Legend: The Arthurian Tarot

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 23 Mar 2002, and now archived in the Forum Library.

silvereye  23 Mar 2002
The deck and book set arrived yesterday.
I must say the book is extremely well written and informative! I haven't layed my hands on to do a reading yet, because I 'm not familiar with Arthurian stories that i have to read through the book first.
does anyone here own this set as well?

truthsayer  24 Mar 2002
silvereye, the LAT is my favorite theme deck. i love the arthurian legends anyhow but the lovely watercolor paintings on the cards just give me all kinds of insights. i love nimue as the high priestess. i have read that the arthurian tarot by caitlin matthews is better. i'm only recently been able to trace it down to amazon and ordered it. i love matthews work but i find it hard to believe that it could possibly replace LAT from being first in my heart. it's one of the few impulse tarot buys of love at first sight that has stayed that way. it's very intuitive/empathic to read so i only use it as my personal deck. it's hard for me to say how much you'll need to know about arthur to understand the deck. i think the characters in the cards relate enough info that you may be able to read it w/ practice w/o the book. but read the book! it's well researched and i've learned things in it that i didn't know from the legends. give this deck a chance. i think it's wonderful!!!!!!!

silvereye  24 Mar 2002
Actually I've been struggling to decide which Arthurian Tarot I should buy.
The other deck is appealing as well but I think the cards are difficult to read without the traditional titles. There are pictures without characters so I think I will find trouble relating them to the stories.

Maan  24 Mar 2002
I own this set too and i love it. I had to have it after reading " The mists of avalon" The pictures capture the feeling of the story perfectly.
And it also remind me of a series on television when i was little. Robin Hood with music from Clanned. ( me and my brother use to play Robin and Marian in the backyard)

Enjoy!

jade  24 Mar 2002
i like using this deck specifically for relationship type of questions.

although, i don't use it alot at this point, i do like it.

in light,
jade :)

Rhiannon  24 Mar 2002
Love this deck! It is one of my four remaining decks (got rid of 2 I no longer needed or liked) and I will never trade it.

I find it very easy to work with. I did not buy the deck & book set, but the LWB that came with the deck gives me enuff info. to go on. I've found that only 3 or 4 of the cards in this deck have different LWB meanings than the traditional Rider Waite, so it doesn't put me off as much as some others (won't name them in case they are a fave of someone else) do.

The scans on any of the websites I've seen just do not do the artwork justice. I was attracted to this deck when I saw the scans but thought they were very gray. While there is gray in the deck there is also alot of subtle color and they are not nearly as drab or dreary as they appear on a computer screen. The cards are not overly busy or hard on your eyes, the colors are soft and soothing.

I hope you enjoy your new deck!

Rhiannon :)

silvereye  25 Mar 2002
Oh, just curious, which cards do you think that their meanings deviate from the Rider Waite cards?

Jewel  25 Mar 2002
This is a great deck! For those of you interested in an indepth look at it, Melvis is using this deck in the "78 Degrees of Wisdom" study group in the Study Group forum ... it has been real interesting to read, highly recommend you read the threads on this. I has really added to my understanding of the deck.

Rhiannon  25 Mar 2002
silvereye,

the one that comes to mind right away is the 7 of Swords. In traditional Rider Waite it's "the theif" card and in Arthurian it's more like a "potential" card. Does that make sense?

I'd have to go get my deck and look at it to see which others I think are different. Too tired right now, it's almost 11pm now. Sleeeeppppyyyy.... but I will remember to do that for you and post it here.

Rhiannon :)

silvereye  25 Mar 2002
Jewel,
Thanks for your advice, I'd go and have a look at that thread.
Rhiannon,
Thanks for your message.
Which card do you like most in LAT?

Jewel  26 Mar 2002
silvereye you should come and join us in the 78 Degrees of Wisdom study group that way you and Melvis could compare notes on the deck like Kaz and I are doing on the Templar ... just a suggestion ... it does not matter if you do not have the book, we explain the chapters in a preface and then create exercises that capture the concepts ... real neat study group. The group is open to all, we are on Chapt. 3, but we always reply when we get new members on the older threads.

All Is One  30 Mar 2002
It is so cool to finally have a place to share my deepest passionate subject
and to know that you who read this are not the "oh yeah, great, whatever, send me a photo" brain dead people I have tried to talk to on line. The A. T. deck, as Rhiannon (check out the card for RHIANNON!! BTW, wish I had the deck over here- I'm living in two places; my apt. w/12 birds, and the house of my beloved, w/the computer) said, is so incredibly subtle in colouring, and it is so evocative in it's human figures, as well as alot of truly imaginative, but never odd or off-key, symbolism, BUT. . .

***Here's my own (just a wierd Scorpio problem, perhaps) trouble with it:

1. It does not work well for readings if the q. is not acquainted w/tarot in intimate detail ( as is usually the case)

2. It is so firmly rooted in the 10 crds of each element's "story" that it does not BEND itself to the other influences trying to work through the cards to the realm of the layout (whichever realm you may be in as you do a layout)

3. It is so gorgeous and detailed I get caught up in actual daydreams and fantastickal voyages just looking through the deck.

Enough rambling- I love this deck so much, and I never read w/it.

I also believe that one day I might devote myself to it ( I'm a water sign, and scorpio, therefore afflicted w/ fickleness and willful discord)
but I also have decks like The Ancestral Tarot, that I go over card by card for hours and never "read" with. . . the paintings are almost - I don't know.

Some decks work for people and some don't, and I have yet to hear anyone on this site mention my favourite deck (it was for my first 5 years reading) which is The Merlin Tarot. At first I hated that the minors were not fully illustrated, but it has always been the best and truest reading deck for me (my sister gave it to me as a gift, USED from a bkstore, and my connection to her may explain this )... the "solar ray " spread also works w/certain decks, and is excellent w/hand drawn pices of paper (I try) but the reason I mention the Merlin is that it is oddly the Anti-Arthurian Tarot.

Totally oppossing decks??

Any thoughts on this? Am I rambling and ranting into the void, again? I think there is such purpose in this site: "there are no accidents, there is no such thing as coincidence" (bad paraphrase of Jung)

Alison

***solar ray spread: anyone tried this w/ TAT ? I said Merlin deck the "anti-Arthurian tarot deck" for a reason: anybody care to jump in ? It may not be in print- I'm curious now.

Rhiannon  30 Mar 2002
My fave card from this deck is Morgan LeFay as the Moon. How very appropriate!

Rhiannon :)

All Is One  31 Mar 2002
Three nites ago I pulled the Morgan Le Fay card from my Ancestral Tarot deck as a flip thru fun/fantasy thing (yes, I AM four years old. . .and I will stay there til I get over the thrill)

It is the Princess of cups in that deck. . .I stuck it in my big mirror, the cheap one where the cards slide in so well and never ruff their edges. . .

all I was struck by, at the moment was- I do not see how she got to M. Le Bad A** (who I love) as the P of CUPS! (can't she be a SWORD??)

But the painting is so cool. She has either a tattoo of a crescent moon, or a drawing, on her forehead and she is alone, gathering herbs under the moon, but the concentration on her face is so powerful.

Rhiannon: I sure wish I had my stuff all together in one location... I could go fingd the M le Fay card in the AT.

:)

silvereye  31 Mar 2002
I think the deck has this dreamy feeling about it.
My favourite card is Temperance.

napaisti  02 Apr 2002
I just got this deck :D !!!

I was in a little metaphysical shop to buy a book I needed (one of those "get this book NOW" feelings, and had to take the time to look around.

When I walked into the room with the tarot decks my eye went immediately to L:AT, but I spent some time looking at the other decks they had, flipping thru some display decks, etc. before giving in to temptation.

Did my first reading with it (that I always do with new decks) to find out how we're going to work together. The first card I drew -- The Moon! Now, you need to understand first I am a Pisces and second I've been drawn to Morgan since I was young (before Mists of Avalon). If I wasn't in love with this deck before, I certainly am now.

**doing the happy, new-deck dance**

napaisti

silvereye  02 Apr 2002
I'm a Piscean as well.
How about other people

All Is One  02 Apr 2002
I'm a Scorpio, born on Halloween, at 7:51 pm, in the French Quarter (Touro Infirmary) in New Orleans.

This may not mean alot to others, but it has shaped my life in certain ways.

When other unusual factors are added in (not the place, now) I think it could mean whatever I choose it to mean...

Just like so many folk refuse to believe in astrology!

(Pisces and Cancer are so warm and wonderful next to us Scorpions- and how could that be? LOL)

Zhritza  03 Apr 2002
Not to get too off topic, but I have the sun and four planets in Libra. Perhaps this explains why I like Swords so much. I can't make a decision to save my life much of the time; "cut-and-dried" is something I aspire to!

Jewel  03 Apr 2002
Another piscean here :) ... I also love that deck nepaisti, it is breathtakingly beautiful! although I have not explored the deck in depth yet (but do have it) I hear the book is really really good. So many decks so little time ....

silvereye  03 Apr 2002
It appears to me that most people who are drawn to this deck are water signs people

All Is One  04 Apr 2002
I got the deck with the book and a beautiful heavy paper lay-out
sheet (which I looked at a lot but didn't use- maybe I'll try it again)

The Keeper of the Word is a great book; it stands alone as an
introduction to the Grail legend, and I think of any tarot gifts I've
ever received, this was sure
one of the best!
For anyone who loves the Grail legends or has the deck,
the book is, IMHO,
one of the best companion books to a deck that I've ever seen.

Rhiannon  06 Apr 2002
Well, sorry but I'm a Gemini - air sign. But one of my best friends is a Scorpio and she's loved this deck for a long time. When she saw mine she remarked on it so much I went out and bought her the deck/book set. She absolutely loves it. I think she shuffles every night!

Rhiannon :)

truthsayer  06 Apr 2002
you know, i do think the statistics are oddly balanced toward water sign folks enjoying this deck more than other signs. count me in as another! might make an interesting poll...

All Is One  09 Apr 2002
All of this discussion sent me rushing back to my apt to dig out the deck and the book, last friday. This site has done more to refresh and renew my love of tarot and tarot study than anything in years.

*runs around in three circles in center of the kitchen floor, holding Legend deck in left, Gendron deck in right hand, and sings a little song of gratitude*

Be aware ~holds back the giggle~ this is the first sign of collector symptoms. If you are not careful you will be having to join the Tarot-Holic group with Truthsayer, Faunabay and I. This month has been particularly rough on us, and it is not even the 15th! *LOL*. Don't say I did not warn you. ;)

I wish someone had warned ME before I discovered this forum. ...Not really... But I remember a time when 10 decks seemed like plenty! Well, that part of my life is over and done with, I guess... :D

I feel like something cherished has been renewed for me, too. Man, I love you guys! (sniff)

All Is One  10 Apr 2002
Oh Jewel; and Faunabay, and Truthsayer (my sister in other realms)-

If you all could only know how many times since the minute on March 15 when I literally stumbled in here... (is that the Ides of march..? I've been a lapsed English Major for so long that I no longer have access priviledges to that portion of my ego-brain-complex...thank god) that I've turned on the computer and saved myself through you- one and all.

I spent three years in AA and I did it for the companionship, as well as to re-gain my sense of humor. (my therapist also demanded it as a condition of "our work" because she was a firm member)

I don't know how to describe my relationship to the tarot except: if I had to give up my dream life, my religion (which boils down to tarot, basically) 0r food and water. . . I'd sure give aesceticism a good long try.

Oh, I forgot- heehee- I was treated for severe anorexia for years. .. well-so much for that pathetic analogy.

Forget my petty whining (it will be major someday, but for now, it's a gnat saying "don't worry, Alison -Be Happy")

TELL me, oh please- what is so bad about this month and why is it that I've been privately addicted (and so egotisically convinced I was one of the few, the proud... the LONELY) in my devotion to tarot and my poetry, while you all are warning me that - well???

I'm not alone any more.

Nothing could be worse than over 10- 15 years of books and tarot and running, when I believed (assumed) there was noone with whom I could EVER share this devout and most important part of my life.

Again- it has been an incredibly tense month for me also, and my S/O (hate that phrase- but " boyfriend " is demeaning) is NOT happy that I have found some of the lost members of my tribe on this site. Pouting, misunderstandings, and other nastinesses are thick here. :( {:P}

Love shall either conquer or figure out an alternative route...Right?
My true spiritual foundation was poured (duck- here comes another stinky analogy) so many years ago that no man can even jiggle it.

They can, however, distract me to the point where I become fairly dangerous.

*teehee,ho-ho-ho: I scare few, but I sure do crack myself up*

PS- can I join you three anyway? Are there any terrifying death-defying initiation rites?

I'm a serious twinky...I'll probably never pass.

Wishing you all the turn around to this "rough month" - Me, the babbler

lunalafey  10 Apr 2002
I love this deck and have used it for quite a while now. It replaced a deck that I 'retiered'. It was one of those things that happen to present itself at the right time.
I have always loved the world of Pendragon, Merlin, Camelot, and...Morgan Le Fay
I have also admired the Moon, for longer than I can remember..
When I got the deck and started going through them
I was tickled to see Morgan and the Moon together.
this combination...gave birth to..LunaLaFey...( I need a user name when I got my computer, then I found this site, and all you wonderful people)
Now as far as the AIR sign thing goes...I'm WAY EARTHY...capi; sun moon merc. virgo; acs jup ura plu.

all is one: i just noticed your request for a sponsor to tarot-holics--i don't mind being your sponsor but keep in mind i may be a bad influence on you. if you ask me to help you resist buying a deck, i'll probably prompt you to buy the deck!! at least that's the way it seems to work around here. we all seem to egg each other on! :p

~Giggles madly imagining Turthsayer as a bag lady peddling for decks~ Now you know why I'm laughing don't you? *ROFLMAO*. I will probably be sitting next to you, both of us with all of our current decks carefully placed in an old shopping cart basket all covered up with the only blanket we own just to make sure they are not ruined *LOL*.

All Is One ... welcome to the sisterhood of Tarot-Holics (males are welcome to this group, we will simply not call it a sisterhood if you join *LOL). I think that for initiation you should run out and buy the first deck that catches your eye ~giggles~. Being a Tarot-Holic is the best thing that has happened to me *LOL*. We love making fun of each other (in a good way), we even e-mail eachother when we buy decks or are thinking of it *LOL*. It really does have a domino effect :p

I also felt really alone and with no one to share my love for tarot with. I am making some terrific friends here, and learning so much. I am really glad you are here All Is One :) ... as Truthsayer said, you are not (and never were) alone. Welcome home sis.

Apologies.

Then it is too late by the time you get here- you are dust!

Prepare to cut all expenses (try not to get evicted)

in pursuit and purchase of as much Taro related stuff as you can find!

Congrats on admitting that you are powerless to resist temtation to buy trade or sell your soul for new decks....etc...

Only suggestion I have: any time you feel inspiration to spend wildly is flagging...PM me or Truthsayer or...you'll find us.

We will reccommend as many temptations as we ourselves have succumbed to!!!

which is what you are wondering about? correct?
not the one above that which is about addiction to the cards...
add to that picture, my post in this thread regarding Morgan and the Moon...

Marion  30 Aug 2002
Yes, I recognized the topic too (luna's romantic quest). Possibly not exactly directly related to the thread topic, except in a romantic questing kind of way, like the Legend:Arthurian Tarot, but fun nonetheless.

lunalafey  30 Aug 2002
OK, here is something to tie it together.
One of the reasons why I am faithful to my deck, the readings. I think sometimes the deck has a mind all it's own.
We have been together, one on one ever since October of 1998...just reciently have I gotten other decks.
using my Legend deck......
when I want to know something about someone, I will draw 3 or 4 cards.
Now this Knight, he is a Gemini. While shuffling, I thought now wouldn't it be funny if the :TLOVE card came up...because of it's association with Gemini. As I finish my shuffle and make the final cut, cards drop. I think there is only two, but no there's 3. And the card that looks me in the face when I turn them over...:TLOVE.....
like I said a mind of it's own...the cards jump like fish......

All Is One  30 Aug 2002
The card that comes up whenever I read for ...the one person I usually read for...is the lovers, 6, Gemini. He is a double Gem and a mirror twin (long explanation...)

and Luna's latest Knight.

I did not know the threads had to directly pertain
so strictly to topic...I am being bad AGAIN????

Oh well...nothing new there.

Hello everyone!! I was reading the 1st four pages of this thread when the words " water sign" came up. i guess silvereye was right in saying that most people drawn to LAT belong to the water sign. i am a scorpion. i saw the LAT deck at a bookstore and was instantly drawn to it. being an arthurian legend fan, i was quite mesmerized with the artwork. unfortunately, i did not buy the LAT deck but bought the Golden Dawn Magikal Tarot instead. i was thinking that the GDMT was more interesting compared to LAT. but i just can't stop thinking about the LAT deck. everytime i go that particular bookstore, i pored and scrutinized the deck longingly. then...i chanced upon this thread....when i go back to that bookstore...I AM GOING TO PURCHASE THE LAT DECK. hehehehe.

WolfSpirit  27 Oct 2002
I'm sorry to abort your little theory about water signs and the Arthurian - I'm a capricorn :D Have to say though my moon sign is Aquarius and my ascendant Scorpio. Only found this out recently, because I always felt only half Capricorn, made me believe all the zodiac signs were bogus.

I found the Arthurian in a bookshop on holiday, really could not resist. The book is also very good, but I just LOVE the deck. I just fall for that kind of artwork. I use the deck for reading, but only for personal matters. It works very good for me so far !!

I also have the hallowquest, I like some cards better than other but over all I find the deck a bit too static, I like some movement or emotion on the cards. And the washer at the ford gives me the creeps, give me a grinning skeleton for death card any time...

Alissa  27 Oct 2002
I just got it, a month ago, and I love this deck.... but I'm an air sign.

I studied Arthurian lit heavily in college (and wrote a thesis on Arthur related themes in Pre-Raphaelite artwork) and even though I know these stories inside and out, I still have to refer to the book farily often.

The deck borrows heavily from the Morte D'Arthur tradiiton (by Mallory) and most of the Cards' tales are from only that telling of the legend (the dolorous stroke, thigh wounds, questing beast, and so much more, only found in Mallory). But it weaves them into Tarot so nicely. That I love.

I just wish there were more emphasis on *other* Arthur storytellings -- Irish, French and Germanic (there is a bit, like Tristan and Isolde (which was originially an Irish tale before retold over and over all over northern europe)).

And yes, I love that Temperance card -- that is just so pretty.

but overall i wanted to chime in as a self-proclaimed "ARTHUR EXPERT" and to also say, gee ain't it a pretty deck along with everyone.

I should be getting this deck sometime this week. :)

It's been on my wish list for quite some time, and a friend of mine put me in touch with someone she knew who cleaning out some unused decks. So finally this deck is gonna come live here with me. :)

I'm looking forward to getting it and doing some readings with it. I'm not an Arthurian expert by far...in fact Mallory's Le Morte d' Arthur is the only Arthur that I've read. And that was back in college (I won't say when *that* was!). But I did read The Mists of Avalon and watched the movie when it came on. :)

I bought a book about this deck yesterday at my little local Half-Price Books...the one that was mentioned earlier in this thread, The Keeper of Words. So now I should be quite set to go on an amazing adventure with this deck.

Oh, by the way, I'm more fire sign than anything else...Leo Sun, Sag rising, Aquarius moon.

This is my second Legend deck. I gave mine away to someone last year...my recent replacement came at ten percent off, as the outside box was slightly aged/worn. I didn't care, but I enjoyed the discount. I got it again because the illustrations of a nice color book by John Matthews, called Classic Celtic Fairy Tales, reminded me that I was missing this style of magical art.
I pulled this out again to compare as I read the threads.
I'm puzzled because this art edition seems to be more vivid and interesting than I remembered. If I take a dark plum book or deep forest green cloth for the background, suddenly the art is more vibrant.
My first Western style deck was Arthurian for interest, Merlin was the second...I enjoyed the Hallowquest studies in a few rounds and don't plan to give Arthurian or Merlin away. But I'm interested in working with readings with the Legend and am working with a five card draw right now: Ten of Cups, Fool, Sun Eight of Spears and The Eight of Shields.
I think I'm going to enjoy this deck very much.
