wow...has anyone ever seen this deck? i love the movie and can imagine the images would make a stunning deck. it's on ebay...3 hours left! already almost $105.

i'm not gonna bid...can't afford it at that price ;-)

anyone ever seen or used one? what did you think?

cuddles  06 Dec 2002
and there's another one for $150...oh, if only money were no object....

cuddles  06 Dec 2002
nevermind...i did a search and got the answer...but anyone looking for it with some extra cash should rush now and try their luck ;-)

I think the reason they're so expensive is because it was a limited edition--from what I heard they were only given out originally to the people who came to the first day of the movie's opening. Those were the only people who were able to get a set of these & they haven't gone into general distribution. So what you have here is a specialty collectible that automatically entered into movie 'memorabelia' with no additional decks available after that first give-away.

At least that's what I heard. I could be all wrong on it.

From a prior auction, “The Nightmare Before Christmas, This Rare Set Of Disneyland’s Tarot Cards Here from the " DISNEYLAND’S NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS HAUNTED EVENING EVENT" These were given to the guest after the evening was over Wednesday October 03 2001, These are Very hard too find even on eBay . " features The Cast from The Nightmare Before Christmas. This is a 26pc Tarot Card set, this is a complete set 26 cards, These are smaller versions of the Tarot Cards that were featured Floating in the séance room inside the Disneyland Haunted Mansion during the holiday 2001 makeover. There are two sets of cards. One set is backed in a Red maze shaped pattern with Madame Loeta in the middle. The second set is backed with green skulls and the haunted mansion in a circle in the center. This event at Disneyland was based on Tim Burton’s cult classic Film The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Size of Tarot Cards measure around 7 inches by 4 and 1/4 inch. This Would Make A Great Late Or Early Christmas Gift For That Nightmare Before Christmas Collector In Your Life, Or Just Keep It For Yourself, The Tarot Cards and the Box are in Excellent condition.. and Remember these Tarot cards were only available on October 03 2001 at Disneyland, If you're a collector of Nightmare Before Christmas…”

Each box contains 2 sets of 13 cards, they differ only by the backing (red and green). The faces are identical.

These are Disney cards, and bear no relation to Tarot in any manner. They are a collectors item and only a collectors item.

well, i'm relieved to hear it's not something i would want...so i don't have to regret not having the money for them :-)

I found a page with some info on them.

http://www.houseofdisney.com/events/nightmare/merchandise1.shtml

It lists the tarot deck as a limited edition of 1,200. Some of the cards are shown at the bottom of the page. It says you had to be an event guest at Disneyland/world to get them. And yes, they were sold in two sets of 13, together.

grr. rather expensive cards. but i so want them. oh, nevermind. indeed if money were no object... :(

Khatruman  10 Dec 2002
Was just looking at the cards on the site, and they seem to use tarot only in name. Really, they look like a spoof on the twelve days of Christmas, with thirteen days instead of twelve, as is the theme of the film with the spirit of Halloween taking over the spirit of Christmas. I guess, to the Disney animation group, using tarot links them with all things spooky and Hallowe'en, as if tarot, of course, belongs with all that mumbo jumbo... Plastic Draculas and Frankensteins and Sheet Ghosts and silly string spider webs and the generally generic spookiness of Halloween.

Leave it to Disney to sanitize tarot as it has nearly every other evocative piece of folklore it has gotten its massive animated hand in. Hmmm, maybe this means Disney will do an animated feature with Alaistar Crowley as the lead character.... ohh, God, that would be the day!!! :D

Peace!

*ROFLMAO* Perhaps we should send them the idea ~giggles~ ... they could do a whole thing on the Golden Dawn and good ole' Alister.

Demonesse  10 Dec 2002
Ugh. If it had Aleister Crowley's mug on it that would be an excellent reason NOT to buy it. I can't imagine going "ooh...aah..." over THAT one. Give me the Mayor of Nightmare Town any day.

HudsonGray  10 Dec 2002
Gawd! I never saw him in the hat. He looks a complete idiot!

I wonder what he would have done if he'd been born in the 1950's---probably would have gotten into dianetics or something.

Khatruman  10 Dec 2002
Now THERE ya go, dangerdork!

Great find! Crowley in that hat will be perfect. Maybe Disney can just do a new Fantasia with the Golden Dawn: The Sorcerer's DEPENDants!

Have a bunch of marching tarot cards that Crowley can't control.

Peace!
