Question: Doubles and Triples?

Hi,

Have any of you ever loved a deck SO MUCH that you bought more than one? It seems that I want to have a spare or two "just in case".....anyone else? I think this is more an "obsession" than just an addiction......:). Would love to hear from anyone else out there sharing the same problem...Also, what deck was it?

jade  11 Aug 2002
no, but i can totally see myself doing that. i'm a horder. i have a pantry full of food and i used to have over 100 rolls of tp in the house.

so yup, i could see myself doing that.

and if i did, it would be my voyager deck for sure.

in light,
jade :D

wavebreaker  12 Aug 2002
I haven't done that... yet :D. I do tend to do it with shopping, buying too much of everything just to have some extra stock.
When I take a trip, I take the deck that is easiest to replace, in case I should lose it. And when I'm travelling by plane, I will put it in my carry-on luggage, in case my suit case gets lost.

If I would buy an extra, it would probably be the Osho Zen. The only reason why I don't is probably because of the costs... :D

Please don't put the idea into my head to by double decks !
The reason I don't do it is because there are still so many other decks out there I want (need !!) so I don't have money left for replacements.
I'd like a double for the greenwood and the tarot for cats, both oop and very dear to me.

I have 2 Universal Waite decks...
I use one for readings
The other I use for meditation and tarot spells (I keep this one in original order with no shuffling)

I've got a few of decks where I keep multiple editions in my collection, because the editions vary from one another enough to make for interesting compare-and-contrast pieces.

One type of deck where I haven't yet purchased duplicates, but eventually will (when I have time) is some of the lovelier black-and-white decks. I'd like to have one for hand-coloring, and another for my collection that remains untouched for the "purist" in me...

Ok, I have 2 Greenwood decks, 2 Egorov , 2 Legend , 2 Crowley and 2 RW (one for readings, the other one for the collection).

SCARY!!! *LOL*

I will probably soon get another Aquarian (thanks to a silent angel of this boards :* :* :*). I think my love for this deck is obvious! The editions DO vary a bit though... I don't think I would get Doubles on Triples of the same edition anyway. Probably one will just be for myself (the one I get), and the one I have already will be FINALLY to read for other people than myself... :)

Getting doubles for B&W decks does make sense. I have been thinking about getting a B.O.T.A. for a while - all because of 78DW and the Temperance card... ;) But probably not two B.OT.A. decks - I would colour it very carefully and slowly, so as not to regret any choice I made.

AND, I also have two Gill decks. One is a normal version, the other is the much more appealing Ravenswing Enhanced (R) - a one exemplary edition, I am the only one in the world having one, and it runs the latest reading software and plug ins... ;)
Anyway, the normal Gill is blocked for trading Liliana's ROHRIG (what a honour) - I bet you all are sic of this story... *LOL*

catlin  12 Aug 2002
Hi, I forgot to mention the Giant Haindl + Standard Haindl. The former is for study purpose, the latter for readings.

Lee  12 Aug 2002
I am ashamed to say I have done this... ashamed because it really doesn't make sense for me, since based on past history, I will never stick with a "favorite deck" long enough to wear it out! :)

I have two of:

Morgan-Greer (one I picked up in a used bookstore for cheap)

Mythic (dumb move on my part as they then came out with a new edition with superior card stock)

Prediction

Light and Shadow (but I colored one card of one of them [badly], so I don't know if this counts)

Artists Inner Vision (bought an extra one 'cause I thought it might be valuable someday, but doesn't look like it will be at this point)

Voyager (bought the recent edition so I could read the revised handbook, for review purposes)

Aquarian (but one is the original Morgan Press version, which I bought new when it was in print, believe it or not! Am I that old?)

~blushes~ Okies I am busted *LOL*. Lets see ... oh yes, I have 2 Robin Woods, 2 Cosmic Tribes, and two Thoth decks (1 large, 1 small).

JUSTIFICATION (*LOL*):
The second Robin was acquired because the original was in storage ... I could not get to it ... missed it terribly, had to get another one because it was my primary deck at the time and I needed it. Will I ever part with the second copy? probably not *LOL*.

The second Cosmic Tribe was sent to me by the publisher as they did not replace single cards. So I actually did not pay for this second deck. Will I part with it? NEVER!! The CT is my primary deck and the card stock is not very good quality (in my opinion) so I am sure one day I will wear out the one I am using. If not, then I have a nice crisp collector piece :)

As for the Thoth these I have for study purposes. The small version has 3 magi and the large edition has one magus and the hexagram card (can't remember the formal name of the hexagram). The large version is great for seeing the detail on the cards while studying, the small version is great for practical application. So to me these are not exactly the "same" deck.

*drools all over the keyboard...*

I beat out all of you :), I love the VR so much, I bought 3 decks. First deck I could read intuitively. Had about 30 or so previously, none worked for me, so I thought I better "stock up". You never know when a nuclear war will break out and destroy all the bookstores and close down the internet! Just joking.

I am new to this forum and love reading the tarot. I also love art and enjoy talking about and viewing decks. I am sure I will enjoy it here!

Welcome, Michele! :)

Oh, thanks, Jewel, I had forgotten -- I have the large green Thoth (yuck), which my mom had given to me before I was much into Tarot. Then later on, when I was really into Tarot, I bought the large Swiss Thoth, and a small Thoth for reading with. Unfortunately neither had the two extra Magician cards, although they said they did on the box. So I'm still Extra-Magician-less. :(

Hey Pollux, don't drool too much, I don't think there's much of a difference between the Morgan Aquarian and the USGames Aquarian. The Morgan has rounder corners and the card stock is maybe a tiny bit thicker, but other than that they look the same.

Ahhhhhhhhhh! that stinks! have you tried contacting the publisher and letting them know that the box said it had 3 Magi and you only got 1? if not please try it, seems like the publishers are actually really nice about replacing cards (or whole decks). ~Whipers~ ... when did you say your b-day was? ;)

VGimlet  12 Aug 2002
I have two RWS decks - the Universal and the original, and I may get a Diamond also...just because.

I also have two Rock & Roll decks, a first edition that is my collector deck, and a second edition that I read with. (And if there is a third edition, I would probably get that too...LOL)

I am also keeping an eye out for another Aquarian deck. Like Lee, I have one of the original Morgan Press decks that was new when I got it (we must have been practically babies, he he!) but I'd like one of the newer editions...or maybe another original edition if I can find one in good condition.

wavebreaker  12 Aug 2002
I just remembered: I have two Rider-Waites, one regular size that I use at home and one miniature size that I keep in my bag... ;)

Umbrae  12 Aug 2002
I usually buy two identical decks at a time. That way if disaster strikes, I have a back up.
...as you know, disaster can strike.

Now who's being virgonian? :D

Tarot_Cupcake  12 Aug 2002
Umbrae, we share the same train of thought :) I also worry about the deck I love also going out of print.....never to be gotten again for any price :) I feel like if this is the only deck I can relate to and that relates to me, then I must be sure it will be there always. I think I am definitely suffering from OCD :).

truthsayer  13 Aug 2002
right now i have a large thoth and a small thoth. i love my neferteri so much that i bought its less flamboyant twin, the sphynx. believe me, if this baby wasn't so expensive i'd buy another deck. the problem is my cats love neferteri, too and they aren't as careful as i am... i had 2 VRT's--long story--but traded one of them recently. if i find another hanson roberts, i'll probably get it. i want one for the car and one for the house. you know, for emergencies. ;)

jewel, should i count all the decks i got back twice b/c i missed them or is this doubles in your collection at the same time only? ;) LOL

Lee  13 Aug 2002
At this point the thread turned to a different topic, so I've moved those posts to a new thread, "Why do some decks speak to you and others don't."

-- Lee :)

raeanne  13 Aug 2002
Are you talking about doubles and triples that you bought on purpose to have a backup deck or ones that you got because you got carried away and forgot you had that deck already. (Yes, I’m getting old and the memory slips sometimes so I'm guilty of both.)

Kiama  14 Aug 2002
The only deck I have two of is the Arcus Arcanum... Not cuz I'm silly and forgot I had it (How can I ever forget which decks I already have??!!! With e, I can walk into a shop full of decks, and it sounds just like a kids playground in th emiddl of trading card frenzy... 'Got... Got... Got... Need... Got... Being traded.. Got.... Gonna buy immediately...') I got two of it because a friend of mine knows a shop local to him which is still selling this OOPdeck, so I thought I'd get another so I could wait a whil, bide my time, then sell it for loadsa money when it's price is really high!

Let's just hope AG Muller don't re-release it before I get to sell it!

I ave often toyed swith the idea of getting the Mini-Motherpeace and Mini-Thoth, aswell as a Mini-RW... I got a mini-Universal Waite to go with my normal Universa Waite, so I might aswell get the other mini ones.... })

I have two Robin Wood decks, but only because I couldn't FIND my first one & needed to do readings with it. Turned out ok though, the other turned up & I've used the spare for showing people a tarot deck & let them handle it & do sample readings with it. This way MY cards stay clean & unbent (though the new deck still looks new....hmm).

catlin  19 Aug 2002
Hi Kiama,

Don't forget to get a Mini-Marseilles, without that your Mini-collection won't be complete.

In my case it is the same time only *LOL*. Still have them all. If we count the ones we have traded back then I would have to add the Gendron and Crows Magic ... which I traded again *LOL*.
