My newest deck is the gorgeous Tarot of the Master, being featured on Aeclectic this week. I'm not one to be attracted to historical Italian decks, but this one is special. The deck was created in 1893 by Giovanni Vacchetta. I'd never heard of him until now, but his art really is amzing. Lo Scarebeo has published his work splendidly. This deck looks as though it could have been discovered in Great Granny's attic. It is an ivory deck, colored in dusky pastels. To add to its authentic feel, it even has some mildew stains added! The overall effect is very romantic. The only thing I really dislike about this deck is the forest-green borders. It is not my favorite color, and for me detracts from the decx. I'm interested in the opinions of others who have acquired this deck. Are you as enchanted as I am? I know this deck deviates some from basic Rider-Waite meanings. Has anyone successfully read with this deck? Do tell.

Andryh:
Vacchetta's deck is definitely an incredibly beautiful example of classical Italian illustration. Originally published in black-and-white, there are at least two modern "colorized" editions (the "Tarot of the Master" being one of them).
Alexandria Genetti, creator of the "Wheel of Fortune" tarot, recommends the black-and-wite version as the perfect deck for hand-coloring. You can see samples from Ms. Genetti's own hand-colored copy here:

I'm aware of three post-1900 reprints of the Vacchetta: a black-and-white edition by il Solleone (publication year unknown -- sometime in the 1980s), and color editions by il Meneghello (2001) and Lo Scarabeo (as "Tarot of the Master," 2002).

If the borders on the Lo Scarabeo edition are not to your liking, you might prefer the il Meneghello edition. To see and compare all three editions, use this link:

It's wonderful to find yet another fan of this breathtaking historical masterpiece!

Jeanette -
Thanks for posting those links. What gorgeous illustrations. I think I prefer the hunter green bordered ones myself.

This deck is tucked away in the book shop for me. Although I am not so fond of Classical Italian decks I thought my Ancient Tarot of Lombardy needs a friend ;)
