Hello,
Does anyone here know of a circus type tarot deck? With jugglers and clowns and things like that?
I have had a look at the Phantasmagoric Theater Tarot, and I really like the look of that - reminds me of a TV program although I can't place what - maybe the Nightmare before Xmas, those kids on the 9 Wands look like the ones that tied up Santa!
Anyway, I was wondering what else there might be around like this.

I've got nothing against clowns... although I haven't seen any of those horror movies! As long as they stay in the circus ring and don't come and get me!!

Asian circuslike/festival tarots:
The Moon Princess Himiko seems to have a high-wire juggler for the Fool, the cranes and a street performer for the Moon...www.sasugabooks.com for the Japanese version at a lower cost. The colors are really bright, circuslike. The bookstore is in Boston and many of the decks that you see are in stock. Check out google for the Mystic Eye tarot page for card samples or use TarotGarden.com
Tarotgarden.com is good for looking at different themes and different styles.
U.S. Games (www.usgamesinc.com) seems to be linked to AllTarot where you can navigate through and get a free reading/see all cards from the Chinese Tarot deck. It has a circuslike/street performer feel.
Just fyi and my take.

Have you looked at the Navigator's Tarot of the Mystic Sea? All the characters are dressed in circus-type outfits and I think some cards have circus performers. It is based more on the sea than circus, though.

I have been playing with the idea of creating a circus tarot myself. I've got ideas but no finished pictures yet. If anyone has suggestions, please post them!! I juggle semi-professionally and I'm saving money for a tightrope (if I can ever stop buying so many tarot decks :) ). I have often thought about combining two of my great obsessions....
Would there be any interest if I were to complete this project and self-publish??
The Karma Tarot is probably your best bet for a currently existing circus-like tarot. I think it's very cool.

Thanks for all the links and ideas :D ... Now I just have to find the time to sit down and have a good look through it all! The Karma Tarot is pretty cool but I'm not so sure about the Moon Princess one... The art is great but I don't really like pip minors :(
Kyrielle, I'd be interested if you make a deck! I'm a juggler too - although just a beginner - which is kind of why I was asking around! Good luck with getting your tightrope!
I was thinking that a circur/circus arts deck is what i'd create when I knew enough to have a shot at doing something myself (or if i had the artistic talent!). I had thought that if it was a full circus thing then coins would link to the sideshows/chance games? But that is about as far as I had gotten :) I think I read in a book last night (78 degrees possibly) that the magician used to be shown as a juggler in some older decks - maybe the quote was "juggling the universe"??? Not sure and I'll have to go and look it up!
PS Just got tickets to the Cirque du Soliel in the Royal Albert Hall in London!! I haven't seen them before so I am very excited :D

I think it's a Marseilles thing, the Magician being called the Juggler.
I'm kind of hung up about the suits in a circus tarot. Wands/batons, swords...but what do you have pretty consistently in a circus that could be a cups thing? Pentacles could be rings or spheres.
evenstar -- Do you know the show Cirque is presenting? I'm familiar with some of them, but I can't remember which show is touring Europe right now. I'm also a big fan, but alas have never made it to a live performance. Gotta rely on videos, CDs, and the fan club.
And then there's my new signature...

Oh right, I've only got a RW deck at the moment. I don't know what uses cups in the circus. It's a hard one... Might have to incorporate them somehow else...

It's the Saltimbanco show. I think it's one of the older touring shows. I haven't actually seen a full part of anything they've done yet, just a tv doco a while back. I'm going with a bunch of juggling friends so there'll be an appreciative audience. I know just enough to know how hard what they do is, and how good they are to do it so effortlessly. I'm really looking forward to it :D:D

Saltimbanco originated in 1991. Kumbalawe is one of my all-time favorite Cirque songs. Le Baron rules.

I've heard of a full blown circus tarot in the works but haven't seen any images yet. It's probably a way's off.
