Other than hockey?
Hmmmm...
Dogs...that's been done before.
Jane Austen characters. I love Austen's books!
I've been working with some students from India and taking Indian cooking classes...so a deck about India.
Something that is done in the Impressionist style. Most of my favorite artists are Impressionists.
I don't think Scottish Country Dancing, English Country Dancing, or Contra Dancing would be easy to turn into a deck...but I like doing those, too.
A penguin deck. I collect penguins...well, not *live* ones. :P
Any of those ideas wierd enough? :P

I'm a big fan of Charles Dickens, so a deck of Dickens characters would be great.
And I would definitely like deck with sharks, or marine life in general, as a theme.

Since we're all thinking of book related ones... what about a deck based on the works of Bret Easton Ellis! (You know... the writer of the 1980's classic Amarican Psycho) It would certainly be a deck exploring the dark side!!! :TDEV
What about a deck celebrating italian scooters! Every card features the main subject of the card on a 1950's Vespa or Lambretta!!! :P
Potatoe chips (or 'Crisps' to the Brits) in the shape of Major Arcana's profiles?
Cloud cards!!! Photos of real clouds that appear in the shapes relative to the card they appear on!
(Ok... don't think I would buy any of these decks... but I know some VERY avid collectors that just couldn't go past them! :P)

i am a nut for cultural decks so i agree with previous speaker who wanted a indian tarot.
i would love to see a tarot with hindu themes, or a buddha tarot:)
i did own the secret dakini but it was not for me and not a real tarot anyway.
what else?
how about a 1001 night tarot?
i so love my kazanlar tarot with it's persian theme and want more of that, rich, colourful and filled with story-telling.
i am also a big fan of Feist fantasy books and would love a tarot based on the "riftwar" series.

I love all these ideas -- especially the X-Men, 1001 Nights, Jane Austen, Impressionist, Robin Hood, and penguin ideas!
One I've thought about a lot is a Survivor tarot. Does anyone else watch the show? I've been trying to pick which people would fit best:
Fool: Sean from the first season (man he was stupid) -- though I also thought about Clarence, Amber, and several from the current season
Devil: Jerri -- though I thought about Rich and Lex
Four of Pentacles: The Samburu alliance of four who lost through their greed and rudeness
Two of Cups -- Rodger and Elisabeth (they were so darn cute!)
Empress -- Tina (a maternal figure who won)
Nine of Cups -- maybe Elisabeth? She got engaged right after the show
Anyone else wanna play? ;)

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking, maan... Garion's sort of sensible for a Fool at the outset, but he has to become more Fool-like to get started on his path... The only question is, who gets to be the Magician? It doesn't have to be Belgarath, couldn't it be Polgara? But then who would be the Priestess? That woman from the fens, maybe, and Layla makes a perfect Empress... We all know Torak is the Devil, Mr. Bondage ihimself... Crap, this is too much fun!
(shakes head like dog emerging from water) Uh... got lost there for a moment. I would sort of like to see a tarot based on The Who's rock opera Tommy, but I think maybe ten people would buy it altogether.

O i hope i get to see that one soon:)
O Quolus great idea!!! Barak would be 8 Strenght ( changing in a bear) and Silk can be seven of swords.
Garion is perfect for a Fool. In the beginning when he does not know what the mark on his hand means! That's the Fool with his backpack ;)

I think a parrot deck would be good, since I own four parrots.
Perhaps endangered species could be the majors.
The minors could be divided by continent. The South American minors would include Amazons, Pionus, macaws (the ones not endangered).
The Australian minors would include budgies, cockatiels and cockatoos.
The African minors would include greys, lovebirds, Capes and the other poicephalus.
Then the final one would include Indonesia, India, etc. and include Electus, ring necks, Alexandrians....
Since parrots have different personalities, it shouldn't be hard to correlate each type of bird with an archtype. And the deck would be very pretty, too.

I would like a Rocky Horror Picture Show deck :)
And totally unrelated, a good Christian deck not specific to any denomination.
Let me think, in the survior tarot, maybe Pascal and Neleh on the 10 of Pentacles, since they act like father/daughter? The host tallying the votes for the Tower? One of the cars they always wi as the Chariot? The Money as the World? Immunity Idol/Necklace on the Sun?

I would like to see one based off the Victorian Meaning of flowers. Different in my mind than the herbal tarot that is out there currently.
Or an insect/spider tarot. Nothing creepy. Many insects and spiders have local folklore superstitions associated with them and I think it could work.
Also, A Yiddish Tarot.
Someone else mentioned Hindu Tarot- which I also think would also be neat as well.

Anyone else read Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series? That would make a great deck. So many possibilities...
Perrin or Egwene as the Moon
the Amyrlin Seat as Justice
Lews Therin and Ilyena as the lovers
Moiraine as Strength
I could go on but I won't. ;-)
Also, I'm into birds. A bird deck would be neat. You could use all the characteristics of different breeds. They're such charming creatures.

rocky horror would make a great deck! i also never see enough cat decks. ;) LOL at least a reprint of tarot for cats so all you feline-fanatics can get a copy. a deck of classic authors would be interesting. anybody every play the kids' game authors? it could be a spin off of that one. then there's always the old maid deck. :D i love roses and would love to see a roses deck. i have the sacred rose for that reason but it's too heavy for what i have in mind. something light and beautiful-maybe painted in watercolors like impressionist style or the legend arthurian. a deck of impressionist paintings would be wonderful.
i'm such a star trek fan that i'd love to see a deck for each spin off series. jean-luc picard as the emperor. beverly crusher as the empress. deanna troi as the high priestess. fans or data are the fool. worf would be strength or the hanged man. the magician would be geordi laforge since he seems to work miracles over those engines. benjamin sisko(ds9) would have to be the hierophant. the borg would be death or the tower. ambassador spock-temperance maybe. gosh! i have enough here to start a deck! there is just so much potential here. :) i can't stand jonathan frakes(#1) so i just have a mental block to a card for him. maybe him and deanna as the lovers but i think she is too good for him.

what great idea! i do like Q as the devil b/c he does behave in that way--playing on the characters shadow sides and temptations. odo is perfect for justice! belana and tom would be great lovers. who would be the hermit? troi's mother(lugwananna? troi)-the moon b/c of the crazy thing her betazed hormones lead her and other to do? earth-the world. the worm hole denizons as judgement? swords suit would be starships-air/weapons. one planet-pentacles. cups would have to be all these weird trek romances b/t terrans and/or ET's. wands would be technology both medical and otherwise? the next gen character who died-ex-security officer that later came back as a romulan officer? i can't think of anything for the star. maybe wesley crusher, nog, and jake sisko for the sun? interesting that i can't think of any high profile daughters except torres and paris's newborn. does she have a name? maybe she's the star.

Hmmm Or it would be the chariot!
O and i want Julian Bashier( if you write it like that) some where in the deck... Page of cups?
He and O'Brian would make an exellent 5 of wands.....All that competing ;)

voyager would be good for either b/c of that hope factor. i know what you mean about wesley crusher. i went to a ST con a few years back and the staff from ST running the show were bad mouthing the guy who played wesley and william shatner who played captain kirk. at that time the wesley actor has quit STNG and was working in some radio shack. he'd gotten piericngs that weren't approved of by the management and maybe even a tatoo. TNN has been showing clips of the wesley actor during airings of STNG. he really needs to have an attitude adjustment even there. he really seems to hate being a part of ST as a child actor b/c the girls only want to know him b/c he played wesley. life's rough but i think a shift in attitude might keep the girls after they give over star fever. 5 of wands for bashir & o'brien would be pretty cool-playing a game of darts maybe. julian bashir is a difficult one b/c of his complex personality as MD and a genetically enhanced human. the 7 of swords comes to mind b/c of his unexpected advantage he got over others b/c of what his parents did illegally to enhance his abilities.
something w/ a bar in the pentacles has to be quark's bar. what about guinan? maybe she'd make a better HP. the chariot probably has to be the enterprize. maybe the star could be janeway on the deck of voyager entering the wormhole or was it a time warp? shadowed in the background is belana giving birth. i want the doctor to do something. he might make a good knight of wands. i don't even want to think about jonathon archer of "enterprize" yet. they haven't won me over yet. kai wynn would be the dark side of the hierphant. i can't think of a place for gul dukat yet or what's his name who rules the klingon empire until worf kills him to finally settle than da** honor issue. alexander as a page of cups b/c of his gentleness and youth. nog page of pentacles. who's rom? jake sisko page of wands b/c he wants to be a writer--borrowing this idea from the victoria regina using pens as wands.
i guess we should take this to another place or continue this thread elsewhere. this is such fun to play tarot w/ fellow trekkies!

ok, maan. i won't spoil anything for you. i assumed falsely what i was saying was common knowledge. i agree julian deserves better than a pip but the scene itself is appropo and true. nelix would definitely make a great 2 of pentacles b/c he's constantly juggling responsibilities. what about 7 of 9? i'm starting to wonder if she'd make a good hanged one or strength--same problem i have w/ worf! LOL what about the wheel of fortune? some kind of time warp or worm hole w/ ships spinning out of it? i agree that harry kim would make a good page of pentacles. i think katherine janeway would make a good queen of swords b/c of her intellect, depression, and determination.
okay, so maybe we need to look at creating this deck. we're proving to have wonderful ideas here. i have no idea how to create the images. i know how to write the LWB/book and choose who for what. are we ready to approach paramount pictures yet to avoid copyright infringement? LOL
sam, i'm pretty sure the dolphin oracle is still in print b/c i've seen it recently. it's pretty tiny for a deck--may an inch or so wide and long. you might want it for what it represents but you need to do a size big enough to shuffle!

you know, there are just so many wonderful characters on STNG, DS9, and Voyager that i think we will need to do alternative cards for some of the cards like chris paradisi did in the new rock and roll tarot. julian bashir works as the hermit b/c he is isolated but so are all the ship captains and commanders like picard, sisko, and janeway. all very alone in their decisions and need to keep a distance from the crew to maintain military discipline in case they need to send someone a dangerous mission. how horrible to send someone to their death so they have to train themselves to put things in an objective manner even if their emotions beg to grieve and feel guilt. so i can easily see more than one hermit card.
i keep trying to think of a good place for kira. the queen of wands comes to mind b/c she has such a firey nature-that red hair. but then she has such a spiritual side, too. there seems to be such a struggle in her b/t the spiritual and profane sides of love. how many lovers did she have on the show? so the lovers comes to mind for her b/c of her personal journey into discovering the many kinds of love. i'm not sure how i'd do the card but somehow about the choices she makes b/t the sacred love she found in the prophets and the sensual loves of her life. benjamin sisko would somehow been involved in the prophets thing b/c he represented her ideal and belief in the bajoran prophets.
man! it's about time for me to get my wading boots on b/c it's getting deep in here! LOL
i can't envision the xfiles tarot yet. i'll have to think on that one. anyone see the season finale tonight? what did you think?

How about Jeff Probst as the Hierophant? And Susan and Kelli and the infamous speech as the three of swords.
One "theme" deck that I would love to see is a movie theme. Have William Wallace's sword stuck in the ground from the ending scene of Braveheart as the ace of swords. The scene where Commodos rides into Rome on his chariot as the Chariot. Princess Buttercup and Wesley as the Lovers (from Princess Bride). I could go on forever but I have to go to work.

 This thread has turned into a monster!
maan, that's a damn good question about Beldin... Belgarath has to be the Magician, Aldur has to be the Hermit... Maybe Beldin is a good Page of Swords, because some of the older decks use that card to mean someone who isn't what they seem. But he's too old to be a Page! And then there's Vella. I'm in love with Vella, incidentally. :| Queen of Wands?
If anyone here besides me is still a Xena fan, there was a majors deck someone put online that used images from Bitter Suite (the fisrt singing episode, that was structured around the tarot). I don't know if it's still posted somewhere, but I'd guess it is. After six seasons, it certainly seems Xena could be expanded into a complete deck. The big question, of course, is which death to use for Death :D

For all those interested in a Star Trek tarot, you might be interested to know that there was apparently one under development at one point, but the project was dropped later for reasons I have been unable to determine so far. I received information about a deck under development some time around when "Voyager" started airing, with a stated publication date of 1995. A number of cards were actually designed -- I have several print-sized copies of the illustrations -- but obviously, the project never came to complete fruition.
I keep intending to contact the artist to find out more of the story behind what happened -- while I have a mailing address, I have no e-mail address, and unfortunately my preference for e-mail communication is so strong that I keep putting off writing an "old-fashioned" letter to request the information. Eventually, I hope to place a few scans of the pictures I *do* have on Lori's and my website, but given that they are print-sized and not card-sized -- and I have them framed at that -- I haven't yet taken them off the wall and tried to figure out how I'm going to fit them on my scanner!
Of the illustrations I was able to view or obtain before the project went kaput, there was Julian Bashir on the "Fool" card, Roddenberry himself was used for the "Magician" card, Deanna Troi was the "High Priestess," Sarek and Amanda were "The Lovers," Spock was the "Hermit," DS9 was the "Wheel of Fortune," and Uhura was the "Star."
For the minor arcana, the Captains were to be used as the "King" cards (renamed "Monarchs," in order to avoid using the term "King" to describe Janeway, I guess). I have copies of Sisko as the Monarch of Swords, and Janeway as the Monarch of Pentacles. I assume Kirk was designated the Monarch of Wands, and Picard as the Monarch of Cups. I don't have any information on the characters used for the other court cards.
The only minor arcana pip card I was able to get my hands on was Harry Mudd as the 4 of Pentacles.
If I ever get more information on this tarot, or what happened to the project, I'll probably post it on Lori's & my website.
-- Jeannette
