Decks you traded/sold/gave away/buried and NEVER want back!!!

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 30 Aug 2002, and now archived in the Forum Library.

This thread is a direct result of re-reading a thread started by Divinerguy last year called OH NO NOT THAT DECK! that has resurfaced again ~giggles~ ... funny thread! ... So in keeping with that lively thread what decks have you traded, sold, given away, buried, burned, drowned, used for cat box lining, etc ... Mine are:

1) Bosch - just the thought of those objects protruding out of or stuck into body orifices just makes me shiver.

2) Tarot of Wicca - something sinister about their faces ...

3) Victoria Regina - I just could not deal with the black & white and the guns suit. Just did not work for me. I opened the box, looked through the cards, and then sent it directly to Truthsayer who loves it *LOL*.

4) Gendron - traded it once, forgot why and traded to get it back ... got it, opened it, remembered why I traded it the first time and traded it again. Something about the difference between the majors and the minors just rubs me the wrong way.

I think that about covers the ones I had the strongest reactions to ... if I remember any more I will post them. So what about you?

Starfish  30 Aug 2002
The Witches Tarot - . It hated me - :TDEV was it's favorite card to turn up each time I tried to use it.

It now has a better, more receptive home.

And Jewel, I love the updated tag line - however, Tarot Siren needs to be edited to read "[/color] Tarot Siren" })

The Ellen Cannon Reed or the James Bond one?

~points to signature tag~ is that better?

Ellen Cannon Reed one. ;)

And yes, the signature line now tells it like it is! :D Mermaids make the BEST Sirens...

Enochian Tarot. Freaked me out. Kept it for ages and looked at it once in a while. Finally traded it to ravenswing and I hope he likes it. Supposed to put you into direct contact with angels. I could not say how that might be.

truthsayer  30 Aug 2002
i dislike both tarot of the witches and the witches tarot. haven't wanted either back. the sacred rose--definitely no.

Maan  30 Aug 2002
Connoly...to cute and pink for me...:(
That while my main deck for three years was the hanson Roberts
But he there is cute and there is CUTE ;)

Fiona Blackwolf  30 Aug 2002
The Inner Child Deck. I bought it thinking how lovely the pics looked on the box and how nice a fairy tale taort would be. But from the minute I opened it the thing was screaming to get away from me. I couldnt even look at the box. So it got put away until I traded it to the lovely Starfish for...*drum roll* The Witches Tarot !

Our trade was meant to be :D The Inner Child and I get along famously!

RedWood  30 Aug 2002
Thoth...Gareth knight...Are the ones I never want back!!

Rhiannon  30 Aug 2002
Witches Tarot, Ellen Cannon Reed. It gave me headaches even after I smudged it.

Spiral. The art doesn't work for me.

And I recently bought the Enchanted Tarot as a gift for someone... looked through it and I can say I'm glad I didn't buy it for myself or it would be out the door anyway!

R :)

dolphingirl  31 Aug 2002
wow never wanting a tarot deck :) my mind boggels at the concept lol . I did trade my Morgan Greer away which was one of the first deck I ever got ( to many yellows and had kind of a graying cast not to bright and) now I wish I hadn't. I even want the Royal deck which I have heard so much about. (sigh some day :) )

The only other deck that I have given alot of thought to getting rid of is the Cosmic Tribe opened it looked at the cards went (YIKES) and put it back. I am hoping there will be a time when I can look at it without a shudder.

Dolphingirl :)

jema  31 Aug 2002
tarot of a moongarden. i was so glad someone wanted to trade that one away from me.
can't remember now who got it. must have been kiama or catlin:)

kayne  31 Aug 2002
My only two trades so far:

GreenWood: I bought it because Kiama made me... :P ("It's out of print now - you HAVE to get it!!!") The Majors just didn't work for me at all, so many Northern Hemisphere animals I had bearly heard of before, let alone be able to relate to... and the Majors and Minors are so different...

I just posted the Merlin Tarot off to Cricket (should arrive soon Cricket :)) and even though it was my first ever deck, I never, ever liked it at all. The Majors are pretty good, despite the non-standard numbering but the Minors are *terrible* No thought has gone into them at all... This deck has just been reprinted and seems to be available in every book store I go past now... Don't know why they reprinted it... The book with it was good though.

Summerdream  31 Aug 2002
For me it was The New Golden Dawn Tarot, Dreamcards, IIJ Swiss but the top place winner of I never ever want it back is Celtic Tarot by Lo Scarabeo!

Lee  31 Aug 2002
I agree with kayne, I had bought the Greenwood off the shelf in a bookstore, didn't like it, traded it away. The skeletons with dried flesh hanging off them didn't do anything for me.

Strega  31 Aug 2002
Tarot of the Witches (James Bond)... I just had to give it away.

Kiama  01 Sep 2002
Art Nouveau by the guy who ISN'T Matt Myers!

Traded it to Jema: It ws my first ever trade... Got hooked.

Kiama

Marion  01 Sep 2002
Kiama, no kidding... I cannot imagine you voluntarily giving up *any* deck. :D

catlin  02 Sep 2002
Hi Jema, you traded the Moongarden to me and I have to say I like it. We work well together.

If there should ever someone want to get rid of a Greenwood deck, pl let me know, there is still room for another copy of it in my book case LOL.

My worst case was the LOScarabeo Celtic Tarot: too much bloodshed in comic style. I was so glad jema wanted it (I have asked her twice if she's serious to get that one).

WolfSpirit  02 Sep 2002
The Fantastical tarot. i traded it to Kaz who said she liked it.
Some cards were ok, but I didnot like the faces: white, hollow cheeks, angry looking *shivers*

Kaz  02 Sep 2002
i still like it :-)
its a funny deck with funny art and it reads great. all my collegues i tried it on love it :-)

kaz

WolfSpirit  02 Sep 2002
I'm glad the deck went to someone who appreciates it. I did find the artwork special and pretty colours too, but not for me. I did not see the funny thing in it.
I hope I will see the funny artwork in the halloween deck when I get it :D

Dolphingirl, if Kayne or I can help you relating to this deck let us know! We both use it as a primary deck and LOVE it! ... definetly not a deck for everyone, but if you give it a chance it might really surprise you. The book is quite good and provides some insight into the imagery without being dogmatic. The book also goes into the primary design elements of the deck which is also helpful in understading the use nudity, the cosmic eyes and technology used. If I can be of any help at all just PM me!

kayne  03 Sep 2002
DolphinGirl: I second what Jewel just said! Cosmic Tribe so *so* worth giving a go... :D

Molly  03 Sep 2002
The Gill Tarot - it got under my skin so much it annoyed me to be sitting in my box. Got Diamond tarot for it in trade here at aeclectic - don't remember who I traded with??? LOVE the Diamond! *G*

Jema, Starfish, Keslynn, Maan... come on girls, show everyone what we learnt... ;)
And you, Starfish, my dear pupil: show the Forums all I taught you! ;)

Molly, was it for the artwork? I don't understand why you didn't like it - I am NOT trying to convert you, nor won't...
(There's Starfish for that *LOL* }))

Molly  04 Sep 2002
Pollux: LoL! I .... can't ..... say.....
I just.... hmmm...... well.....
Ha ha ha

Seriously, as I look at other decks I own and try to decipher how I feel about them... I think that I dislike decks where the cards look too much alike - or where the movement seems too still and frozen in time. With the Gill, I think I found the staring eyes a little creepy after a while. I loved the court cards but .... just couldn't *uncreepify* myself. Don't know if that makes any sense. I have the Tarot of the Trance and I want to trade it away for similar reason - all the cards look too much alike. I guess in something as complex as the tarot, I like it to reflect the complexities and movement of life. Also, weird things can get under your skin about a deck - and then it becomes an obsessive compulsive thing where you just can't shake that thought - that tick - that annoyance - and it just ruins the whole deck for you...

or maybe that's just me - LOL!

*ROFLMAO* I was wondering how long it would take you to come to the defense of the Gill ~chuckles~. Just remember hon, not every deck is for everyone :) (not even the Gill! *LOL*)

jema  04 Sep 2002
however much i love the Gill i am well aware that it is not a deck for everybody. the minors are very unconventional, the people in the majors look a bit odd perhaps.

i have yet to see or hear of a deck that everyone loves without reserve.
i remember when i was new to the forum i could almost take offense if someone was "mean" to one of my darling decks;)
but by now i know that for every deck in my collection there is someone here who loves it - and someone who most likely hates it too.

(i still almost can't get over that someone here didn't like the spiral though)

but when taking all into account i am quite pleased that this is the case - after all - it everyone loved all decks i wouldn't have anyone to trade with and that would be boring!

Pollux  04 Sep 2002
Jewel: no defense from me.. I just called the GILLY DEFENSE GIRLIES *LOL*

I *right now* *in this period* UNCONDITIONALLY LOVE the Spiral and the Aquarian (especially my new vintage - TP :*). I'll have to set up a threesome though, can't tur away from either...

As for the question... so far I never got a deck I didn't like. But probably I would never trade/sell/give away/bury any deck. I am a fundamentalist type... *LOL*

So let me see if I have this straight ... you got everyone all riled up about the Gill and then just turned away from it? *LOL* ... You fickle boy!

About not being able to part with a deck ever ... never say never my friend. I thought that once upon a time and have since traded, sold and given away decks.

Molly  04 Sep 2002
LOL... I have another controversial deck dislike I didn't want to mention. I know it is well-beloved and I feel quite guilty for not liking it - but I CAN'T HELP IT!!! I just don't like it. I feel very nitpicky and silly about the whole thing but I can't change my mind about it... okay, here goes. It's the ... um... Ancestral Path. I apologize - I do - I do - I know. First, the Gill and now that one. I'll go hang my head in the corner right now. But damn it, I'm taking my Blue Rose with me. I'll *NEVER* part with that one! hmm... maybe I've been roped into managomy and didn't even realize it. Hey! Is that how guys feel???? ::giggle::

ACK! Molly, the word burns the ears of a Tarot Siren! We just can't stay true to any one deck... })

I am too young and unexperienenced a tarotholic...
I am a weird type of Tarotholic too - a good slice of my decks were gotten out of un/conscious weaseling... *LOL*

I certainly rule nothing out in my ever tarot-holic growth.

In truth, I will give up MY VERY OWN LEGENDARY GILL deck to Liliana, for HER VERY OWN LEGENDARY ROHRIG.
The day we'll trade, I believe there will be a universal balance crisis, the forces of the cosmos will sway and tilt, the planets will start revolting out of their orbs, the Sun will get white and then green ad then purple, the stars will blink harder, the Moon will get Red... it will be Armageddon... *ROFLOL*
I do cos I have another one though, a far better one I think... (;))
(Ace of Wands in my sleeve)

Liliana  04 Sep 2002
And I have a far better Rohrig ;)

molly, don't feel ashamed, please! you aren't alone! please don't apologize! i was staying quiet but now that they've got you in a corner, i must come forward. i don't like the gill or the ancestral path either. i had both and traded them both and don't plan to trade back for them. they're just not my type. can't help it. ;) come out of that corner!

now i'm not a tarot fundamentalist like pollux. i'm more more of a tarot unitarian universalist. i can deal w/ fundamentalist decks but i'm open to all others. i'm also not ashamed to get a deck back if i trade it by mistake and have done so more times than i care to admit. :D
