I was wondering, are there any tarot decks - old or modern - that incorporate 3D models/figures into the artwork???
'Just that number one son has to do some more experimental work for his portfolio - he leaves his special school next July, but the interviews for Art College are just after Christmas - and I'm trying to help him find an 'original' slant on a recognisable theme.
Thanks

I don't think a lot of it either, lol, I think Dave McKean does it a whole lot better.
Thank you for sharing that tho, but I sort of meant 3D in a more hand made, hand rendered way.... sort of acrylic backdrops with handmade macquets for figures and props, if you follow.
Well, if there isn't, looks like I've uncovered a niche, lol.
Thanks again

Kaplan I lists the "Docters van Leeuwen Porceain Tarot" (pp. 188-189), in which the major arcana figures were "modeled in fine white clay, baked and polychromatized with oil paint and gold leaf."
There's also been some tarot jewelry representing the majors, but the original designs I've seen (i.e., those that are not simply pendant reproductions of the R/W cards) tend to be composed primarily of abstract shapes that are named after the major arcana cards.

Ooooo yessss, Liliana, something like that indeed :D Thank you.
Matthew - number one son - and I both work in a variety of 3D materials, including brass wire, clays, cloth materials and wood. I think it's something we would both like to have a go at actually.
I would like for him (and I) to pursue a slightly more modern outlook, without losing the traditional rider waite meanings..... hmmm, the brain is ticking over :D
"Docters van Leeuwen Porceain Tarot" .... I couldn't find it on a search on the net unfortunately, but I will definately keep an eye out for it. Thank you Jeanette and/or Lori.
Please keep them coming people, we appreciate your input
Thank you

The only place I've seen it mentioned is in Kaplan's encyclopedia, which further implies that only one set was made. But the encyclopedia listing does include black-and-white pictures of most of the figurines.

Not to mention an entire garden full of buildings and sculptures modelled on the Major Arcana. Find the 'Niki de St. Phalle' thread in Talking Tarot.

I've made some Ace of Pentacles Oil Burners and if you like to see what the finished product looks like go to: http://www.majortom.biz/ceramics.html
I've got some plans for the other aces and the majors when I can get some work space sorted out...
I'm sure I've seen some major arcana dolls somewhere....
Allibee it sure sounds exciting for your son at art college. :)

It really will be Tom, especially as I've just done my HND there in GD and Illustration, so he knows the college a little and they know him too.
The big problem is, he has Aspergers Syndrome, an autistic spectrum disorder, which makes him very vunerable in social situations, and the only two classes they do on his subject are for school leavers. Noone from his school has ever been on these courses before. I've been around these kids for the last two years, and to say they are boisterous scumbags, would be the understatement of the year :(
So were are considering starting him on the two year theatre and performing arts class there, as there is a much wider spectrum of ages on it, he's good at theatre too, and it will help him 'perform' in social situations. Then he can go on the Foundation in Art and Design at another part of the College which has 17 - 70 year olds on, before doing his HND.
We have to make the decision this week ... its a toughie !
Love the burners!

Over on ebay there's an artist doing tarot dolls, but they're loosely based, they look more like Aztec mummies.
They do look nice though, she's been doing a number of them. You can find them right away by doing a search on 'tarot doll' (singular, not dolls) and then clicking on her 'other auctions' to get the entire batch.
