabalistic Tarot" by Robert Wang ... the Qabalah is one of the areas that I am very very interested in. If you ever want a list of sources I have more I can recommend :)

Where are you all ordering this deck from? I've looked around and can't find it available anywhere.

Hi Lee, I ordered the deck from AGMuller web site. Faunabay and I placed an order of 4 decks together to save on shipping costs (which by the way was the same cost as if she had ordered 2 on her own). In the future she and I plan to do this again, if you would like we can let you know and you can order with us :) ... if not, now you know where to find it :)

jema  28 Mar 2002
hi lee,
i ordered it from my swedish occult bookshop but since it is a AGM Müller deck you should be able to buy it from their website. http://www.tarotworld.com/
i know they can be a bit slow to communicate with though.
since i don't own a creditcard i am depending on my favorite bokshop to take in all the decks i want and they can for the most part - but a few decks are just impossible to get hold of.

jewel,
the only kabbala i read so far is from the kliegmans book - tarot and the tree of life, which deals only with the minor arcanas. what i liked about her book is how easy it was to understand, she writes in a language i can understand, although i have to say i disagree with the way she views the suit of wands.
do you have any good on-line links for quabala? (i never could decide how to spell that word)

Jewel  28 Mar 2002
Jema, I have her book, but have not read it yet ... will probably be pulling it out as I study the Thoth deck. One of the books I enjoyed the most, and it only had a "section" on Qabalah is called "The Truth About Tarot" by Gerald Suster. I can get you the ISBN and publisher if you are interested. It also has numerology, astrology, etc. I loved all but the last 5 pages of the book when he started talking about Wicca and I did not care for what he had to say *LOL*. The Robert Wang book is really like a text book and is very academic, but the Qabalah is sooooooo complex and deep. I will rustle through my books and give you a list. As for web-sites, I have not explored them but I am sure others here in the forum will provide you with some great links.

I got my Kazanlar today... :)

I had looked it up on the internet several times, put it on my wish list, took it off again, put it back on... then finally decided I wasn't going to buy it. But then last week, when I was at my reikimaster's for my reiki course, she put it into my hands saying "I think you'll like this deck". So then of course I had to buy it... ;)

I've only looked through it a few times now, but I really like the images. The LWB looks good too, it contains a lot of background information. There are also some interesting spreads in it.
Now I just need to find the time to study it thoroughly... ;)

hi tarotlady!
the kazanlar cards are very busy, lots of things to study in them which makes the deck best with shorter spreads and excellent for just one card readings.
i love the storytelling aspect of it and i do like the artwork - it speaks to me. the LWB is absolutely one of the best i have seen and very good in that it is special made for the deck and treats each card and the symbols we see there and don't just give us generic meanings.
i still haven't worked all that much with it. hard to find time for it - but i think i will use it for daily august-cards.

jema asked for 'good on-line links for Kabbala'.

One site which is more than reasonable, but does not discuss Tarot, is here. The link is to a page which discusses the Tree of Life for ease of reference.

Within Aeclectic, there are, of course, the Qabalah threads in the Study Groups section, which you, and everyone else, is welcome to join.

Does anyone know what the two extra cards in the deck represent? I'm referring to the two unnumbered and untitled cards that represent a man and a woman.
I can't find anything about them in the LWB; I have only leafed through it though, so I might have missed it.

The man on the card looks oriental, whereas the woman looks European. So I was wondering whether these represented Emil Kazanlar's parents; he says in the LWB that his father was Turkish/Persian and that his mother was Hungarian.

catlin  22 Jul 2002
I also got the Kazanlar in my collection although some cards are a bit too Christian for my taste but it is colourful and maybe I'll use it for readings for ppl with Oriental background.

Marion  22 Jul 2002
I just looked all the way through the AGMuller site and could not find the Kazanlar deck. Could someone give me a specific url? I would really like to see it, the discussion is intriguing.

jema  22 Jul 2002
Marion,
you can find some scans and a good review of the deck here:
http://www.spiritone.com/~filipas/Masquerade/Reviews/kazanlar.html

i like it because it is so much of a story-book. filled with myths and tales.
while it does have some christian elements as Catlin wrote it also have islamic and hindu symbols. the tarot is a creation of a christian society and therefore there will be a christian element in most decks. since i am not christian i just view the biblical myths as any other myths:)

i do think that the two extra cards are there just as significator cards. one male and one female. i could be wrong though but i haven't located anything that says they are supposed to be in the deck when you do a reading. at least i don't use them for anything else then bookmarks:)

I wasn't really planning on using them either, I was just curious as to their intended meaning. ;)

I love all the references to 1001 nights! It's interesting to see that the texts in English, German and French all refer to the card (e.g. Five of Wands etc.), whereas the Hungarian text uses names. I don't have the deck with me at the moment, so I can't look them up, but there are cards called Sindbad, Ali Baba and Aladdin. And in the swords suit, the names of the Egyptian god portrayed on the card is used.

Thanks jema!

Thanks for posting the link, Jema from me too. What lush cards... WOW!
