Becoming a tarotholic!!

Okay... I'm pretty sure I've taken an irreversable step towards a serious case of tarotholism... I now own 4 (count 'em - four!!) Tarot decks! AAAAIIIIIGGGHHHH!!!! Yesterday I stopped at my local used-book store, picked up a book I'd been wanting to get (non-Tarot related... hmmm... maybe I'm not too far gone yet). While there, something else caught my eye... The Unicorn Tarot! Well... since it was only $6 (U.S.) I just could not pass it up. I mean, who can pass up a deck chock full of unicorns?? Well... I couldn't anway.

At first I wasn't too certain about this deck and thought I could use it for trade if nothing else. But after looking through the cards some tonight, while I was at work (thankfully it was a slow night... ;) ) it is growing on me more and more. The art is somewhat simplistic, rather reminiscent of some of the old american folk artists.

Most of the imagery seems to be somewhat based in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck's images. However, over all the deck seems more lighthearted and contains less dark images. A noteable example is the 5 of Pentacles. In the RWS deck we see the 2 destitute people outside of the church in the snow. In The Unicorn Tarot we se a woman standing at an easle, painting a portrait of a nearby unicorn. Interestingly, the LWB says the divinitory meaning of the 5 of Pentacles is "financial struggle or frustration. Possible psychosomatic or genuine illness." This seems more in line with the RWS image than The Unicorn Tarot.

The Tower still shows the major upheaval we expect and the 10 of Swords still shows a guy with swords in his back (though with someone standing over him). So the deck isn't all strawberries and cream. It appears to me that it is going to be a very useable deck.

Anyway... I'm afraid that you people have been a very bad influence on me... Now I want to buy even more Tarot decks... })

This is the sentence that gives you away completely! *LOL* Welcome aboard Trogon! :D *LOL*
Anyway I am not so high on the hierarchy to welcome you on behalf of us all - just wait for Kiama, Catlin, Jewel, Truthsayer, Qolus or Faunabay! *LOL*

Oh really? *LOL* :D
Anyway, I am a different type of tarotholic: I hardly buy decks - I just get them as gifts! *LOL*
And I NEVER ask myself, I am only, very often, offered... *LOL*

Jewel  30 Oct 2002
~giggles @ Pollux~ .... Hey Pollux I think you qualify just fine to welcome new members to the taroholic club. You are just as good of an influence as the rest of us! (or worse *LOL*).

$6 for the Unicorn Tarot? that is a bargain!!! where did you get it? And please do not feel bad, being a taroholic is not a bad thing ... you just go hungry on occassion ;)

Alissa  30 Oct 2002
For 5 years I have always thought it kind of silly to have multiple decks -- what was the point, I used to think.

Now, since coming here in August, I already have a second deck (Legend Arthur) and I have a yet-unsused gift certificate to the local mystical arts bookstore, where I am seriously considering buying another deck....

This is mostly Demonesse's fault I think, since she and I have chatted and now I want the Gendron, too. And Faeries. And whimsical. And Hanson Roberts.

I could go on... see? I think I am fast on my way to full blown }) tarotholism~!

I'm so glad for you and your bargain Trogon, that is too cool! Have you done a new deck spread yet?

Namaste woo hooooo

Rhiannon  30 Oct 2002
It's inevitable. As soon as you start searching through all the deck reviews available here and elsewhere, start lurking and reading about all the fun we're having... and then once you register it's all over. *shakes head in sympathy*

R :)

anjocoxo  30 Oct 2002
yep, old boy, you've dunnit this time... 4 decks and counting... you can still escape... but who wants to escape from those magnificent decks we see, calling for us, begging for us to take them home?? and now, you've join aeclectic.... prepare your purse, because this is just the begining :P

PS- don't worry about being a tarotholic, we are already starting to have tarotgollums...

Trogon  02 Nov 2002
:D Laughing out loud...

Thanks for all your sympathy and understanding. As for where I got the great deal... it was at a store called "Bookman's". They specialize in used books and book-related things. It is a chain of stores in Arizona (3 in Tucson, 1 in Mesa and 1 in Flagstaff) and they frequently have some spectacular deals like this.

Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to do my new deck reading with my Unicorn Tarot yet. (Alas - the rest of the world has been intruding on my Tarot-life.) But will this weekend I hope. Will post it in the readings section when I do. :)

tarotbrat  02 Nov 2002
I really do believe that! I was also standing in line at Barnes and Nobles yesterday waiting to pay for son's kindergarten books and thought "Wow I made it without buying a tarot book or deck!" after being in the tarot section for about an hour thumbing through the books and looking at the decks that were on display. Well strategically placed was the carousel with the "Mega Minis" a box simply titled "Tarot" stood out and of course I picked up the sample box and looked through the cards and saw how simple and small the deck was and of course it was included as one of the items I was going to purchase. I thought to myself as I was driving home. "Oh my gosh! I just bought a deck and I don't even know how to read cards very well! I already have 4 other decks at home!" but something inside me said "you must buuuuyyyy!" Enjoy your new deck, I am pretty sure that I will enjoy mine. Looks like you can add my name to the list of tarotholics because I am sure this last purchase is not going to be my last. lol....

Violet Gargoyle  02 Nov 2002
Your true sign of tarotholicism will be when you start making math equations in terms of deck costs, like "That case of pop is as much as a tarot deck" or "I could have had 2 tarot decks for the price of that sweater"......

Well, Alissa, I have all of those decks. I think you shoud most definitely get them. })

I haven't done a reading with my Gendron yet, but the others have been just fabulous to work with (especially the Faeries...:) ). The Gendron was one that I didn't have on my wish list, but when I heard people talk about it and then finally held it in my hands...my mind was changed. I'm looking forward to getting to know it better.

Uh oh! I was there a long time ago. I've reached the point to where I say..."Nah, I don't really need that sweater; I'm gonna go check out some tarot decks!" and "Who needs pop when I can drink water...now where's that tarot deck I've been wanting?"

Welllll I DID go buy the Faeries! (The Faeries are coming! The Faeries are coming!) I'm waiting for the store to receive the deck ... AND ... they have set aside a copy of Pollack's "Forest..." for me now TOO!!! LOL :D I couldn't help myself! I've still been reading 78 degrees..., but had to have this one too.

So many books to read, so many decks to read, so litttle time!

Joywalker  03 Nov 2002
Is there any cure for this??? ;)

Maybe someone should set up a TA (Tarotholic Anonymous)! *grin*

Hey Alissa,I agree with you about "so little time,so many decks" but I have to add one more thing:so little money too! :D

With only so little allowance,I could only get 1 deck at a time.Should I get this first or that? Such a tough decision for a Libran!!

Oh! did I mention about the other addiction? :D The addiction to this forum!! I need to come here everyday for my daily 'fix'!!! >:)

anjocoxo  04 Nov 2002
On friday I went for a walk to a shopping here in lisbon, and I had already decided I wanted to buy Haindl... but when i got there I also saw the Goddess.... hum, major indecision... I didn't bring both because i don't have that much money, but there was a real struggle in me (come to think of it, if i had to decide between goddess and sacre circle, i would keep both - and probably starve this month)... but I already have in mind which one i'm going to buy next month... eh,eh,eh... more, more, MORE, MORE *hysterical laughter*

Geee, I definately have to go to a session of the TA!!!! :P

Mh... *puts on his historian glasses* 8)
That is not an original idea, there used to be a group of Tarotholic Anonymous, and famously it was right here n these baords. Soon after the foundation of it, it was discovered that it did not fulfil its purpose... The tarot-holics only degenerated.... *LOL* And the best thing about it is that they did only because they didn't want to be cured. And maybe still don't, I reckon...
The true question is... do we/they want to be cured?

The answer is within you. But not that deep! *LOL* })

In conclusion, I am not sure we NEED a session of TA. At least, not for theraupetic purposes... *LOL*

P.S. Wait till truthsayer, Jewel, or any other of the Major tarotholics sees this, it will be armageddon... *LOL*

P.P.S. http://www.tarotforum.net/showthrea...=&threadid=2712 ROFLMAO

OH Dear!!

What have I done!!?? :O

Have I just started something that I shouldn't??

*Hides under the bed.......*

Pollux  04 Nov 2002
No, you only unleashed the tarot-holic Queens! ;) *LOL*
I hope that they'll keep those hilarious thread going now... *fingers crossed* :D

~Steps up~ Pollux is quite correct and our organization still exists :) ... our main priority is to encourage individuals to purchase more decks, seek rare OOP decks, help each other find decks, books and anything else tarot related. We also help ease guilt feelings that can emerge in the early stages of taroholism so that they can be effectively overcome and you can buy more decks without remorse. Your preception of things will quantify the cost of things in terms of "how many tarot decks" they are worth, and often times this process alone will lead you directly to amazon.com. Some of our hardcore members include Truthsayer, Faunabay, Kiama, Caitlin and myself to name a few (no offense to those I left out but this post would get rather extensive if we were all listed).

The organization appears to be in a strong evoluntion process and we are now entering the Tarot Gollum phase which you can read about in the "Talking Tarot" forum.

We are in "session" year round and worldwide, however as we are very proud of our addiction I doubt you will find anyone that encourages you to stop ... as a matter of fact we recognize the word stop as a four letter word that should not be associated with Tarot in any way. I look to my sisters and brothers to fill in anything I might have left out.

Keslynn  04 Nov 2002
Yeah! What she said. ;) You NEED more decks. Life just won't be good without at least 20.

And Pollux, how can you not include yourself within our ranks? Even if you can't buy tons of decks, you still egg us all on. *lol* You're a regular enabler.

I totally agree! Being an enabler (and such an effective one by the way) is a classic sign of a taroholic ... and what about all those decks people just send to you? now that is what I call a master enabler! You are taroholic and never doubt it Pollux!!!

Ahem... so much for "Tarotholics Anonymous" being [/u] You've all been "outed" now... as if you needed to be... ;)

We have found it much easier to come forward than remain anonymous ... this way people can help us find what we know we need ;) :P ... we are proud of our affliction ... remember?

Oh, Jewel, you are so much the perfect Queen of Tarot-holics!
The above are my fav sentences... *ROFLMAO*
Couldn't have been worded better, so I was wondering, when will you start working on THE OFFICIAL TAROT-HOLICS MANIFEST?
*LOL*

Oh, An Enabler, I like the way it sounds! :D *LOL*
I can feel responsible for most GILLs and some AQUARIANs out there, and I have been delivering Stained Glass all over recently... *LOL* I am also involved with other decks, like Kiama's Vision Quest or Rhiannon's Nigel Jackson...
So, not all is lost! I still am a tarot-holic! Thank you for showing me the way again, sisters! :D *LOL*
As for the free decks, well, I'd better keep quiet and silent, No Comment. }) *LOL*

Demonesse  05 Nov 2002
LOL!

Pollux, the "Tarot Gollum" thread, very similar to this and veering wildly off topic, is the "Do you jealously guard your decks?" thread in Talking Tarot.

:) Give it a look!
