~~A Trippy Deck Path~~

All Is One  23 Jun 2002
I was just getting my feet slimy again on the forums,
when I found a great phrase in a post,

where Qolus referred to getting started "down the trippy decks Path"

I started to percolate...it could be such a good thing- to trip out and stop analysing any Tarot deck, layout, or idea for...say...three days.

(admit it- they need to invent a patch for some of us to help us
stop triple-playing each idea)

So- what are your "trippiest" decks, spreads, and experiences with them?

Oh, C'mon - you can trust Us- we are the ones who have weird in
every drawer. . . . and they say:

Confession is good for the Soul!

All is One: So, you're looking for "weird?" Here's a few you might want to check out:

Tarot de Acuario:
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=acuario
(The first 22 cards correspond to the "standard" majors, the rest don't have anything to do with a "traditional" tarot... but they're all definitely weird!)

Tarocco di Amerigo Folchi
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=tarocco+di+amerigo+folchi
(Check out the guy on the "Strength" card with a strawberry for a head!)

Cartomancie de l'An 2000
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=l'an+2000
(Futuristic, satirical, and somewhat cynical.)

Ansata Tarot
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=ansata
(Qualifies as "trippy," I would say.)

Tarocchi del Bestiario
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=bestiario
(Weird creatures.)

il Tarocco Bizzarro
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=bizzarro
(The name says it all.)

i Tarocchi del Buongustaio
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=buongustaio
(Tarot as seen through the eyes of a restaurant patron?)

Le Calzature Fantastiche (Fantastic Shoes Tarot)
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=calzature
(Fairly famous, but no less strange because of it.)

Tarocchi dei Celti (by Jacovitti)
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=tarocchi+dei+celti
(Very weird cartoons.)

The Cynic's Tarot
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=cynic
(Speaking of cynical...)

Energetic Tarot
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=energetic
(I'm still waiting for someone to explain this one to me...)

Le Tarot de Gruyeres
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=gruyeres
(Another one for which the term "trippy" definitely applies. And why is there a picture frame around the Fool's butt?)

Gummibear Tarot
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=gummibear
(Either the product of a demented mind, or someone with waaaay too much time on their hands.)

Heliodoro Tarot
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=heliodoro
(Again, definitely "trippy." Take a look at what's being held in the balances of Justice's scales.)

Phantasmagoric Theater Tarot
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=phantasmagoric
(Very cute, in a very weird sort of way.)

PoMo Tarot
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=pomo
(May be thought-provoking post-modernisn, but it's still weird.)

Tarot der Schatten (Tarot of Shadows)
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=schatten
(From a very small print run that we picked up in Germany; the artist has an "interesting" outlook on the dark side of human nature.)

Sternenmadchens Wahrsagespiel Tarot
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=sternenmadchens
(One of my favorite "funky," futuristic, pop-culture tarots!)

i Tarocchi nei Colori della Toscana
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=colori+della+toscana
(Amerigo Folchi mixes Marseilles imagery with famous landmarks of Tuscany and... wristwatches!)

The Uraniun
http://www.tarotgarden.com/database/dbsearchengine.php?view_title=uraniun
(Punch-out majors-only B&W collage tarot, included as a "bonus" with a special edition of a gay pornography magazine.)

So -- do any of these qualify?

~~whoof~~ I have had the wind knocked out of me by all this trippiness! Yes, that Energetic is certainly mysterious...

I don't yet own anything that might match the trip factor of, say, the Tarot of Fantastic Shoes. The main deck in this "genre" that I lust after, aside from the ever-elusive PoMo, is the Masonic (don't let the name fool you). Of the decks I own, maybe Navigators Tarot of the Mystic SEA is the most wild and woolly. I do own the Phantasmagoric Theater, and it is actually pretty usable, when I can allow myself to interpret the images less traditionally than I'm used to doing with other decks -- to let things jump out at me from the cards, etc. I got that deck as well as the Neuzeit from truthsayer, and I am still giddy about it (Psst! Thanks again, truth!!). The Neuzeit is right up there with some of the trippiest. It almost has a grotesqueness to it. There's so many I have yet to acquire... For somewhat embarrassing reasons, I cannot order things online at this point in my life, but once I am so enabled, look out world!

Hi, folks, per Jeannette's excellent suggestion I've split this thread and put the latter half of it in the Talking Tarot section, click here to go right to that thread.

Hello Jeanette- thanks for taking the time to post all those interesting decks; that was a lot of fun viewing!

I put in a request at Tarotgarden to find the Cynic's Tarot - I just loved it! My husband is the Great Cynic of SoFL and I think he would actually let me practise my tarot readings on him if I had such an apropos deck!

I was wondering if anyone had done any readings with/owns this deck?

Jeannette  26 Jun 2002
Hi, Molly!

The Cynic's Tarot is marvelously original and clever, but please be aware -- it was only ever published in book form.

Thanks for using our search service. I'm just coming off of two work-related back-to-back all-nighters, so I probably won't be able to get back to you with more specifics about your request for another 24 hours, but one thing you'll need to do is to let me know if you're still interested in a copy, given that no actual cards of these images have ever been printed.

I'm always happy to post more scans of the Cynic's, or any tarot, if there's card/image in particular you'd like to see.

Thank you so much Jeanette! I guess I wont need your search service (available at www.tarotgarden.com ;-) )! I was able to download it and read it on my computer - it is EXTREMELY interesting! I think I am going to make a little project out of printing it, gluing it to index cards, and laminating it. It will be good practise for the day when I start my own collage deck *G* I especially like the Lover's Card - now that is cynical!

Jeannette  26 Jun 2002
Molly: Okie-dokey. Have fun with the cards! (If you do do a reading with them, let us know how it turns out! It ought to be a real "trip" indeed!
