Hello Everyone !

I'm brand new to this tarrot forum. I am absolutely excited to be here.
I have recently began a spiritual journey and in the process so far I have aquired the spiral Tarrot deck. The deck speaks to me well and I find my thoughts drawn to it frequently. I have read Thirteen's Guide to tarrot and found it very helpful.
Yet I find myself stuck and struggling to completely understand this deck. I'm stuck at the hebrew letters and the symbols (excluding the zodiacs). Is there anybody who can help me with the symbols and their meanings ?
Another problem I'm running into is finding a spread that works for me.
Any suggestions, pointers, or direction on this one ?
All help is greatly appriciated, Thank You .
Oh and one more thing, I'm always inmterested in meeting people getting to know a forum. So drop a line say hello !

Hi Abe,

The Spiral is my favourite deck, the cards are so full of life and speak volumes - I use traditional R/W meanings to the cards, with it being a sort of Rider Waite clone but if you really want to go indepth with this deck, I would recommend the book by Kay Steventon.
It doesn't go into much detail with the minors but the Majors are fully covered - I've found this book to be a real help, it does tell you the name of the Hebrew lettering on the cards and also alot of background information like kabbalah and the zodiac.
Hope this helps :)

First of all, welcome to the forum!!! It's lovely to have you with us. :)

Now to your questions: If you are just beginning with tarot then I would recommend that you ignore the Hebrew letters and Qabalistic symbols on the cards for now. Those are useful to enhance the meanings beyond the basics, but if you're just starting, I think it'll only confuse things. You've already gotten a great start by reading Thirteen's basics. Another great book to check out is Joan Bunning's book which is also online (and free!) at www.learntarot.com. I especially recommend Janina Renee's Tarot for a New Generation. I learned so much from that book, and it's not specifically focused on one deck. Basically, you can learn from any book that's Rider-Waite based.

Personally, I love the Spiral Tarot and I think you can get a lot out of it. Those courts are the most intuitively read of any deck that I have so far. I also think it's an excellent choice for a beginner because of all the emotions in the pictures.

Welcome to the forums Abe. Personally I haven`t used the Spiral deck yet, thanks to all of the rave reviews it`s had here though it`s right up there on my wish list. I look forward to reading your posts.

Love and light

Oh my! You just walked into a football stadium filled to overflowing and asked everyone to come come up and shake your hand when you started to study tartot, sorta. Wait till you get addicted to buying new decks. Just kiding. None of the extra stuff is needed until and unless you want to add it in.

One of the nifty things about this forum is that there have been discussions on some of the trickier cards. There's a lot of advice hidden here and there in those threads. There are a lot of websites with people's interpretations to browse through as well. You don't have to agree with everyone. You don't have to agree with most of them even. It just helps to see the twist of logic other people have applied to the cards. Start with the definitions in the little white book (LWB) and learn to trust your instincts and intuition. Some times you'll turn up a card and know that the LWB definitions don't work this time. And you'll be right.

You might want to keep a journal of what does work for you. Plus that is a good place to write down spreads as people suggest them. Several can be found in the using tarot forum. More are at www.tarotspreads.com. Make up your own spread. I haven't yet seen the one good for all occasions kitchen sink spread. })

N'Joy ;)

As for the symbols, apart from suggesting to study Hebrew letters and Kabala if you can, and get the book, Mh... well, maybe I can't help you much! :(

I used a celtic cross, and the deck was too "airy" for it.
So I used my modified Star of David, a bit more mythological and symbolic, and the deck loved it! *LOL*
Is there much call to know how the David Star is? I think it is one of the most widespread, and to be found online almost everywhere...

Pollux, I would be interested in your Star of David spread... I'm going to post a new thread in Using Tarot Cards for it. See you there! :)

Hi, Abe - and welcome!

This is a great deck and I hope you enjoy working with it. Definitely Kay Stephenson's book is recommended: it goes into great depth on the imagery of the Majors and explains why she's chosen each mythological figure. In fact, I was about to offer to lend you mine as it's no good to me without the deck which was in my car when it got stolen - except I've just realised it must have been in the car too! If I'm wrong and it turns out to be hidden in the house I'll PM you, but I've got a nasty feeling they were together.

Yes, you should be able to use just about any of the RW based books as the theme is pretty much the same. The RW has such a wealth of resource books that you'll be spoilt for choice. I agree with Keslynn that your best bet is to forget everything except the imagery on the cards until you feel you've really got to grips with it - there's enough to keep you going for a while!

Hi Abe,

Listen, I stumbled around here for several weeks before hitting the New Members section of the Forum. It's good place to introduce yourself and let others do the same.

I'm pretty new here, myself. I'm finding this to be a generous and comfortable website. Good people from all over the globe.

Outstanding.

Welcome.
