Gess what I got?!.........AMBER TAROT

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 19 Jun 2002, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Yep, I finally got it in a trade with someone from Canada with whom I've never traded before but this trade was a great one!

Amber tarot still in shrinkwrap with booklet. Ok, the pips are plain but the Majors and Court Cards, wow!

I am sooooooo happy I got it now!!!

Catlin:

Are you a fan of the Zelazny stories? If so, what's your reaction to the "feel" of the major arcana cards -- do you think they capture the "flavor" of the world of Amber? And how about the associations used for the court cards? Do you agree with the designer's selections?

Hi Jeannette,

The prob is that I've never read one of these stories. I just saw the cards at wicce and wanted the deck. When I looked the cards through, I got an odd feeling with some of the cards as if some persons might not be the suitable ones for the cards depicted but I cannot judge.

I hope I'll find the Zelazny stories somewhere.

B/W thanks for your help concerning this deck. What a pity I couldn't offer something to set up a trade. The Röhrig tarot was the same you already have in stock and until now I still haven't heard anything from the guy with the Czech decks.

aeonx  19 Jun 2002
Congrats taro-holic! Do you plan on reading with them? In that case, I'm interested to know how they are. This is a beatiful deck, and I really like the pictures and the coloring. For you who wonder, here's two links to view them: At Aeclectic At Wicce.

I especially like the World-card!

Congrats Catlin!!

It looks so beautiful! And you should deffinatly get a hold of the books because the amber series rocks!!

catlin  19 Jun 2002
Guess I won't do readings (even not for myself) with the Amber as this is a deck which will be hard to replace and I usually use replacement decks for my clients (guess how my 10 year old pocket RW looks like so you'll understand).

I think this is one which will rest in the book case and only be taken out now and then to admire it and to say to myself: "Hey, this is one I was looking for for about a year."

aeonx  19 Jun 2002
What a shame. :D I guess I have to get it for myself then anyway. :)

catlin  19 Jun 2002
Ok, I could not resist getting the complete Amber chronicles in one volume at amazon (hope you all appreciate how much I supported this month our beloved a.net as all my orders went via a.net amazon link :D

There I will have some +1000 pages to read in my holiday (what else should I do with 2 weeks non-aeclectic?!)

I must confess -- although both a fan of tarot and of F & SF, I have not yet read the Amber Chronicles either (*gasp!*). But it's on my "to do" list -- honest!
;)

The folks I've spoken with who've got the deck and have read the book have given me mixed reports on their feelings re: the assignment of the court cards. But what a fun exercise!

No apologies necessary. Although we had the good fortune to pick up several copies last year in France, the seller was someone who ("unfortunately" -- LOL!) knew how much they were worth to buyers on this side of the Atlantic. So I understand; we decided to go ahead with the purchase, because there was such a great demand for them, but I realize the price puts them well into the realm of "serious collector" status.

Enjoy your new Amber deck!

the amber series is probably my all time fav scifi/fantasy series. i've read other books by roger zelazny but nothing topped amber. there is a series about corwin and then one about merlin his son. does the complete amber you bought cover all of that? reviews i've read about amber says it's the weakest of zelazny's books but i disagree. it's not as complex as the book he write that won this big scifi award (i think it's called lord of light) but imho it's the most readable, imaginative, and entertaining. zelazny died of cancer in the mid-90's so unfortunately there will be no more stories by him. :( i think that's what increases the value of the deck for true amberites. i hope to eventually get a copy for myself. i know the characters and would be interested in who is what in the deck. $100+ is too rich for my blood tho. you had great luck to get a copy, catlin.

aeonx  20 Jun 2002
Oh. It costs $150. And it's OOP. :( *pout*

...No, actually, it's called the "Hugo" -- LOL!
:D

Seriously, though -- you're correct, truthsayer. Zelazny's Lord of Light won the Hugo award in 1968.

Ok, the reviews on the Amber Chronicles were mixrd at amazon.de but as I love SF/Fantasy and wanted to get a real good big book to read I just decided to give it a try.

Reviews stated the Corwin stories much better than Merlin, I think I'll see. I hope amazon hurries with delivering this book as there is still my "Adept" to come which was delayed twice now :( :(

I am glad I got my Amber in a trade :) :) :)

VGimlet  21 Jun 2002
Oooh, I am so jealous!!! :D This is a gorgeous deck.

I loved the Amber series, it was what began my interest in Tarot. Also highly sentimental for me, because my dad and I shared an interest in sci-fi, and read this series together as they came out. I still have his original paperbacks, slightly delicate now, but still readable. It's been awhile since I read the whole series, though, maybe it's time to dust them off again.

I've been wanting the deck ever since I found out about it, and I'm going to do some serious hinting about what a fine anniversary gift it would make. Although I won't hold my breath, LOL.

VGimlet:

Anniversary?! Well, that's an event that does merit a "special gift." Tellya what -- tell your husband to write Jeannette at Tarot Garden (jkr@tarotgarden.com), and I'll see if I can't make him an offer at a nice, juicy discount that he can't refuse, for the sake of his loving wife.
;)

So, which anniversary will it be for you two lovebirds?

I have been admiring and wanting this deck for over a year and half! ... Hey Jeannette ... any special offers that "one cannot refuse" for weddings? I am getting married soon, and I have a tendency to buy myself presents on special occassions *LOL* that might make me a good wedding gift to myself *LOL* .... he doesn't quite understand the true value of tarot or the depth of my addiction and I know him well enough that he would NEVER spend more than $32 for deck/book set (and he thinks that is expensive *LOL* ... if he only knew!)

You know Jeannette it is cruel to say the words "offer you cannot refuse" here when so many of us suffer such delicate addiction conditoins *LOL*.

Sorry, no sympathy here... (Just kidding - heh, heh }) ).
...After all, you don't think I've actually made any money through Tarot Garden over the last 16 months, do you? (Absolutely not kidding this time -- but not complaining, either. )

*LOL* ... Okies guess its time we go to e-mail or PM and play "lets make a deal" *ROFLMAO*. I'm ready! *LOL* ... you first *LOL* (FYI out of town away from puter Sat-Wed). ~Squeals with delight at the prospect of securing a copy of the Amber!~

To answer your question, no, I did not post anything about getting married before because it was not relevant to tarot ... now it is *LOL*.

~Giggles about the lack of sympathy thing~ You know someone could say you are the tarot equivalent of drug dealer ~giggle/snicker/snort~ ... You do know I mean that with humor and light heartedness, not meanness ... and by the way, well if you cannot make money through TG ~giggles not believing you~ then at least you can get a tax break by reporting your losses *LOL* ... Wish I could work for TG *LOL* ... I know I would be a dedicated hard worke. Some I am sure would call me a workaholic if my work dealt with Tarot decks *LOL*

Okie-dokey; I'll send a PM, but I gotta tell ya -- I really think that beau of yours ought to be doin' the buyin'. If he doesn't understand why, tell him to take a look at this:

http://www.tarotgarden.com/special/jsaces.jpg

and this:

http://www.tarotgarden.com/special/jkrmini.gif

The first one was my wedding present from my husband -- the four tarot aces, custom-rendered in stained glass, based on the Aces from Brian Williams' "Renaissance" Tarot. In the first house we lived in, there was a series of conjoining windows in the walk-out basement that were the perfect hanging place for these beauties. When we moved to our current home a few years later, there was no equivalent series of windows for hanging them together, so after they sat in a closet for a couple of years, Les (my hubby) commissioned the backlit cabinets (as shown in the pic) as an anniversary gift.

The second one is a portrait of me as the High Priestess, commissioned once again by Les, for our sixth wedding anniversary. The picture is greatly reduced (it's quite large), and was taken with my cruddy old digital camera. The portrait is actually much lovelier than my pic shows, although either way, it certainly flatters me a great deal (I should look so good in person -- *sigh*).

For the record, we'll have been married 14 years this coming August. For those of you who saw the movie Phenomenon with John Travolta, I'll say this: he really knows how to buy my chairs!
;)

Never forget -- most drug dealers are also drug addicts as well, if you get my drift...

Ah, you don't even want to get me started on that... this is supposed to be a thread on the Amber Tarot, not a rant... (although mind you, it wouldn't be the Aeclectic folks or the Tarot Garden customers I'd be ranting about...)

Wish I could laugh with you on that one. Unfortunately, I discovered at tax time, much to my chagrin, that it doesn't work that way in an inventory-based business. (Another rant, but once again, I'll spare you...)

It's our 20th on July 16. Most of the people attending gave us six months, maybe a year, and kept asking me if I was pregnant. It still makes me grin. (we were very young). :)

I'll let him know, Jeannette, he knows I really, really want that deck. Although he may already have plans (he's notorious for surprise trips...*Not* that I'm complaining about that, LOL).

Well, congratulations to both of you. While I'm generally a big advocate of loooooong engagements (my hubby & I dated for six years before we got married), I never argue with what works!
:)
Have a good one!

Jeannette, perhaps I should have asked if your husband had an avaialable brother before I said yes to my fiance *ROFLMAO* ... those pics you included are gorgeous ... how thoughtful of him.

You have e-mail regarding the Amber (in response to your e-mail to me). Ohhhhh and I am sorry to hear that govt. is not fair on taxes when it comes to invotory businesses ... that stinks! (laughing no more).

VGimlet congratulations!

Hmmm... thanks for letting me know. The system didn't notify me. I'll have to go check the PM mailbox after I get back from today's run to the post office.

Don't be sorry. It's irritating as heck, but when I'm feeling calm and semi-reasonable, I guess I can see the logic in it. In brief, Tarot Garden didn't make any cash-money last year, but because we ended up with more inventory than we started with, the IRS sees that as being a de facto profit. Ergo, it feels that taxes are due. I suppose that viewpoint is meant to close up some possible "tax loopholes," but unless the IRS is willing to take their tax payment in tarot decks, the net result in "real world" terms is a cash loss. But, live and learn -- most businesses don't make a "true" profit in their first year or two of existence, anyway.

I guess it's just a hazard of being so determined to stock about every tarot under the sun, huh? LOL!

(Not that it will ever happen, but there's nothing wrong with aiming high.)
