Prediction Tarot

I am really fond of the prediction tarrot deck I found here. http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/prediction/index.html

It says that this deck is for display only. I was wondering if any of you know if there is a place where I can buy one? I'd also like to know if the paper is high quality.

Being an artist, I am VERY picky when it comes to the art on the deck. Not only the art, but the art on the back of the cards, the font, wether or not there are discriptions on cards *Don't like them*.

Basically I'm looking for something like the prediction deck. I choose it for it's simple yet accurate representations. I also like the suits. They are interesting to look at, but they are simple and have a "clean look to them"

Another Deck I am fond of is the H.R.Giger cards. I was very dissapointed to see that there are only 22 cards availible.

If anyone has some info as to how I could come by a deck of prediction tarot or something like I described I would apprciate it. If not, thanks for taking the time to read this anyway.

according to solandia's short review of it, the prediction tarot came out in the eighties and is now OOP. you might want to try tarot garden for rare and OOP decks. just be prepared to spend some big bucks.

Zhritza  22 May 2002
On the bright side, the Giger deck has been reprinted and is only $15 with its hardcover book, which I understand is quite extensive in its card descriptions, etc.

Kaz  22 May 2002
qolus, where can you get the giger cards for that price?
it's on my wishlist for some time......

Hello, Destroy The Human, and welcome to the boards!

If you really want an OOP deck really badly, your first port of call could be to ask for one in a trade.... Go to the Trading forums here on Aelectic, and post a thread telling others which deck you are looking for, and whether you would be willing to trade decks, money, whatever for it....

If that fails, you could go to TarotGarden, and use their search service. You give them your email addy and info about the deck you are looking for, and what price range you would be willing to pay, and they will try and track it down for you. They are currently searching for my first ever Tarot deck, published by a teen girl magazine 4 years ago, and whether or no they actually find a copy will show just how wonderful they are! Although so far, I've had no news, but their service and speed of information has been impeccable. I highly recommend this servce!

Thank you all for your help! I will try tarot graden and the trade forums and see what I come up with. ^_^

Does anyone know of decks similar to the ones I mentioned? I perfer cards with darker art, but these seem like they are harder to find. This deck would be for myself, *dont wanna scare off ppl I'm trying to read for ^_-*. I looked at the vampire deck, while it looks very nice, I can't really take it to serisouly and I find it...well i find it a bit corny.

Thx for the suggestion Liliana. I did take a look at this deck. It seems very interesting, but it's not the deck for me. I'm looking for something with a more suggestively dark theme. Nothing over the top, something much like the ansata deck, but a whole deck. *It seems like all my favorites are only major arcana!*

Liliana  23 May 2002
Maybe the Vertigo Tarot? Its a dark art style, but Im not sure if the art is your style or not. Its being reissued in July

Ansata deck is still available in Germany.

The prediciton deck is the one which illustrates my German edition of a Sasha Fenton book. Fournier is a French printing house. Maybe Roderick Somerville playing cards can help you. I got my Greenwood deck there and enjoyed doing business with them.

If you like dark decks, what about the "Black Tarot", Vampire tarot or maybe Londa tarot.

Zhritza  24 May 2002
DestroyTheHuman, have you looked at the Secret Tarot (Tarocchi dei Segreti) by Marco Nizzoli? This is published by Lo Scarabeo, and is not to be confused with the Secret Tarot by Lyle and Jones, which is published by Simon and Schuster, and is a lovely deck but is really very shiny and happy. :) The Nizzoli Secret is dark and brooding but not exactly scary. It has a fair amount of nudity but is not especially sexual, and it has a lushness that I think you might like if you like the Prediction (I drool over that one too).

There are some pix here: http://www.themysticeye.com/pics/secret.htm
and some different ones here: http://www.wicce.com/segretipix.html

kaz, you can get the Giger Tarot through normal venues now; go to Amazon and do a search for "giger tarot," it'll come right up. If you have a lot of trouble getting it, we have a few at my store and I'd be glad to do a trade with you, but I doubt you'll find that necessary (I'm in the US). Amazon says it has 2 in stock now. However, it's published by Taschen in Germany, so maybe you can get it more locally...

Keslynn  24 May 2002
I'm not very much for dark decks at all, but I second the recommendation for amazon. Also, I've found tons of decks for cheap on eBay, including out of print ones. The trick is to do a price comparison so you don't get ripped off, but generally you can find bargains.

DestroyTheHuman  24 May 2002
That deck is perfect! The Secret tarot you mentioned Qolus. I looked at some of the other secret tarot decks, but the one you specifically pointed out is perfect for me! I cant wait to order it! Thank you! :D

I've just obtained a copy of the Prediction Tarot on E-Bay. I totally love it! It has all the advantages of antique decks, but it's more esthetically pleasing (at least to me). I've read several negative reviews where the cards are described as greyed-out, bland, with harsh, stern faces. I like the art style, which is very realistic, and I like the "old-fashioned" look of them. They seem to me to be how Tarot cards *should* look. I also like that the imagery on the Majors is very basic, and that the creators didn't start jumping all over the Majors and putting in their own vision, but pretty much stuck to the classic images.

I also like the Minors -- very much based on the Marseilles, but extremely realistically drawn.

Does anyone else have/like this deck? I'd be curious to know what those who prefer older decks think of it. Click here to read a rare positive review of it. There were recently three copies of it for bid at E-Bay, so from that I assume that it must come up there fairly frequently. Right now it's my favorite!

I'm glad you like it, DTH... I actually own it now, and I love it too :)

I think that if the Prediction had initially been released, say, within the last five years instead of when it actually came out, it would have done much better and might still be in print. To me at least, it seems like when the newer mainstream decks started showing up in the '80s -- the Norse, Morgan-Greer, Mystic, Cat People -- there was much more fear or distate about darkness and "grey areas" in decks' artwork. Maybe a deck even had to have a certain quota of sweetness and light to even get published by a bigger publisher. Personally, I blame Reagan. :D

catboxer  25 Jun 2002
I have to concur with all of you -- the Prediction is a truly lovely deck. Its execution is extremely conservative, which I like, but modern at the same time.

DTH, have you considered looking into any antique decks? They usually aren't "dark," as you put it, but they share the same kind of simplicity that you see in the Prediction cards. I just ordered the Soprafino pack, a beautiful Italian set from about 1835, and Lo Scarabeo publishes a passable reconstructed version of the Visconti-Sforza deck, which is, as we say in the history business, "where it all began."

Just a general update: the Ansata is now once again available in North America, too, courtesy of U.S. Games. We used to have to import it at Tarot Garden, now we can get it domestically at a lower price (and pass the savings on to you... hoo hah!)

Hi, Qolus, I agree, I think the Prediction was both after and ahead of its time -- it would have done great in the '20s, let's say, or at present, but I think in the mid-'80s people were mostly looking for R-W-S type decks or else culturally themed decks.

Catboxer, you put it very well when you say that the art is conservative and modern at the same time. On several of the Majors there are faint colored bubbles which can be seen floating in the background, which reminds me of the Haindl deck. Also, the Swords cards are drawn so realistically that the reflections on the metal are quite striking to look at.
