I went to the Mary-el tarot site. I must say, I am absolutely dumbfounded. This art is quite simply some of the most amazing I have ever seen! The colors and detail are hypnotic. This deck will break new ground. It is a classic in the making. Thank you, thank you, thank you Kaz for discovering this for us!

Don't you know posting new decks here is like taking a keg to an AA meeting?!
All kidding aside, I have to agree, the mary-el looks amazing!

Kaz, are you purposefully out to bankrupt me or smething??!! Ah well...
I love the artwork on the Mary-el... But some of the images freak me out a bit. I agree with Jade about the she-male Aces! But I adore the Emperor! Unlike most decks, I actually understand this Emperor! And I love the World and Death.

Mary-el = WOWOWOWOWOWOW! Can't wait for this one.
CityWood = Not exactly my style. Not terrible, but not for me.

I've actually looked at the Mary-El a bunch of times before, and she really is an amazing artist, just have a look at Temperance, the Tower, the Hermit or (as someone mentioned) the Death-card... Stunning.
But maybe it's because I'm still a beginner, I'm having a bit of a problem with the more... hm... grotesque imagery. The Hierophant for example. I think I sort of get the idea, but if I can't stand the picture - how am I going to read with it? Do you ever get problems like these, or is it just me...?? I'd LOVE to have this deck, and I'll probably get it one day (once it's out and I can't think of any other deck to spend my money on...!), But I doubt I'll be able to read with it, just because I have such mixed emotions (love one - "hate" one - love one - "hate" one...) for it...
Anyone got a remedy for deck-disorders like this one...?
Jenny :-)

Don't worry, I'm a freak too Liliana - those aces are absolutely fantastic! And I adore her three of cups. And her Princess of Cups is amazing! Does anyone have any idea how long it will be till this will be published and I can stop drooling at it on the net?

Those aces are certainly not for everyone. I think they have really potent symbolic quality...They depict a unified whole, being at once male and female. I have to admit, they make me squirm a little. Nevertheless, I love this deck. Granted, I won't be reading for mom with it, but for private use I think it will be marvelous. I also relate to the post regarding the love-hate relationship that can be developed with a deck. A good example of this for me is the Haindl deck. The Fool, the Universe and the Aeon cards are among my favorite cards of any deck. However, the Emperor and all the court cards just don't really do much for me (even though I think the art is really of exceptional quality). I love the Haindl deck...would never rid myself of it, but there's that little barrier between us.

thanx, kaz!
i want them both, of course!
the mary-el IS beautiful, but i also don't see really using it for readings...it's what i call an "ooh-aah" deck, i guess.
the citywood reminds me of a cross between the soulcards and the greenwood tarot.
anyway, they're tarot, so i gotta have 'em!

I was pleasantly surprised to stumble in here tonight and find that my deck was the topic of conversation in this folder! I have to thank you all for the incredibly nice things you are saying about it, and for the criticisms too, it helps me out a lot.
I can give some background information so you will understand where I am coming from on some of this stuff but I understand that ultimately it wont be a deck for everyone. Is there a deck out there that appeals to everyone?
I've begun to realize that I've thrown a bunch of images out there with absolutely no explanation of what they mean! At first I wanted the images to speak for themselves and for the most part they have but I think it's about time I start to support them with written explanations.
I plan to come back tomorrow and post a little on the aces and the Hierophant. For now I am hitting the sack!
Nice place you have here:)

WoW! The artist!
Hi! Any idea when the deck will be ready to publish? I've got a feeling a lot of people are really interested. LOVE your cats--Strength, Temperance, etc.
The aces, are they based on Mathew, Mark, Luke & John? I saw a correlation with the 'Angel', Ox, Lion & Eagle.
And about time someone put tatoos on their cards! Yes! Love the fish!

I plan on having all the cards done by early next year. Hopefully they will be published not long after that, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I'm glad you like the cats! I love them too. I have a few more I want to add, though I have to wait for them to want to be on a card I still want somewhere a Jaguar, a snow leopard and a clouded leopard. The clouded leopard especially because they are the only cat considered arboreal. They actually have adaptations so they can climb down a tree headfirst with ease. People in their native habitat call them tree tigers! I find that a really cool metaphor for creation and enlightenment, something that climbs up and down trees like that with the tiger associations too.
Yes, the aces are inspired by the 4 apostles and lots of other things. They are sopposed to be complete essences of the elements carrying a seed within them for the next generation, the 2's etc. They would come after the Kings and then close the circle back to the start of the minors. They are complete elemental creatures, thats why I made them hermaphrodite. I would make things in the origins of the universe as without gender at all but these being complete have both genders fully developed.
All of my people in the cards are symbolic. Different parts of their bodies mean different things. The major chakra points line up with the tree of life; the heart, neck, face, head, hands, feet. The breasts give nourishment and the genitals are passive and active creative energy, the groin or root chakra where the kundalini lies coiled up. It's really not about people at all, it's about the universe. But since they both reflect each other, learning about people will give us insight into the universe and learning about the universe will give us insight into people.
Well, did I just confuse the issue even more? :o
Marie:)

At first glance I didn't really like this deck. But the more I looked at it , the more fascinated I became! It's kind-of like a weird , spastic primal scream! This is not a simple deck. I Love "Justice" a card I usually don't care for. And I Like "The World". I just could not like the High Priestess no matter how hard I tried. And the "Hierophant", um...........LOL. The babies, if that's what they are, look like weird space creatures. Oriental, Egyptian reincarnational deja-vu, sci-fi Art! This is not a very shy deck, nor for the faint of heart! The Ace of Swords and the Ace of Wands seem disturbed, but alltogether they are kind-of beautiful! Who knows , I May just buy it whenever published!

Thanks a bunch for posting with us Marie - it's really awesome to get some insight into the symbolism behind the cards from the artist herself!
