Could someone give me more information about this deck? Since I am in the Marseilles study group, I am more interested in this type of deck.

I do not know which version of the Marseilles is published by Mortagne. Would it be possible to provide either links, or post either the 2 of Coins or the VII - Chariot card.
I too would really like to know more about this intriguing deck!

Obviously a reproduction I need to have!
One aspect of the deck I can't make historical sense of, however, is the dating on the two of Coins: it shows 1996 as obviously the re-colouration by the modern artist, but it also gives the earlier date of 1181. Normally, the earlier date signals the date of the design from which the current publisher is either utilising the deck, or the publisher's earliest publication, which may not have been Tarot. If it is the latter, I find this a bit of a pity, as it may lead to false impressions. If the former, they must have access to a deck which every historian would dearly like further details!
Again, thanks for the link. It looks like a fine standard Marseilles type deck - judging from only four cards!

Hi jmd,
That's just what I thought. I have e-mailed to Mr Somerville to get some more information but as he is out of office until next week I suppose I Won't get a reply so early.

Hi Diana,
Thanks to you and jmd for providing us with the letter.
Hmm, I have to admit that the theory of Mr Hadar would second the theory of the Oriental origin of tarot (naibes) and their way through the crusaides back to the Region d'Oc and from there spreading throughout Europe. This would also fit in the decret of 1356 in which a monk states that playing card games was forbidden (although he does not mention tarot per se, so we don't know what card game he is referring to).
Personally I am still torn between settling the origines of tarot either in the Arabe world or to Ancient China.
