Sprial Tarot -- opinions please

hi guys. I'm still looking for "the" deck....

and upon seeing this deck talked about in the "One Deck" thread.... I looked it up --- and I'm diggin' it.

however, I could only see a few cards -- and at least one of the cards made me say "WHAT???" --- this was the Lovers card. ugh. tacky. but, at least it makes me feel something. I liked several of the others though, especially the majors.

This deck has some mixed reviews -- so, I'd like to hear some opinons about this deck from other aeclectites...... (before I go run out and spend money, which is what I'll prob. end up doing anyway!)

thanks.

ERGK -- just saw there was a previously existing thread on this.... sorry! but, still, if there are any recent opinions..... I'd like to hear 'em.

He Joya

I have the deck and i like it, but somehow i don't use them al that often.
BTW you can see the complete deck on www.tarot.com
That's how i came to the conclusion that it was a deck that i had to buy ;)

I'm still looking for THE DECK too ;)

i really like the majors of the spiral but the minors leave me flat. i just don't feel a consistency between the two. i've also noticed this happening w/ tarot of the old path and the gendron. great majors, nothing happens for me w/ the minors. it's exciting when i find a deck that both work for me.

The Spiral is my main reading deck, the cards are nice to handle, good quality card stock and they shuffle easily.
The Majors are more detailed than the Minors but after you've used the deck for a while you won't notice. The LWB doesn't go into much detail but I use R/W interpretations and my own feelings. There is nothing offensive about this deck at all, the colours are beautiful, online scans don't do it justice, and there is also a book wrote for the deck but I can't track down a copy lol Hope this helps :)

This one happens to be near the top of my wish list!

I have had this deck for years and have always liked it a lot. I think one of my favorite cards is the Wheel of Fortune depicting the three fates. The inconsistency between the Majors and Minors has not been a problem for me, and that is odd as it bothers me terribly with the Gendron deck. I would comfortably recommend the Spiral.

Having used the Spiral tarot for about a year now - it feels like an old friend. :)

I especially like the Princess cards.

My girlfriend thinks I like it because a lot of the women in the deck have red hair! lol

I had ordered the Spiral Tarot after I had seen a few pics of it and as it was listed as "Celtic" but when I finally got my deck I felt somehow disappointed as there were only a few cards with Celtic background but a lot more with 19th/20th century pictures on.

I cannot see any relation with Celts in a Jockey with a Champions garland on the 6 of wands. Ok, this pic is ok to give you an idea of the 6 of wands card but has nothing in common with Celts. See what I mean?

The artwork is ok, the cards are suitable for small hands as they are the normal playing cards size and you can use the deck even as beginner.

The Majors are mostly Celtic mythology, the minors kind of went a totally different route. Im not so into Celtic stuff anymore so i outgrew the Majors, but i like the more modern minors, and especially the courts which express court card meanings better than any other deck Ive seen. And I adore the Princesses too, I see my elder daughter as the Princess of Pentacles, and my younger as Princess of Cups.

:THP

I've had this deck recommended to me several times, but somehow it's never done much for me. For some reason I find the colors kind of wan and sickly. Is that weird?

Hi Joya250!

Are you any nearer deciding?!

I love this deck and I feel a bit bereft as it's out on loan at the moment. I did originally feel miffed that the artwork between the Majors and the Minors was so different - if it was all done in the same way as the Majors I don't think I'd need any other decks! However, I've got used to it and it always gives me accurate readings. The person who's borrowed it had seen quite a few other decks I've got, but felt that was the only one she gelled with.

If you do get it, I definitely recommend getting the accompanying book (which was strangely hard to find). While it is RW inspired, the Majors hold a wealth of mythology from all cultures which can be extremely useful in intepreting the cards - eg: the Hanged Man being based on Dionysius (Greek god of wine) inspired me to ask a client if she'd turned to drink at the point in question, which turned out to be the case. Each time I use the cards I see more and more with them - things I can't possibly know.

I'd definitely recommend this deck!

For me the minors' English (and in many cases Victorian) feel meshes well with the generally northern European references of the majors. I know Greece isn't northern Europe, but as with many depictions of the Greek pantheon, these images are very, uh, white. So the deck doesn't feel divided to me. I do regret not getting the deck and book set; I'll eventually need to hunt that book down, which can be a process, as I recently found out regarding the Haindl.

Jewel  15 May 2002
Qolus, did you check out Amazon.com? I am not sure if they carry the Spiral book, but I recently purchased the Haidl book from them, the new one that combines Majors and Minors, not the two separate volumes. It is also by Rachel Pollock so I decided to go with the one instead of buying 2. If you need me to I can give you the info on it (title & ISBN).

Zhritza  15 May 2002
I just found the 2 used, I decided to get them that way in case the revised version had been shortened. But I had to get them from a store I don't like, and they're gonna smell like yucky incense for the rest of their lives... :P It wasn't really that big of an ordeal, just sorta annoying... Thanks for the offer :D

Kaz  15 May 2002
hey jewel, please post that info about the haindl book written by rachel pollack? i still have the deck on my wishlist and i would like the book as well then i think.......
