How come some Tarot decks have 56 cards and some have 78?

Well, I'm still pretty new at Tarot...not having studied for a year yet. From my understanding, true Tarot decks have 78 cards. There are majors decks with the 22 majors. The decks with other amounts may be oracle decks.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge will come along and help out with this question.

Most tarot deck will have 78 cards. They break down like this:
22 Major Arcana *This is the Fool through the World. They are usually numbered with roman numerals.
56 Minor Arcana * 4 suits each consisting of ace through 10 and 4 court cards titled Page, Knight, Queen and King or equivalent.
There are major arcana only decks numbering 22. I don't recall ever hearing of a minor arcana only deck, but if one is available it would number 56.
Hope this helps!

Although I'm not sure I do wonder if you're talking about an Oracle deck here?

I have a tarot deck with 83 cards: the Faery Wicca Tarot. The five extras are 'helping' cards.
I haven't heard of any decks with 56 cards. However, some decks have 22 cards; only the major Arcana.

I have the Deva tarot in my collection which has 92 cards as the artist added to the 4 elements a 5th one, the akasha (aether) element.
