i found a good deal on the tarot of light and shadow. it came highly recommended from the reviews that i read. it's a black and white deck. the art is incredible since all prints are carved onto block and stamped on a card to create the design. it had to be a labor of love b/c the cards are so intricate. i think i would have pulled my hair out trying to carve 78 separate designs. the cards are large and cumbersome for me to use. they are based on the rider waite smith deck so transitioning to reading them shouldn't be a problem. what i like best about the deck is brian williams writing in the book. it has a BOOK not just a LWB which makes the set alone worth the money. he makes the images so easy to interpret. his writing is clear and uncluttered. i know a beginner would find this book easy to understand for reading this deck. the set comes in a sturdy box so you wouldn't have to worry about separating the book and cards. i know most ppl prefer colored decks as do i but if you find colors distract you when reading the cards, you'll find the black and white imagery ideal to focus on. i wouldn't call the art lovely but it's a notable deck worth checking out particularly if you like decks like the victoria regina.

I just got this deck last weekend. :) I'd been holding off on commenting until I got a chance to read with it, which I haven't yet; but I love the art, it feels very powerful and happy. I was actually surprised at how different the imagery of this deck feels compared to that of the Victoria Regina. The Light and Shadow is very, very bold (not that the VR is wimpy or something, but the art has a delicacy to it). A month ago I would never have considered a black and white deck, and now I have two! What have you people done to me, anyway? :D
I hope to review it for Aeclectic once I read with it a couple of times...

i agree that the light and shadow deck is bolder than the VRT. VRT isn't carved from block prints tho. i believe they are from actual victorian pictures instead of a carving. this would allow the VRT to have more delicate, refined art work. i believe the LST comes entirely from the mind of michael goepferd. it would be quite difficult to do the delicate lines of the VRT as a block print. the books are different, too. i think LST is more rws based than VRT. i hope to be getting VRT in the next week so i'll be able to make a better comparison once i have them both. VRT appears more feminine, LST more masculine. from reading deck reviews, i've gathered that the world spirit deck was influenced by the LST. so if you are a world spirit lover then you'll probably enjoy LST, too. i believe it was diane wilkes at tarot passages that compares world spirit to being what the LST would look like colored in. so what does this lead me to do, friends? order the world spirit, of course. i didn't think i would like it until i saw that i like LST.
what have we done to you, dear qolus? why it seems to me that we've made you happy!!
cricket, i'm pretty sure there are more black and white decks out there. i have another one but it's so old that the box looks moldy or water damaged. i think it's called the brotherhood of light deck. a friend gave it to me over 15 years ago but i've never read w/ it. it's never felt like my kind of deck but i wouldn't part w/ it either!

Not to dissuade you from getting the World Spirit, but I think the two decks are pretty distinct from one another in terms of how the art, uh, "feels." Yes, the Light and Shadow is multicultural in a very good way, but the art is really somewhat harder and blunter to me than that of the World Spirit, which, while being bold as well, has a warm-fuzziness to it.
Of course I'm happy... I'm just poor :D :D

*cricket starts going through sites now like a crazed woman*
*she ooohs and aaahhhhhhhs over many many decks*
*she starts adding up a few prices.... and wonders if she could sell her children off to afford a bunch more decks* (j/k folks... would sell the SO first ;))
Strange2 - Either I owe you, or I should really dislike you for putting me on the right track here. *LOL* But I think I like you for it. A lot.
*she goes back to looking over decks... wondering if there's a way to mortgage the house anytime soon.....*

Hi Cricket!
You asked...
Anybody know of any more interesting B&W decks?
You might want to check out our database at
www.tarotgarden.com
If you go to advanced search, then category, and
choose b/w (which also includes other 2-colored decks, such as blue & white etc) you'll find LOTS
(some available, some quite rare & unavailable) We
still have more to enter too.
