just bought this one today, as part of a "fortune telling" kit (which just means they threw in a little book on palm reading). ditched the palmistry book... love the deck!

it's small but not tiny (purse size!), skillfully rendered, lighthearted, brightly colored, and gets straight to the point. most of the cards are r/w/s derived, but some of them shoot off in exciting new directions. some are a bit puzzling... the emperor card shows a fancy cowboy boot with a face on it. what's that about? *l* the beautiful art on the backs of the cards is one of the best features of this deck.

i have a thing for the innocent decks (hugobrian, tarot for cats, stick figure, etc), and tarot nova just tickles me pink.

Hi, emily two otters --

I like this deck too! I think it has a lot of flair and originality -- something different.

Click here to read a great review of this deck by Janet Selman.

I think the cowboy boot for the Emperor is supposed to simply be a symbol of masculinity, and perhaps to show that the Emperor succeeds by dominating, or, to carry it to an extreme, by keeping people "under his shoe."

I really like the look of this deck; wasn't it originally sold by itself, instead of just as part of that "fortunetelling kit?" If I can find it (cheaply) that way I'll get it... It's so simple but really very clever...

This was my first deck! It came as a "mini"-deck though, not in the kit you're talking about. By mini, I mean that each card was about as wide as my thumbnail. Not very practical for readings, but I used it quite a bit while trying to teach myself. I don't like the artwork myself, but I can understand why others do. Like you said, it's clear and to the point. I would probably still be using it, but I lost the three of pentacles....:( I actually feel really bad about that, and I've searched everywhere. So far no luck though.

Good luck with your own deck!

Smiles,
Houklani

Is this the deck which should have turned out a round deck but then the publisher refused because of the costs?

A friend of mine is very enthusiastic about the Nova deck (if this is the one you are talking about) but she could not tell me if it is the same you talk about.

Im going to be, at some point, as soon as i take care of my other tarot obligations, be buying the larger set from my mom for 5 bucks.I never really wanted it, but who can refuse a new deck for the collection for 5 bucks lol

i got the mini-tarot nova today as an early birthday gift.
i don't think i will cut up the cards though, i can still see the pictures in the little book that it came with.
so cute! and i like the art a lot. i definatly got the tarot nova (the regular size version) on my wishlist now.
so now i got two miniature decks - might as well get that key-chain rider-waite too while i am at it:)

This was my first deck, too! I went to a bookshop in search of a deck, knowing nothing about Tarot, but very interested in it. The only decks they had was the Nova and a nastily-done Marseilles version. The Nova won easily. I read around a bit and learned about traditional symbolism, decided to find a second deck that was more traditional...and another deck...and another...
Anyhow, this is still one of my favorite decks. I appreciate the unusual symbolism more now than when I started working with Tarot. I love the Fool riding on the cat and the Chariot's trick bicycle. This deck works very well for me in readings.

emily2: i love this deck!! The emperor always seems Russian to me. His boot just seems Russian. This wasn't my first deck, but the first one that was RW ish. It has really helped me. I frequently see these images when I'm doing a spread or thinking of a certain card. If I'm using a deck I don't often use and can't draw from it for some reason, up pops the TarotNova in my mind and I'm all good!

:THP Liliana: This deck DOES come larger? Yipppeeee!!!
Where can I get one? I love the little one, but I love it so much I want more of it!

Yay! I'm so glad others out here dig this deck. Does anyone have a favorite card? I love the 7 of cups!! and the 4!

:) napaea, :THP jr.

So you're saying it *does* come full-size by itself?

Lee  28 Jun 2002
The larger deck comes in a kit called "Fortune Telling", by Dennis Fairchild and Julie Paschkis, published by Running Press. The deck is about 3-1/2 by 3 inches. It comes with a large but thin booklet on reading tarot and a tiny hardcover book on palm reading.

Its the entire kits Ill be buying for 5 from my mom, the rest of the kit was hardly worth mentioning lol

drat... I don't really want the whole kit... Maybe someday I'll find the deck alone in a used bookstore for a few bucks. Also, maybe someday I'll find the PoMo in a used bookstore for a few bucks. Yeah, that's it! LOL

qolus --
the price for the kit is very reasonable when compared to other, unaccompanied, decks.

my mom got interested in palm reading lately, and i had told her that we should go into business together; she could do palms, and i could do cards. she said, "yeah but tarot is just superstitious nonsense." (she was kidding. ;) ) after i bought the tarot nova fortunetelling kit, i brought her the palmistry book and told her "here. you can have this, 'cause it's just superstitious nonsense."

Yes, it just seems wasteful since the palmistry book would go unused. I suppose it would make a decent for-the-heck-of-it gift to someone... Eventually, I will, of course, get the kit. :D

...Do you really have otters?

emily2otters  06 Jul 2002
did i say i have otters? :D

no, otter is a spirit guide for me. (and boy, do i feel silly saying a thing like that!) once when i was in a deep deep funk, i spotted a pair of them frisking and mating on the shore. it was awesomely beautiful, and the timing couldn't have been better. changed my life.

Hi
I`ve just got the Fortune Telling Kit - it arrived in the post from Amazon today. It was an impulse buy, I wanted a tarot deck which is small enough to carry round in my bag with me and this one certainly fits the bill. At first inspection I`m undecided about it, I do like the folk art style but i just don`t know. I think that my problem is that I really want the World Spirit deck and maybe wish I`d spent my cash on that instead. I`ll have to wait and see whether these cards grow on me and start saving my pennies again. Sorry to ramble on.

Brightest Blessings
