*Sigh* I've just been to visit the Mary-el tarot website.
I've been droooling over this deck for months ever since I saw the major arcana because the artwork is so amazing. From what I'd seen of the Majors and first few courts, it was going to be a gorgeously rendered RW derivative.
But I've just checked out the fives, and the artist seems to have taken an abrupt turn away from the traditional meanings of the cards - the 5s represent the 'stages of a persons life' instead of their more traditional meanings. :( I still love the majors and courts, but I'm so disappointed with the changed cards that I don't know if I'll be able to read with this deck.
I'm gutted ... this deck was going to be the one *sigh*
Here's the link to feast your eyes on anyway:

since you were so looking forward to this deck, try giving the fives a chance. the artist appears to have been thru a major transformation w/ becoming pregnant and that amongst other things her perspective to the work has changed. as an artist she can only do what her creative instinct and personal growth leads her to do. hopefully, the fives will grow on you in time but even then it's not hopeless. i never know whether or not i can use a deck by looking at scans. i have to hold it in my hands to see whether or not i could feel the "magic". maybe you won't really know until you have the complete deck in your hands.

Guess this is the issue in regards to a lot of decks: the art and conceptual ideas behind the creation of a new deck can absolutely feel right ... untill the creator takes a turn that no longer fits with our way of seeing things.
No biggy if you simply thought of that deck as an addition to a collection, but something completely different when you were "praying" that this deck would be the one to read with in the future.
I've had this happening a few times upon seeing the full deck for the first time - most recently with the Avalon Tarot (okay, graphically it's a far cry from what I'm used to reading with ... but then again, we're all full of opposites, right ?). This illustrates just how rare a really "fitting" deck is, especially when one considers just how many criteria we each use to select that special set of cards that feels right and fits our ideas, etc.
(PS: I looked at the fives, and felt the same - although I wasn't holding too many hopes about this deck myself)

I followed the link and see what you mean about the 5's. My personal favorite of the cards is the 9 of cups - I'd love that as a print for my walls.

i'm with starfish, the 9 of cups is phenomenal. what a gorgeous deck! but i can see what your saying about the cards sort of throwing you for a loop.
however, maybe the lwb will offer her view or take on the card, and perhaps it will make perfect sense to you when seen from her perspective. this is such an incredible deck, don't be discouraged yet!!!

Have you considered contacting the artist via e-mail and learning more about the inspiration and thought that was put into the 5's? I have found that dialog with creators can be very enriching and add more dimensions to my tarot knowledge. Don't give up on the deck yet :)

i actually think its wonderful how she deviated from "tarot norms" and relied on personal reflection and inspiration to guide her in the creation of the fives.

Right, not everything needs to be a clone of everything else. Getting fresh air into it can probably help wonders when other decks get 'stuck'.
She's making sense with her cards, just drawing from different sources to incorporate more in. Other artists have done that too, pulling from runes, the Quaballa, etc. If it works, it works. She says there's going to be a book she'll write for it too, explaining all the cards.

dear goddess, these are fantastic cards!
i agree that departing from tradition can refresh the whole system. i don't like the osho zen as a whole, but for this and many other reasons i'm glad it was created. i hope maria plans to include a detailed commentary on the art/symbolism with the deck, so we can better learn how to read with it.
