hello all!
A friend's daughter (9 years old) has recently developed an interest in tarot. While she is currently allowed to use one of her mother's decks (& I would let her use one of my decks that I don't use as often), she has expressed some frustration at not being able to use the decks that her mom and I use most frequently (partially because tarot decks are a very personal thing and partially because the decks aren't always well-suited for beginners).
Tonight she was asking when she could get her own deck, as well as what deck would be good for her, since most of the decks we own aren't the best beginner decks.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a deck for that would be appealing to a younger reader and fairly intuitive? I've been thinking about getting the Whimsical Tarot for her birthday, so if you have any input on it in particular, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks

I think the Whimsical would be great for a 9 yr old.
Somewhere back in the old threads someone posted a similar question. You might want to go see what else people suggested there. I'll try and find it too and move it up for you.

You might like to read through th thread named "gentle decks" as well.
For a 9 yr old girl, you do need to be a bit careful, but my niece (who's right around the same age) loves going through my decks too and I'm always surprised as to which ones she likes. -- Of course I'm always getting new ones LOL So every time she visits there's another one for her to look through. I won't let her use any that are too strange, though I do let her pretty much look through most of them.
But she liked my Tarot of the Old Path and Universal Tarots by De Angelis best so far. When she visited last summer she would sit down and tell stories with the Tarot of the Old Path. For some reason she connected with it very well.

Tarot of the Moon Garden: one of the sweetest, nicest, prettiest, most fun decks I know. Check it out on-line here. Unless the girl is a cynic, in which case she'll find this deck of unicorns, bubbles and dragonflies way too frothy :)

Very well said Diana! I think that's what I was trying to get across when I said I was surprised as to which decks my niece was drawn to. It is a very personal thing and IMO even a child should be allowed to pick their own decks (within reason - not the Manara LOL).
As an example - at first my niece did not like the death card at all! But we sat down and talked about what she didn't like about it. And I explained how it meant that yes certain things were passing away but it also meant that new things were beginning.
Once we talked about it and she could talk about her feelings and I expained a bit more she became much more comfortable with death as a concept not just the death card. It was very much a learning experience.

Thanks for all the wonderful input. It's great being able to get so many perspectives to consider. The 3 of us (me, the mom, and the daughter) will definitely have to talk about this and look over some decks before making a decision.
be well,

I tend to agree with Diana...must be the name :D I've always felt that a big part of my job as a parent is to teach my kids how to deal with the unpleasant parts of life since there's no way to get away from it.
I have an 11 y/o (going on 80 sometimes) who is looking at my Robin Wood Tarot right now and will probably be leaning toward picking that one. The only thing that bothers her about this deck is the nudity (pre-pubescent modesty...hope it sticks!) but she tells me that she's just a kid, she'll adjust.
Just have the child browse through decks to find one that she connects with.

The Hanson Roberts is a nice one, its been metioned in 'gentle decks'. The artwork might appeal to her and it would be a nice easy one for her to learn with or even the Universal Waite - as she gets older, if she takes to the tarot, she'll probably move on to many other decks anyway but at least she will have studied one of the traditional ones :)
