Rohrig Tarot: WOWOWOWOWOW!!!!

Okay, as you might've read in my thread 'I had an Accident', yesterday I was forced into buying two Tarot decks totally against my will, by a group of Japanese Tourists who thought I was somebody famous, and a cashier all-to-eager to take my hard-earned cash. (Honest! :p )

Well, one of those decks which I didn't mean to get, was the Rohrig Tarot, and I think its so wonderful, that I have to share my thoughts with you!

To start off, this deck is onew that I wasn't attracted to instantly. In fact, I could've bought many time in the past, but didn't, cuz I saw only a few cards, and didn't think I'd like it. I was wrong! The cards themselves, although rather long, can still be shuffled (If you hold them so they are vertical in your hands instead of horizontal!) and the backs are what you first notice... The main colour of the backs is space-blue, but which has some purple and black mixed in... It is a very spacey picture of a huge wave, rolling through an interstellar cosmos of stars, comets, and galaxies... Absolutely stunning!

This deck is based on the Thoth, instead of the RWS, so the Minor Arcana have the same keywords as the Thoth deck on top of them, which is useful, if you can understand the key words! (I had to look up indolence and debauch in the dictionary!) The Minors are illustrated tgoo, which is a bonus.

The Majors are absolutely amazing! They are so full of symbolism its unbelievable, and each card (With both Majors and Minors) has the artist's 'notes', and sometimes sketches on it, to varying degrees... Which is useful, cuz he sometimes adds in meanings to the cards! Each Major has the Hebrew letter, Rune, and Astrological symbol on it too, somwhere.

The art itself has a very sexy feeling to it. Not in th eerotic way, mind you, but in that 'sexy' way... I hope you understand what I mean, cuz I can't explain it! The art is also so detailed, and in some cards you can even see the individual arm and facial hairs on the people! It is do detalied and realistsic, that at first I thought it was a photographic deck! (Its not!)

Some of the cards include a bit of humour too, such as Justice, which has a Lightsabre featuring prominently in it... Some cards even wanna make you go into the picture and give the person a huge great big hug, cuz they look so sad and faliing, such as the little man on a rock in the 7 of Discs, or make you wanna go celebrate with the characters, like with the 6 of Discs.

The Court Cards are also very well done, really evoking the meaning through what is in each court, such as the expression of the court, what they are doing, the artists' notes, what the court is wearing, what is around them, what colours are used, etc.... Vey VERY good. The Princess of Swords in this deck spoke to me like no other, simply because of what was happening to a piece of rope in the card! Wow. Simply, wow.

Anyway, I'm gonna go and enjoy this deck some more... I really think its in my top 5 decks... (Now that's saying something!)

I'm so glad those Japanese Tourists unknowingly forced me to buy this deck. Goddess Bless those Japs!! ;)

I bought this deck a while back.. silly me I didn't realise that it was a "jumbo" size deck so I gave it away.

I agree it is a beautiful deck and quite inspirational. I wish it came in the regular card size though. I just can't deal with those big decks jumping out at me.

If the Rohrig Deck ever comes out in the regular card size I'll be the first to buy it.

Pedeka  11 Apr 2002
Kiama.. it is a sexy deck... sexy like a corvette is sexy not like a stripper is sexy ;) Its like Euro sexy or something..LOL

truthsayer  11 Apr 2002
i think the word i would use to describe the rohrig is "sensual". it's suggestive but gives the imagination room to feed. porno doesn't leave anything to be imagined. i find what i imagine much sexier than having all the mystery removed. the card that comes immediately to mind is the 6 of cups. HOT!!!!!! i really like the high priestess, too. if i meditate on the images, i swear they start feeling 3 dimensional after a while. i can't do that w/ many decks. most seem one or at best 2 dimensional.

i think you will really enjoy rohrig. i consider it in a different category of decks than the robin wood. i can do a reading w/ robin wood w/o getting lost in the imagery. rohrig is too intense for me to do anything but personal readings. i'll never give it up!

I love the Rohrig deck -- artistically it's one of my favorites. I agree that the deck is sexy in the Corvette kind of way -- very slick.

I haven't tried to read with it yet. Did you get the book? It too is very slick, and has full color pictures of all the cards.

So exactly what did the Japanese tourists do to convince you to buy it? [wink] And what did you force them to buy in return?

CocoBird: Where can the book for the deck be found? What publishing company is it, and what's its title? I heard that there was one recetny; published, translated from the original German, but haven't seen it.

Kiama...you are really bad for my bank balance!! I cannot afford a new deck at the mo' but I'm finding it very difficult to resist...Tell me a few negative things about it PLEASE :TFOOL

Liliana  12 Apr 2002
I have a friend who used this deck, always thought it was neat, but I was looking at some reviews online, and I have to disagree with the pregnant princess of pents, a pregant queen is fine, but princesses should enbody more of a maiden than a mother hehe

Jewel  12 Apr 2002
Truthsayer I totally know what you mean. That was my same impression of the deck. It is a great deck to do exercises where you enter the cards as well.

Kiama, I got the book used through Amazon. It is really nice, you will want it. It is called Rhorig, on Tuesday I can post the ISBN# and stuff for you if you would like.

That would be great, Jewel, thanks! I want to order this book from my local bookstore, but they're not very good at locating Tarot books if they're not published by Llewellyn or US Games, so I need to give them as much info as possible!

Hi, Kiama and everyone

Here is the intel about the Rohrig book --

The Rohrig Tarot Book by Carl W. Rohrig/Francesca Marzano-Fritz

Publisher is Bluestar Communications, 44 Fear Glenn, Woodside, California, 94062, USA

Telephone number is 800-6-Bluestar

ISBN is 1-885394-18-7

There is also a music CD called Tarot-Music for Readings that you can order from them. It seems like you can order directly from the publisher.

The book is softcover, 160 pages, and has full color illustrations of all the cards. There are a few pages about each of the majors, and a few lines about each of the minors. It is US $15.95, and definitely worth it just for the pictures...

I got my Rohrig about two months ago, and honestly it's what started me on my tarot binge. I just love it. It's not always the happiest deck, and it can be blunt, but I click with it. I think it's a very sexy deck -- get a load of the Princess of Wands! Even this straight girl says hubba-hubba! ;) Yet in the middle of all these sexy images, you have the Lovers -- one of the most beautiful versions of this card I've seen. It really connotes a gentle intimacy. The only thing I don't really care for are all the disembodied breasts floating around!

For those of you who dont like how large this deck is, have you ever considered doing "deck surgery". This is when you use very good scissors or an exacto knife to cut the borders off a deck, I know people who dont like keywords have done it with other decks, including Thoth. It also brings an interesting openess to the cards,I love borderless decks. I hear theres also this little thing you can buy at stationary stores that will round the corners for you. I think Im going to get this deck, and after I work with it for awhile and really get to know the cards I might do this :)

I want to learn to do this properly. It seems like there'd be almost no way to get all the edges perfectly even with each other, and if the edges aren't all identical, it'd be easy to pick cards out of a fan or while cutting the deck because they "felt" right in the tactile sense as opposed to the intuitive sense, etc. Uh, does that make sense? :| So, how do you make them even?

...Maybe we should move this aspect of the thread to Talking Tarot...

Liliana  21 Apr 2002
From what I heard the best way is using an exacto knife, and by making a template. If you use the exacto knife to cut out just the center of the card, the other piece is a template you can fit over the other cards to make sure you cut them all exactly the same. Some people have tried using one of those paper cutters with the grid, but the cutting part isnt sharp enough so it mangles the cards.

Zhritza  22 Apr 2002
template. got it. thanks! :)
