I have the deck, but to be honest I have not gotten around to using it. I have heard mixed reviews on it, some people really like it, others do not, some are neutral. I believe there is some card renaming, and the thing I loved about the deck was the pagan theme. Some of the cards are quite beautiful, others are so so (digital art style didn't work so well on some). The deck is a little larger than average and does not come with its own individual box. Although I have not used mine, I am glad I got it as its theme is what is secial to me. One of these days I'll get around to reading the book and using the deck a bit.

We had a long discussion about this deck--the problem isn't the mixed reviews (some like it, some don't), it's that it's a deck that a lot of folk are attracted to, but not all find they can use once they get it. It's a very "earthy" deck, and that seems to make the difference. What I mean by that is that it's a deck dominated by green fields, rolling hills, grain, forest clearings, woodland animals, standing stones. A lot of the minors feature famous celtic landmarks--like the running horse or the giant with the club on the side of a hill. I think folk that have trouble with it are those that find the solitary figures (I don't think that any of the cards have more than one figure featured in them), and very "earthy" imagry not active or energetic enough.

Put it another way--this is not a very intellectual or "fiery" deck. Also, as you can see, it's a deck which "frames" the images. You gaze out on a landscape, take in the scene. Some readers want to get into a card and be part of it--and this sedate, meditative, "oracle" feel puts them at a distance.

On the other hand, for those of us who love the deck, it can be very powerful. Like looking into a magic mirror. It offers you a vision of another world, another time--of wild magic and raw energies. Very poetic. Seems to work best for Earth and Water signs.

Book is excellent by the way, but yes, some of the cards are a little different. Most different is that the Magician and Hierophant seem to be switched in order. The "High Priest" or Hierophant is #1 the "Druid" or Magician is #5. I think there's some difference in the numbering higher up as well (14, 15, 16). So when reading the book you have to kind of work out what's what in some of the Majors.

I am very new to tarot, and have been binge buying with a vengeance. I have many decks at this point.
Sacred Circle was one of the first decks that I bought.
I've been giving at least one reading a week, since mid-april, and unless I beg to try another deck, EVERYONE has been drawn to that deck.
It gives wonderful readings.
And it teaches a lot about Celtic Paganism lore, history, and beliefs.
We have found that the story behind the card, (the legend, history, etc.) have a LOT to do with the interpretation. Many clear connections are made.
As I've been giving readings to people who've mostly never been read before, or have never been in much contact with tarot, (except for two friends who've been into it for years), maybe some of this has to do with 'beginners' luck' or some variation of it. Maybe because I and they, (the querants) are so open and new to it, is why it works so well. (Haven't had any 'bad' readings with any deck yet, come to think of it)
But, I still wonder, with so many decks to choose from, why does everyone pull to that one?
Anyway, we all love it.

Thanks soo very much guys for the info and the sites.
I really love the deck and i find i can get "right in the card" as umbrae had mentioned, but even if i find it hard to read with at first (as with having 1 deck only you are so familar with it alone) I think i would just love to have them in the house whether i looked at them or not.
I will go on the look out for them in a local bookstore (don't think I will have much luck, not a big place here) and i will let you know if i get the deck or not.

Thanks to you all very much
Helpful little bunch aren't you HA HA HA

Cheers

I got this deck because I loved the art work. The majors I like best, the pips don't have much explanation in the pictures but they are nice to look at if you like landscapes.
I really love to just look at the deck, but I have not used it for reading, it does not seem to be my deck for reading (although, maybe tomorrow I'll just get the feeling I should read with it - I just do as I feel in that respect.
If you love this deck don't let the renaming of a few cards discourage you, the deck comes with a proper book (I must confess I haven't read it all yet).
This deck is so different from other decks, if it appeals to you you should just buy it !
One drawback I found: it looks to me as if the people on the court cards are posing. But maybe that's just me ;)
Hope you'll be happy with this deck.

I consider the SC to be what I call a magick deck. I "think" that is at least partly why some or many want their readings on it. While it doesn't pull you inside it to begin with - you can "step in." Once you do - Wow! Everything comes alive. I believe there are instructions for stepping into the cards in the book (which I haven't read much of yet.) I find this deck anything but sedate myself. Perhaps it is sedate for some until they "step inside?" I love the magick mirror analogy.

Kazz.....

Magick = spells, elements, enchantments, enchanted tarot decks .... ;-)

Magic = illusions on tv like when they cut a girl in half or pop a rabbit out of a hat.

Some authors, following remarks first made, I seem to recall, by Crowley, have used the spelling of 'magick' instead of 'magic'. The sleigh-of-hand type of 'magic' on stage or on television isn't magic, but prestidigitation (literally, 'swift-fingered'). Personally, I prefer the non-germanic spelling, and have never added the 'k' to such an important term - as with many other terms, however, there remains various ways to spell various words, especially in this international community.

It is my fav personal reading deck I only use for myself, I never thought that I'd ever click with a computer generated deck but it works wonders! In fact, I get my best readings from decks I had a heap of prejudice against see my thread about the Cannon Reed Witches tarot.

I am an Earth type and Celtic Wicca maybe this is why this deck clicked with me.

cjtarot  18 Jun 2002
Kazz,

The Sacred Circle has been wonderful to me.....The only advise I have is read the book, get to know the symbols..then ignore the wording on the deck..let the pix do the work..the symbols..

I keep my deck in a plush purple velvet bag with a butterfly embossed on it. I never keep the box so the fact that it didn't come with one doesn't bother me.

Good reading

Thanks cj
it is nice to hear such positive things about the deck
I am in the proccess of trying to order one , thankyou for the advice on reading the book and yes i never keep the little boxes they come in i wrap them up in a silk scarf

cheers

It seems to be a beautiful deck, I will have to look for a demo deck and spend some time with it.

has anyone posted the whole deck on the web?

Kazz  18 Jun 2002
Hi Autumnmoonfire,
firstly, in the first page there are some web sites that show alot of the cards, but not all, and secondly, what do you mean by a "demo deck"????

Cheers

I really love this deck!! The only thing that bothers me is that the creato has switched the high priest and magician. They cal lthe Magician the Druid, and put him in the number for the high Priest. They claim that the Druid replaces the HP, and the HP for the Magician. But the meanings are the same. Hope this isn't too confusing.

PurpleGoddess  28 Jun 2002
i was naturally attracted to this deck because of druid history and markings. just ordered it this week and hope to get next week. i also got the arthurian legend deck again w/druid and lady of the lake imagery. i'm hoping that these images will help me get into the card and reveal it's meaning naturally not through books.

i know that last post was a while ago but i just found the thread about this deck.
