I know a lot of folks have the VR deck, and I have a question. I bought this deck early in the fall, and really liked it. But I have the worst time reading with it, and I pride myself on being able to read with almost all my decks. But this one is like that person who never sees anything but disaster around every corner. This deck is constantly putting the worst possible light on everything. My other decks read the usual variety of possibilities, and illuminations, but this deck keeps muttering "All is lost, all is lost"
Does anyone else find this with the VR???

I had a similar feeling.
I never used the VR but a few "try times", but I studied the deck with some attention, and felt it really gloomy.
My rational explanation was that while every single card is open and delightful, looking at too many of them in a row, sort of subtly conjured that dark feeling.
Have You tried making readings with but a small number of cards?
And I would also suggest you not to place cards on any colored surface. Myabe it's just a stupid idea, but we could all need a bit of adjustment to black and white images.

I've never been able to read with my Victoria Regina, I don't think it's dark just a very masculine deck. I too loved the deck when I first received it but after a few readings realised that it didn't speak to me, I was drawing blanks with every reading and I found that I didn't like the deck enough to persevere with it.
I don't usually bond with my decks from the first readings unless they are special like my Spiral and Crow's Magick , but the VR felt like a stranger every time I picked it up, I haven't looked at this deck in a while, its just part of my collection now. :)

I also REALLY wanted the VR.
I got it for a Festivus gift this year and have had troubles with it that I thought was because I'm pretty new to learning tarot. But I did a 3 card new deck spread and I got a reply that lead me to believe it will exagerate the good and the bad and have fun at my expense. (Prince of Coins, Wheel of Fortune and Prince of Wands: all reversed. I read the second card as the "outcome". )
Do a new card spread and see what it has to say to you.
I also am having a harder time with the black and white than I expected. I'm used to the Alchemical and Universal Waite so I find it very monochromatically busy. Haven't yet trained my eye to pick out the details.
And it's large and I've got pretty big hands for a woman .
I agree that it demands more time to be worked with.

I bought the VR when it first came out.
I find it extremely light. It is not, for me, a doom and gloom deck.

i don't find the deck necessarily dark but it comes from the mind set of the queen victoria reign in england. things we might hold in a lighter respect today was probably darker to them. i think if you read to lighten the mood from the 19th century and read as if in the 21st instead the readings won't feel so brooding. queen victoria had very heavy energy and became an archetype of a particular century. not many ppl who've ever lived have had that kind of power.

Very interesting thread... I'm hoping (and pretty sure) that I'm getting the V.R. deck for Christmas. :D I've only looked over the deck in the store and didn't necessarily get the feeling that it was a gloom & doom deck, however I didn't try any readings with it. I do very much agree with truthsayer's comments about the influences Queen Victoria had on her time and this is one of the things which has drawn me to the deck.
Keeping my hopes up for a box under the tree... ;)
[edited to add a comment:]
I just looked at your new deck reading. If you'd like my thoughts; That 10 of Pentacles reversed makes me think that you're going to have a bit of a shake up in the way you read these cards - they're not going to carry the same meanings you're used to. The 8 of Cups reversed makes me think that the deck will, once you've learned it, be a stable and consistent deck for you. The Hermit almost always makes me think of enlightenment. Then you pulled The Tower as a clarification card - change, shake up... again, new deck & new meanings/outlooks.
Overall... If I'd gotten this reading for a new deck... my first thought would be "steep learning curve, but well worth the effort." Once I mastered the deck, it would bring a lot to my readings. That's my thoughts anyway... FWIW
