Yeah got the Fey !!

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 06 Dec 2002, and now archived in the Forum Library.

I was shopping in town and WOW i say the fey tarot! I had never suspected that i could get it out here in the netherlands..i thought i had to order it! :) So how could i resist such a deck? ;)

Anyway its a gorgeouse deck..lots of purple and the borders are much smaller than most lo scarabeo decks. So the artwork is better visible. There is even an Aha card for me in this deck.I have always had trouble with the two of wands. This decks shows a fearie sitting on a nest looking quite affraid cause she has to leave the nest for the first time, jumping out and while falling she has to learn to fly ore else she will fall!

This decks looks a little funny but i think i can use it in for readings.
So far my terrible little review :D

Jewel  06 Dec 2002
Being a lover of faeries I am looking forward to learning more about this deck ... thanks for posting this thread!

truthsayer  06 Dec 2002
is this the lo scarebeo fey deck or another? glad you like it! i'd like to see that 2 of wands.

Maan  06 Dec 2002
Its the lo scarabeo one.
O i wish i had a scanner than i could show it to you!

Maybe i can get some pic's up next week when i'm meeting a friend with a scanner...so hope, hope ;)

Cerulean  06 Dec 2002
I've been playing with the Fey.

Goes well with one of my Japanese anime decks, Miracle and tiny Universal Waite to 'check ideas.'

If you like Pokemon, Pickachu and Totoro, there might be some great smiles for you.

Mari H.

P.S. on another thread, someone posted the artist's website. I like this tarot of her images the best.

lunalafey  06 Dec 2002
I ordered this deck in JUNE when I first saw it was to be released. JUST got a response from LWW, saying the kit came but they are backordered. NOW I have to WAIT MORE!!!!
WHAAAAA......
not gonna visit this thread....don't wanna know anymore....
WHAAAAAA.....

Jewel  06 Dec 2002
OKies here is my question ... are we talking about the new fey kit that just came out or the Luptelli deck? ... I am confused as both are published by LoScarabeo

Maan  06 Dec 2002
Well i'm talking about the new fey tarot the one that ricardo minetti co created :) The one that you can see at tarot garden's new releases page.

Kit? There is a lwb instead of the two cards that lo scarabeo usually puts in. But thats all now book ore something but it might be also available? I don't know

And yes i see some pocemon there ;)
The only thing i really don't like are the backs...there tipically lo scarabeo they have taken a picture of the deck ( in this case the lovers) and doubled it twice on the backs. Luckely for me they did it in my favourite colour, purple, so not as bad as it could have been :(

Cerulean  06 Dec 2002
Yes, there is a book and deck set.
The book does come in an English version....avaliable through Tarotgarden.com and Alidastore.com

Best,

Mari H.

Maan  07 Dec 2002
Hi Mari
THanks for the info. Do you have the book? Is it worth the trouble?

Love and light
Maan

Cerulean  08 Dec 2002
Yes I have the book.

The reason that I think it's worth the trouble is there are small sketches included in the text and general background information on the creation of the deck. Next the write-ups for each the cards describe key elements, colors chosen, ideas associated with the theme of the card and a little about the character depicted.

There's some phrasing in the book that shows me it was translated. Still, there is charm and interest in the information for me, so I can lightly note penciled words if I want to rephrase the information for a reading.

I rather have the deck and book and little white book, as they all complement one another to me. I have a few anime style decks, but this is the first one with text in English for me. I also like the ideas of explaining the colors and key elements just enough to get a theme, but not so exhaustive to make the character 'stuck' in a certain role.

Hope that helps.

Mari H.

Maan  08 Dec 2002
Yeah is helps alot Thank you Mari
I was wondering about the colours chosen. The lwb tells that the suit of wands is related to fire and swords to air. But the colours on the wand cards are more greenish ( pentacles like) and the swords are very red.

And the fact that its badly transelated doesn't bother me cause i serious doubt if i will notice :D My english is not good enough to notice mistakes of others ;)

So if you might get out of this rambling..i'm going to order the book. Do you have an isbn number?

Thanks
Love and light

888395257-x.

I hope you can obtain the book separately.

Here is a small excerpt on the suits and colors. I am glad for your questions, because I did not know that people would only be obtaining a deck with pamphlet. While you probably are good at reading with the tarot, I actually was quite surprised by the deck.

For instance, without the book I would have guessed, but been a little puzzled that the element of wands might be growing plants instead of sticks or wands. I would have also guessed some of the minors showed an integrated impression of what the number should mean, rather than the correct number of wands plus a picture scene.

Below, some phrases from the book on the minor suits.

Chalices, with the element water, refer to sentiments and the spirit. The Chalice is nourishment for the soul and the water symbolism shows a free flowing spirit that is full of life and wisdom. (My paraphrasing is the gist, not the whole of the meanings for you). The Chalice Fey are sweet and intense, but they are not noisy or cheeky--their eyes and thoughts show depth and comfort. These Fey focus on beauty and enjoyment, finding pleasure from observing people in gentle and close relationships and small moments of joy. If one is in touch with their emotions and able to reflect what they feel at any given moment, that is what is important to these Fey beings.

Pentacles in this tarot refer to the sphere of the world and material possessions. We normally equate pentacles to coins or money and the element earth. We typically use the pentacles suit seeks to show what we as human beings define as our concept of wealth, how we measure what we have, what has been built and what is being conserved or hoarded. We also show the pentacles suit usually in the form of being in touch with the earth--usually the mood is slow, rather static and stable and the different forms and shapes of matter and how we exist.
The Fey tarots colors and focus will be different. You can see that in that the colors are red, violet and light touches of yellow. The emphasis in the Fey world shows the pentacles as yellow bits of matter--a highlight or accent, but not the overwhelming brightness of gold money that some tarots and human beings would associate with wealth and plentitude.
The Fey beings in the Pentacles are simple, not prone to deceiving each other. They are connected to the objects and places and do draw energy from the spirit of a place and surroundings---but they are not subject nor slave to possessions. They show how to live in harmony wih the material world without denying the world of magic and dreams.
(I filled in my notes here: when you get the book, you may find the phrasing somewhat different, but I was trying to make sense of this suit).

Wands normally are associated with fire, passions and ambition. In other tarots and idealogies, we see this as the sphere of social relationships between humans. The human quest for fire is the human reaching for an element that is roaring, destructive, and unreliable but also thriving, useful and powerful heat. In fire we see a powerful carnel aspect and our human reaching and quests are a restless reflection of it---indeed, we may see our human restlessness as an aspect that is not expressed in other created being.
{But wands are not expressed as red flames of fire in the Fey tarots. Instead, we ask the mind to go to 'the green fuse' that fuels the fire of Dylan Thomas' poem (I think this is right), where the power of green growth and its vivid, reaching strength is more reflective of the world of the Fey.}
In the Fey tarots, the Wands are the colors that reflect natural tones of greens and blue, with lighter touches of brown.
The Wand Fey live in harmony with trees and nature. They act and are never still. Their essence guides them to places unknown, places they have never known and they often make mistakes. But they are ever-reaching in their quest for new emotions, energies and discoveries. They show the aspects of living related to action and doing in human society.

Swords, usually associated with air, usually refer to the intellect and responsibility. This is a difficult suit in most tarots because they seem to bear most of all the pain and violence...(Mari's note:)...both as targets and doers of the deeds. Perhaps it is the nature of intelligence and intellect to always question sensations, return them to our minds and then to draw from them our most important lessons. (Mari's note--this tendency of over-analysis can be also contribute to our inner moods of despair and ruin in nine and ten of swords). The sword, Okham's razor, sharp, merciless, but also noble and sure, is like the mind of man.
Nevertheless, the Sword Fey shine with great virtue. they are courageous, noble and their main objectives are the responsibility and understanding of of what their actions bring. The duty is not to stop at appearances and to do what is right is independent of the cost and effort involved....
With swords there is little left for joy...but the Fey in the Sword suit do draw some happiness...thanks to them, the other Fey are happy and serene.
(Mari's note: the hue of red actually would be associated with strength and courage in traditional European tarots and an aspect of fire; but in the Fey Tarots, Mari suggests that you think of it as resembling the courageous heart, the life-giving crimsom of Asian cultures where blood is life and full of good fortune. In Asia, to wear it and give items of red at births and weddings is good manners. You do not wear red to Chinese funerals, because it speaks of life, not respect for the dark stillness of the deceased and family).

I do hope these notes, even with many of my subjective takes, adds to your enjoyment of the tarots. Even if you do not get the book, perhaps this perspective might assist you and others who wonder about the color scheme.
Mari Hoshizaki

P.S. If Riccado from Lo Scarabeo sees this, perhaps he would not mind my additional notes to others...the green note is from a poetry seminar...the red aspect of the swords isn't in the summary pages of the suite, just noted individually with each card. While the Asian perspective might be my own, perhaps it could be helpful as people were to look at the colors of each suit.

Maan  08 Dec 2002
Thank you very much Mari
THis deck is really readable for me and your notes make it even more accesible. I hope i can get the book without the deck.In the meanwhile i can use your notes :) ( i'm printing it out the keep with my notes about this deck)

RiccardoLS  09 Dec 2002
The book has been published just as an English Edition, so it should be available in all English speking countries as a kit edition with the deck.
I will enquire anyway on what may be the easiste way to find the book without the cards (for whom already has the deck).

I feel a bit akward addressing the Fey Tarot topic, for I'm not partial to it. :)
Anyway, regarding the colors, every suit has its own color code, which its not based on a single color, rather on a combination. Swords are red, but they are also grey and silver, sometimes with blue hues. The end results wanted to place the Sword Feys inside a very cold athmosphere, but suddenly warmed by burst of scarlet.
The Pentalces are more yellow and purple with nuances of green. The intention was to picture Feys inside a confortable, worm, cozy environment, and so on.

Best,

Riccardo

Jewel  09 Dec 2002
Well I am interested *LOL* ... but definetly want it with the book. I think the exploration of the color use would be very interesting. Riccardo, thanks for the insight on what to look for. I will keep my eyes peeled for the kit here locally.

Hi everybody, two reviews of this deck have just been posted on Tarot Passages:

Cerulean  17 Dec 2002
Wonderful reviews. Yehhhh, beautiful details for me to soak in. In my own review and storytelling, I gave this deck a Six of Cups.

My own review will be from a perspective of an American and Japanese anime fan, with some commentary on the color. Some of the adult fans of the better illustration artists that have dipped into Manga and anime might find this a very nice deck---it would be the shojo style

Not for young children--but if you can handle Metropolis, Final Fantasy or Princess Monoke, then this tarot might suit you.

Some of the scenes and structures of the Fey also took off from some of Lo Scarabeo's previous tarots. The color scheme from Tarots of the Origins for the minors, the similarity of some of the major assignments: Chariot as a pumpkin has a similarity to one of the other fairystyle tarots and the Hanged Man from Journey to the Orient. The nice thing about this is one can see the Fey Tarot as a culmination of different Lo Scarabeo deck perspectives.

Now that two wonderful reviewers focused on the majors, I can happy dance with the details that I like best.

Thank you for the wonderful links and reviews,

Mari H.

P.S. I found Lee's Fae Tarot review and other fairy oracle deck reviews invaluable as well

Maan  18 Dec 2002
Thank you Lee for the wonderful review.
Now i REALY want the book!!!!!!!!!
:(
Can somebody help me get this i already checked with my favo bookstore and they can't get it for me :(

RiccardoLS  18 Dec 2002
I have been asking in LoScarabeo.
Before Christams it's impossible to get the book as a "stand alone", but it should be possible in January (I don't know on what terms).
Just write to: info@loscarabeo.com

Riccardo

p.s. errata on the DW review. The Fey is already available and not from March.

Maan  18 Dec 2002
Thank you Riccardo :*
I don't mind the waiting aslong as i know ist possible. And from the reviews the book is getting i think the waiting is worth it!

I know I know, it is terrible what you've all done to me.

As soon as I saw those reviews on Passages a few days I ago, I ordered both the Fey and also the new Dürer from Alida store. They should be here by Monday. Reading the reviews, and seeing the scans, it is clear to me that the Fey deck has been very very carefully thought out and is a some kind of wonderful tarot breakthrough! BRAVO RICCARDO.
I can't WAIT

RiccardoLS  23 Dec 2002
Actually I am very ansious for feedback.
I admit when I sent the decks for reviewing I was a bit nervous. :)
Of the rewiewers I was most scared of, I'm just missing Solandia opinion.

And I was really overjoyed that Lee liked it so much. Since Lee started reviewing LS decks, I was never able to give him a deck he really liked! :)

The more I think of it, the more I realize that what makes the deck special is Mara. And special it is.
I helped, the book helps, but she put a "soul" inside every card.

So, if You happen to see/get the Fey Tarot, let me know what you think for the good and the bad :) pleeeeesse :)

(Merry Christmas, by the way)

I'll have to check it out :) It seem to me you liked them, but not totally. You are a difficult person :)

Trogon  24 Dec 2002
I finally got around to reading this thread. Congratulations on getting the new deck Maan! I checked out some of the images on-line... wow! I love this deck! I just added a new entry to my "most wanted Tarot decks." ;)

Cerulean  27 Dec 2002
They wanted the Fey. With the book. The art is lovely, but they all wanted the Fey storyline, meanings and backstories
Of all the decks that I took to Minneapolis, Minnesota---yes the home of Llewellyn---the gifts of Cosmic Tribe and Tarot de Paris as reading decks were marvelled and warmly received.
But they wanted me to read with the Fey.
I am going to review from an anime fan's perspective---but you have to know that the two people that I was most anxious for feedback were graphic/tailoring design and ceramic artists by training. One of them does web-work professionally and the other is an educational teacher in the school district---and their affinities for different tarot systems usually comes from Thoth derived decks. They are both very much perfectionists for their art disciplines.
The reading spread that I used served more to confirmed themes that they recently explored/experienced. First I laid down three cards and then three lines of three cards (nine cards total). Card one from the first draw was clarified by the first line of three cards, Card two from the second draw was explained by line two of three cards, etc. My only surprised discovery was to find that in the second line of three for both readings, that card was truly the heart of the matter within the inner landscape of the querent.
I believe the Fey is a very wonderful alternative for another look at internal issues. None of the questioners thought at first the pretty Fey deck would be more than a delightful skip and jump--it was inbetween a psychological heavyweight such as the Tarot of the Spirit and a creative kick in the butt that the Thoth would be for us.
Best wishes,
Mari Hoshizaki

Dear Mari:

Who is "they"?

Aerin  29 Dec 2002
I've been doing some digging to see if I can find the deck. Llewelyn already have the deck and book via their site: I am told that it won't get released to places like amazon.com until March 2003 (for some reason). For me to get it from the US means a shipping charge of between $20 and $30 so I passed.

The LoScarabeo deck is available from a European supplier here http://www.alidastore.com/indexen2.html so I have ordered the deck from them. I have never used them before so I will let you know what the service is like...

Aerin

firemaiden  29 Dec 2002
Hi -- I ordered mine from Alida too, and am still waiting....probably all the holidays slowed it down, hopefully it will be here tomorrow!!!

truthsayer  29 Dec 2002
i ordered my copy from tarot garden and got it in just a few days. i was expecting lo scarabeo cards that felt superficial and unconnectable but i was very pleasantly surprized. not that i dislkike LS decks. my fav deck the neferteri is LS but i seem to trade a lot of the LS decks i get. the fey cards have an inner depth that i don't expect to see in cartoon style cards. there's an unmistakable warmth in them like my beloved hanson roberts. i really like how the book was done making it accessible to both beginners and more advanced readers. i have 2 other fey decks--the brian froud faery and the fairy wicca. i hope to eventually get the fairy ring oracle, too but i think i will like the fey best of all. the cards aren't rearranged rws cards. they have their own identity but it's still w/in the context of what i'd likely see in a rws clone.

they say you can't re-invent the wheel but this just might be the exception!

Shame shame shame on you for writting that!!!! now I am going to have to go get this deck ... thank goddess I have a couple of gift certificates to Barnes & Noble ;) ... you are evil truthsayer, but I still love you (would do a kissy icon, but forgot how *LOL*)

And yes ... I will be picking it up today, granted that Barnes & Noble has it in stock.

Jewel  03 Jan 2003
Well off I went yesterday to get the Fey at Barnes & Noble with my gift certificates but much to my dissapointment they did not have any in stock ~pouts~ ... I took Faunabay's advice (we were on the phone) and had them order me a copy ... I have to wait 7 to 10 business days ~pout pout pout~ ... NOT FAIR!!!!!

--- a few hours later ---

I just got back from reading Lee's review .... I WANT MY DECK NOW NOT IN 7 TO 10 BUSINESS DAYS!!!!!! ~cries, moans and pouts~

Cerulean  03 Jan 2003
I had to type hastily from my friend's computer. My two favorite friends in the Minneapolis area. I have known one of them for years and he is a gifted art/website design guy. His significant other graduated as an art major and educational specialist--just before the reading we did with the Fey, the significant other was watching Nickelodeon cartoons.
Both the significant other and myself like Japanese anime and are familar with the genre...so it was really a friendly and warm atmosphere for a good reading with the Fey.
Do people agree with the review posted on the Fey? I do...
Mari H.

firemaiden  03 Jan 2003
aha... thank you! Sounds like you had fun.
I am still [/color]waiting for mine to arrive...as soon as I get it, I will write... :*

Violet Gargoyle  04 Jan 2003
Just ordered mine via Barnes and Noble online- weird that you can get it on B and N in the US, but Amazon.com still has the release date in March.

Guess I am in a Faerie mood, since I ordered the Brian Froud Companion CD along with the Fey Deck (I already have Froud's Oracle)

... And all those Lang/Dover books I got for Yule :D, urgh- I'm going to lose my reputation as a menacing gargoyle if this keeps up....

Aerin  04 Jan 2003
Mine's in the post, along with the Romeo and Juliet (aka Shakespeare) since I couldn't resist.

Airmail from mainland Europe to UK can be a bit dodgy, it was posted on Monday and there was New Year and now I'm away all next week.....

Aerin

Cerulean  04 Jan 2003
Aerin and others, I hope you and the Fey do well...the more I play with it, the more I see past Lo Scarabeo designs influences...such as the use of color and division of suits from the Origins...the pumpkin chariot from the Fairy Tarots...but the newer anime style also is fun for me.
And Aerin again, did you get the small Romeo and Juliet? The large size version is tempting the collector side of me, but nontarot friends who have seen the small version that I carry were astonished how pretty it is...one of them who heard about my Fey experience and saw the Romeo and Juliet last night said, "My goodness, this isn't like my mom's tarot reading around the 1970's..."
I told them tarot has come a long way in popular culture and is like films and anime...it would be silly to think that one's dear mama's tarot was the last word. He even said his mother was afraid to read for him because it might jinx him.
If people now saw the Fey and Romeo and Juliet, I don't think they would have that opinion any more. Just fyi,, the big Romeo and Juliet tarot has a great booklet and the small size edition has the same booklet in the nice small size.
These are my two favorite different reading tarots at the moment, as I'm using Dante as my study deck.

firemaiden  04 Jan 2003
Mari, what does it mean that you "see past" the designs?

Cerulean  04 Jan 2003
see past Lo Scarabeo designs influences...such as the use of color and division of suits from the Origins...the pumpkin chariot from Fairy Tarot...but the newer anime style also is fun for me.

Hello Firemaiden,

The above quote means I see past design influences from other Lo Scarabeo decks.

Tarot of the Origins is another Lo Scarabeo title. The use of color and division of the suits in the Fey is similar.

Whoops, I think the correct title is the Fairy Tarot. The Chariot card is a pumpkin, I believe. Thanks for the correction.

Hi Mari isnt that the chariot form the whimsical tarot?

firemaiden  04 Jan 2003
Mari, I just realized that by "past" you meant "previous/earlier" I thought you meant that you could see past them, like seeing beyond them....so that confused me...

Cerulean  04 Jan 2003
I don't have the Whimsical Deck by Mary Hanson Roberts, if you are talking about her deck. She's a nice illustrator but I just have never taken to her work. I've given away her decks in the past, and saw samples of the Whimsical. Not for me.

Her deck came out later than the majors only Italian decks that had such illustrations, Fairy Tarots or some of the other fairy tale tarots by Lo Scarabeo. I guess her fairy tale sources were probably different--is she English?

firemaiden  09 Jan 2003
HI! :D
Well, I am just opening it now. Boy, these cards sure have charisma! You know, my first reaction is, there is such a warm, loving feeling coming out of the cards. Look, I have just turned to the Devil card. He is eating a tree!! Oh my god that is so funny, and he looks embarrassed that we caught him in the act. I LOVE it. There is so much feeling here, these are not just pictures, its like they sing! Wow, now here is the Sun card, I can FEEL the sun on me. These cards are so experiential, that's just amazing. Oh now I'm at that famous Giudizio card. Wow! O migod! There is a fairy half in half out of the paper!!! She looks thrilled to be coming out! And the mischief of that blue fairy tweeking the artists hair. Fun. This card looks to be about freedom, and release! What a novel interpretation of a card I always found dreary, almost always reminds me of the land of the living dead. Here this is really about living! Oh geeze! The world on a snail, that reminds me of Horton hears a who! Fantastic, the microcosmos. I'd love to see what that book says about this.

Gosh, now I am on the Chalices, such a warm feeling ooo! the 10! That's gorgeous. I am so tired of the traditional family values card, these little guys looks as happy as a bug in a rug, and their rainbow is almost like a hologram, it is so radiant....oooooooo the Fante! Such a cool, meditative card, that sweet sweet fish! Aha! The King! What power! how does she do it! The calm, pure energy of this card is directed straight out at me!

Okay, now I am on Denari, this are goofy! Oh ho ho, the seven! What a tangled up tree! And the ten! Such funny little furry bug things under the table, are those their pets? That one blue guy is looking straight at me, like I'm the one who just told a joke. He thinks I'm funny too! He's saying, "my, well look who showed up for dinner". Uh-oh, the King....what did I do??? I am sorry! Please don't be mad.

Oh geeeeeeeeez, the ace of wands, is that daphne turning into a tree? She seems delighted, but I hope it doesn't hurt. Oh, 'here's that famous 2 of wands. Boy, what perspective. I am getting dizzy looking down, quick, I better move on...OH WOW the seven of Wands! Incredible color, Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah! The cavaliere! That is my favorite bird!!! Weeeeeeeeee.

Uh-oh, now I am on the swords. These are scary. ....oh no! What happened? My 8 of Swords has her bra on! I thought she was going to be nude! What is this? the censured version for puritanical America? I want my money back. (JUST KIDDING!!).. Help! the 10 is turning into a pile of Sand! Oh boy!.

Well, that sure was fun, for a first look. Now, I can't wait to see what I can learn from these cards.

Love.

Great to hear that you like this deck so much Firemaiden. I loved reading you vivid post. I just had to take my copy out and look the cards up!

firemaiden  10 Jan 2003
Here is another card that really stuns me: I was just looking through the cards, asking "who is looking at me?" to each card, since in many cards there seems to be one figure looking at the viewer -, it is sometimes a minor figure, for example in the knave of chalices it is the fish who seems to be looking; in the World card, the dragon (I think -- those eyes are pretty tiny) -- then I came to the Five of Pentacles.

I thought no one noticed me -- then! all of a sudden I saw it! The big furry Spook in the window, looking at me, who am warm inside! And I suddenly understood!

Usually of course in this card we are on the outside with the shoeless beggars freezing in the snow, looking or not looking into the firelit scene in the church we pass. But just a few days ago I got the (spiral) five of pentacles reversed, it was actually snowing outside, and I felt I was coming down with the chills, I read the card (since it was upside down) as a warning to stay inside and stay warm.

So I thought it so incredible today (it is still snowing in Berlin) to see this Fey card is actually painted as an inside-out version of the RW clones 5 of pentacles. We are inside enjoying the warmth, with hot tea and a fire, and there is that big furry spook flying in the window, in the snow, looking in ---

-- instead of thinking, "oh poor me, I am in the snow with no shoes on and those other people are warm", I think:
"oh! gosh, we are warm, and those poor creatures outside are cold" or, alternatively,:
" there sure are some scary weird things out there! Good thing the door is locked", or:

The spook is looking at me -- he sees me and I see him, but the people inside drinking tea and enjoying their fire see neither of us.

What does it say about this card in the book?

la la la la la la, nani nani na na....................heheheheheheheheh, why does this make me so happy? To cause other people to fall into the same predicament, that is the purpose of a Phd in French. I didn't get the Phd....I guess I don't need it now! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Cerulean  10 Jan 2003
The spook was inspired by a Totoro character, or perhaps, Pikachu.

If you ever get to see the film Totoro, you will find the girl is first frightened, then enchanted by the forest guardians. The guardians from the forest in the film are usually noticed by the children taking shelter or going past a tori shrine or spirit gate. Of course in the films, the adults are ignoring what the old shrine means. The adults in the film seem like old-time 20th century folk with a Western viewpoint.

What seems scary is truly not, if one actually walks out and interacts with the natural world with the same curiousity that it looks in our houses at us. In the best eyes of the kindly child with pure intentions, the reaction of the spirits of the natural world is the same.

In Spirited Away, the newer film by the same Japanese director (and Disney, of all companies), there is also a spook called No Face that follows the child. He at first seems harmless, then greedy, then evil, then pathetic by turns---he truly wants to only be friends with Sen, the herioc child. His reaction is dependent on how the humans react to him. If you are greedy for his gold, he reacts with hunger and eats more and even swallows the greedy character. If you react with good intentions, such as Sen did, you might end up saving the day.

That's what that cards means to me...and I'm elaborating on the footnote by Riccardo.

firemaiden  10 Jan 2003
THANKS MARI THAT WAS TOTALLY FASCINATING!!

Did you just write all that off the top of your head? I was just thinking, now I REALLY want that book, but now I think the book I want is one you write!

Aerin  11 Jan 2003
Yes! Yes! Yes!

I came home from my week away, and what do I find but a beautiful Fey, packaged very well by Alida who I will order from again. I love getting parcels with brown paper and string.

It's my new most favourite deck. I found myself drawn into it straight away, it sings to my unconscious mind and engages my body and teases my intellect and gladdens my heart. I love, love, love it. I may have to buy another copy to keep pristine, and if I ever want to use it with others then I will need a third copy since otherwise I am likely to scowl at them if it looks like they are hurting my cards.

It is so joyful, and has an edge: it isn't cutesy yet it is very very engaging.

Now I want the book. And I adore the translation, somehow I feel closer to the deck because it hasn't been anglicised/ americanised: you can lose so much of the original intention in translation. I can't wait for the book...

Aerin

ps do you think that Judgement is an artist self-portrait? Anyone know?

pps I want to adopt the unicorn that the Empress is snuggling

firemaiden  11 Jan 2003
Aerin I want the book too, where are you going to order it from? Alida? I didn't think they had it, or at least not separately...tell me...I want to get ahold of the book too.

P.S. Share with us some more of your first impressions!!

Aerin  11 Jan 2003
firemaiden, I think I remember Riccardo posting that the book will probably be published separately in the New Year. As soon as I find out where to get it I will post.

Otherwise I will just get a deck and book set, can't have too many Feys...

Aerin

You can get the book and deck now- My set (with Froud's Faerie CD in the order) is somewhere between Pennsylvania and the New York border, according to UPS.

I am one to get the book with the set when I can, I figure that if I dont like the books or the referances (folklorist that I am, the first thing I do is check is the bibliography) dont jibe with me, then I dont have to use it.

On the other hand, if the companion book is well written, I wouldnt want to miss out on it. Just my take on it, anyhow.

RedWood  11 Jan 2003
Well I can get the Fey deck in a trade..but not the set...I dont really have the money to put out on the set..so I was thiknking deck for now..then book later

RiccardoLS  17 Jan 2003
At the moment I don't know how to get the book as a stand alone.
In a few days, I hope to have an answer.
Otherwise I will have to mail the books myself :)

Riccardo

RiccardoLS  20 Jan 2003
People interested in the Fey Tarot book only (without deck), may contact directly Lo Scarabeo ( info@loscarabeo.com )
I don't know (sorry) price or delivery conditions, but the book is available.

Jewel  28 Jan 2003
Well after shipping issues and all I finally was able to pick up my Tarot of the Fey yesterday and all I can say is WOW!!!! The deck is simply AWSOME. The meanings of the cards are captured so well while at the same time they have been freed of a lot of the esoterism. These are cards whose meanings you can feel. I would recommend this deck for both beginners and experienced tarot students and readers.

Riccardo, my hat is off to you Mara. I own (and have owned) several LoScarabeo decks, and I have to confess that although pretty they have seemed empty ... but this deck is just amazing. Going back to another thread about "Quality Decks" this deck definetly gets my vote as a "Quality Deck". The book is very good too. Informative, but not overwhelming. I love that the 3 main types of decks are addressed, and I love that Mara's sketches have been included with side notes. Just fabulous.

Also, I really liked the packaging ... the fact that cards actually have their own box is nice to see. I look forward to seeing more products like this come out of LoScarabeo ... any chance you can do that with the Mermaid Tarot? (I just had to ask!)

Maan  28 Jan 2003
So happy to see an other person that loves this deck.
And tell me how is the book? I SO want to have the book!
:)

Riccardo....why does lo scarabeo not reply to my emails? I'm trying to be patience...with no results as you can see ;)

IMHO it is one of the best companion books I have read (I am still reading card descriptions, but the bulk of it has been read). There is a section on how to use the book, an introduction which talks about the overal idea, concept and how Riccardo and Mara worked together. Then there is the intro to tarot section which is great ... informative and concise. In this section Riccardo talks about the 3 basic decks from which others are patterned (Marseilles, RWS and Thoth), and then introduces the reader to various European esoterists (chronologically) that have influenced tarot (Antoine Court de Gebelin, Etteilla, Elifas Levi, Paul Christian, William Westcott, Papus, Waite, Crowley, and Wirth) - Just a parragraph on each, enough so you know who they are and you can go on and research them out if you want more info.

Then he goes into divination, why the Fey were chosen, how they were designed and the esoteric structure. Then comes the section of the Majors and one on the minors. Then 3 new spreads (Riccardo thanks for not including the Celtic Cross.) The book is 156 pages long.

Riccardo's style is very conversational and relaxed which has made the book a very enjoyable read. Another highlight of this book is that throughout it are Mara's original sketches and some commentary about the drawings and ideas. Neat to see how some cards progressed, changed, evolved, etc. I hope you are able to get the book soon, I think you will really like it.

Maybe some of You can find this link interesting:
http://www.mara-aghem.com/

It's the virtual gallery of Mara (the Fey Tarot artist), as a painter.
Inside ( http://www.mara-aghem.com/eng/tarocchi.html ) you can see some scan of the chalices suit.
And this is a painting mara gave me, saying it was almost a portrait of me: http://www.mara-aghem.com/eng/gai12.htm

*ROFLMAO* you crack me up! Thanks for sharing! You must admit though, it is a really nice picture and the colors are great! ;)

truthsayer  28 Jan 2003
jewel,
i just knew you'd love this deck! didn't i tell you that you wouldn't be sorry? it's the best rating you've given a new deck in a while. does this help your deck burn out? }) sometimes i do get it right! :) do you agree that it's more of a sci-fi fantasy fey(from mars) than celtic or brian froud? i love scifi so that's a big compliment from me in case you wonder, richard.

faunabay  28 Jan 2003
OK, I've just been waiting to see what Jewel's opinion was!! I already knew truthsayer liked it!

So there you go, both people who I trust their opinions (because we see decks the same way usually) say it's a great deck!!

Alright I'll have it shortly and will give my thoughts as well! *ROFL*

And Riccardo - I love your portrait!! :D

ROFLMAO i was wondering when you'd see the fey our way! btw just so you'll know: jewel and i are a split vote on the quest deck. i like it ambivalently and she's not crazy about it. but i like the fey far better than the quest so i think it is a safe bet that you'll like it. the fey gets an A+++++++++++++ on quality of cards, art, imagination, and the book.
can't wait to see your thoughts on it! :)

The first five pictures have enlarged views, but the rest do not.

I can't wait until my order from Barnes and Noble comes in! Looks like a fabulous deck that could very well become one of my favorites! :)

Now RedWood, give us some credit ~giggles~ we have not done this is a while ... it was time *LOL*.

Truthsayer, I agree with you completly on your description of the Fey Tarot. It is definetly something 100% different from the Faery Oracles I so love, and it is a genuine tarot deck.

Does it help my "burn-out"? if you mean has it motivated me into going on an uncontrolled tarot purchasing spree the answer is no. I am still not inspired to expand the collection, but sooooooo pleased I have that deck. As you noted it is quality through and through. My next deck will probably be the Mermaid, but we both know the only reason I want it is because it is mermaids and my expectations of its usefulness (aside from being eye candy for me) are pretty low. But the Fey ... AHHHHHH ... that is one I plan to dive into like I did with the Cosmic Tribe.

As for the Quest ... Faunabay, I look forward to your comments on this deck. I don't hate it, I am just not all excited about it. The author/artist is in our forum now, so hopefully he can give me greater insight and inspiration to explore it further. Like I said in its thread, I do think it merits some study before condemning it *LOL*. But the Fey get first attention because I am totally excited about that deck.

Can some one please give me the ISBN from the book..not the set but just the book PLEASE :(

Great news for Europeans.

I've just had an e-mail from Argeo at Alida to say they now have

The book on its own at Euro 12.50
The book and deck set at Euro 29.95

He says he'll get them on the website ASAP along with some other Llewellyn sets.

My book is on it's way! (Along with another *cough* new deck while I was there, you do understand....)

Tarrochi della Luna.

It's the one with two versions of every major (majors only, but double majors).

Read the reviews, saw the pictures, couldn't resist. It can keep the Fey book company as they wing their way towards me.

Aerin :)

Maan  14 Feb 2003
I HAVE GOT THE BOOK

Thank you so much again Riccardo :* :*
I found the book this morning in my mail box..best valintine pressie ever!!!

Its such a good book. Its reads like a dream. I love the speach and the way he uses such images in his language. And its not a cut and dry read like most tarots books. There is so much humor in the book.
THis deck with its book together know, may even push my phantasmagoric from its favo deck spot.

( Maan dances away happy, happy happy.....this deck somehow really goes well with the music of Tori Amos, but that might just be me in a happy mood)

darwinia  16 Feb 2003
I received the deck and book set for Valentine's day. It's wonderful, better than I even imagined. It is clear from the notes and writing in the book that much time and effort was needed to bring this project to completion. I am impressed with the freshness of the interpretations, the freshness of the symbolism and imagery, and am very pleased that the effort will be rewarded with enthusiasm by those who are fortunate to buy it.

Very nice work and most deserving of success!

Judy
p.s. I love the fonts used in the book and on the titling on the cards.

Aerin  17 Feb 2003
Hurrah! (dances jig)

I got the book from Alida this morning.

It's wonderful :)

Khatruman  20 Feb 2003
Just became another Fey tarot convert. I ordered it through Amazon's web site at $21, cheaper than the regular $29 price.

I was hesitant about this deck, being a staunch supporter of Froud's Faeries' Oracle and the Fairy Ring Oracle, as too much a cutsey fairy deck. freesiaskye has convinced me otherwise...smiles....

Will tell you when I get it! :D

RedWood  20 Feb 2003
My set will be on its way soon...::does happy dance:: (i also have faeries oracle, and fairy ring oracle on the way too..gotta love trading and good friends)

Maan  21 Feb 2003
Thats great Redwood
Its such a great great great deck. I hope you will like it !

Jewel  21 Feb 2003
Congrats to Khat and RedWood!

Khat I think you will like the deck a lot. It has depth and has a fresh perspective. I am very impressed with it. The book is also good. It is a tarot deck and cannot be compared to any of the Faerie Oracles.

RedWood ... I had no clue you did not have the Froud Oracle ~gasps~ ... hope you come visit our study group once you get it :)

lunalafey  21 Feb 2003
after 7 months of waiting....the FEY is now in my possesion....WONDERFUL.....I really like the format the book has, breaking down the card into images, meaning, advanced meaning and symbols....good for beginners.. One of the claims is that it's good for beginners...though for the newbie that reads this....look for other spreads to work with more so than the ones in the book....
I'm going to have fun with this deck....One of my co-workers saw it and was quite taken....she wants one too....hehehe....WEEEEE:TMOON

Hummingbird  21 Feb 2003
Still waiting for mine....

RedWood  21 Feb 2003
I feel ya hummingbird lol..But thats ok..i am patient...I won it from Tarotgarden...

Jewell..I had the faeries oracle months and months ago..but i did not use them..and felt bad..so i traded them off..I think they were 'meant' for that trade...Anyway...I am very happy to be getting them back soon..COurse I hope i am not overwhelmed with Faery decks!

Hedera  22 Feb 2003
After a *long* wait (this is a deck that seems to like keeping people waiting) I finally got the Fey Yesterday.
And, ofcourse, I *looooove* it! It feels very strong an clear, unafraid to tell unwelcome truths, but overall very positive in outlook. I'm not a big anime-fan (don't dislike it, either), but I am a big sf-fan, and I agree with someone on this thread (sorry, it slipped my mind who it was) that said it feels as if these are sf-fey.
They are wonderful, absolutely gorgeous images!
I like the book a lot, too, although it has been translated rather badly, which surprised me (the translator's names sounded native English- speakerish). I don't really mind, it feels as if I'm talking in English with a friend from Italy.
I've read the general chapters but more or less skimmed the cards-part, because I want to bond with the deck first and get my own ideas about the card meanings.

I did have trouble understanding the spreads in the back, probably because it lost something in translation. The idea of the Fey Child spread was clear enough, but I had trouble understanding what the card positions of the other spreads were supposed to mean, especially the Dream, Joy, Magic spread.
Has anyone here tried this spread yet? Perhaps you could clarify it for me?

The card I love best so far is the three of Swords - really, really beautiful. I prefer my 3 of swords to be quite similar to the RWS version, but I think this one is a beautiful take on the idea. One of the phrases in the book for this card is 'To learn pain' , which sums up the idea I've always had about this card.
This is definately my favourite 3 of Swords of all the decks I own, and probably one of my favourite cards ever!

I'm toying with the idea of making a 78-item list: favourite fool out of all my decks, favourite magician, etc. Unfortunately, my favourite star is in a deck I don't (yet) own.

I did a new deck spread today, very interesting. I'll post it here later tonight or tomorrow - have to go and watch "Taken" on the BBC now (like a proper sf-fan). I'll probably keep my Fey clutched in my hand troughout. I feel like hugging this deck!!

:) Hedera.

What a wonderful idea about the favorite card listing. The Fey Tarot Star is my favorite Star card ever! It's soooo beautiful. Well I hope you find your favorite Star someday! I love my deck too and sleep with it close by.

The book was written well though with some awkward word choices, I could understand it.

The spread that I had trouble with is the Mother/Father one, though I shall reread it soon. I rather liked the 6 Star spread and haven't tried the Dream/Magic/Joy yet.

Happy tarot-ing! :)

darwinia  22 Feb 2003
I did a comparative study today looking at each card of the Fey with the Osho Zen deck. WOW, so many of them seem to fit, not only because the rainbow colouring is similar but because the ideas are similar.

I immediately pulled out about 22 cards that echoed each other wonderfully. Some of the Fey cards that I originally found obscure came alive next to their partners in the Osho Zen Tarot.

So I think I found the perfect companion deck for the Fey. Oh, and as far as The Stars card in the Fey, it is also one of my favourite Star cards. You should see it next to the Silence card in the Osho Zen. It also works well with The Stars card in the Tarot of the III Millennium.

Those of you who have both the Fey and the Osho Zen decks might enjoy the exercise.

Also, I just ordered i Tarocchi Celtici by Laura Tuan because it has some fey on it and some beautiful birds. The cards and book are in Italian, but learning what it means will be another interesting connective exercise with these cards. If I can't use it with the Fey Tarot, I'm betting it might work well with the Faeries Oracle by Froud.

Hedera  23 Feb 2003
Hi Kirali ;)

I do know what my favourite Star is, it's just in a deck I don't own yet. It;s the one from the Hudes tarot.

How did the 6 star spread you did work out? If it;s interesting, maybe you could post it in the Readings section!

:) Hedera.

Maan  23 Feb 2003
I'm so happy to see you like this deck too Hedera.
I'm havent come to that three card spread your are talking about yet but i will be there very soon and then i may give it a try.

I actually don't notice a bad trancelation. The tekst feels like a poem most of the times. But i have only read the majors and a little part of the minors.

Khatruman  27 Feb 2003
I know this post would better serve as a private message to Ricardo, but seems that you have it set not to receive e-mails or PMs.

I ordered the Fey through Amazon, but it is listed as "Not yet released" with no other information about its release. Now, I know it is available, as all of you have it, so what is the deal with Amazon. If Ricardo has some info on this I would love to know

Thanks.

RiccardoLS  27 Feb 2003
I really don't know.

LS distribute to Llewellyn. And Llewellyn should sell to Amazon.
My best guess is that the saleperson that deals with Amazon sent a wrong date on a fax and no one noticed :(((

You should try contact LL directly. I may drop a message as well, but I don't know really.

RedWood  07 Mar 2003
I got it!! have not worked with it yet....I like the book..with the sketch drawings..really adds to it! the main thing i am really disppointed in...is the borders...It is a shame they had to have borders around the whole deck..I really think..this deck would POP if the side borders were not there.

faunabay  07 Mar 2003
I was actually pleased with the borders on the Fey!
With the other Lo Scarabeo decks I've had in the past the borders were larger and the type for the different languages seemed much more prominent!! Or at least that's the way I remember them. So all in all I'm very pleased with the way the Fey turned out! :*
But I do have to agree with RedWood that EVERY deck would be much better without any borders at all! *ROFL*

RedWood  07 Mar 2003
I dont have many lo scarebo decks..the other i have is durere..I like the border on durer...

well some decks i do like borders..some dont...course I dont not like it enough..to take a knife to it..Like ravenwing does to his decks!! LOL

Great deck!
Smells bad, though. I think it's from the ink or the laminate. Won't be able to use it until I can give it a good airing. Got to wait until the kiddie's in school on Monday or she'll be playing with it.
This is my first Lo Scarabeo deck. Do they all smell like this?

Many thanks to Tarot Garden for their excellent service!

Heya Hedera :)
Ah that's wonderful about your favorite star in Hudes. I'll have to check out the online scans of that deck.

The 6 star spread didn't really tell me anything interesting, it talked about my sister when I did the spread a month ago, but now she is haing a lot of problems with an abusive (verbal so far that I know of) boyfriend.

I do want to post a relationship spread pertaining to them. I just might.

Sorry I didn't answer sooner!
Anyway the 6 Star spread seems similar like one of the moon spreads that I have copied down in my notes. I think you might be able to see them in the Tarot Spread section.

edit: Woof, my Fey deck smelled too so I had to air it out for a while and waft incense near it. It's been a month and it smells okay now. I don't think it's just LS, my Tarot of a Moon Garden (us games) smelled the same way.

Ravenswing  09 Mar 2003
Khatruman--

 Texas Chainsaw?? }) I want to remove boarders, not fingers :D !!! Consider: only a few artists include boarder concepts in the original image. And I don't usually like framing my paintings...

NOTICE: Contrary to popular belief (hey Red-yeah, you  LOL!! ), I don't remove them all... But I do hope that if/when the deck I'm working on get published, I can keep any boarder off my cards :joke:

Enough defense. I'm here cause I got this deck. Finally. I resisted for as long as I could-- I didn't want any new decks while I was still working on mine. But one only has so much strength...

The package from Amazon arrived yesterday morning. I opened it up and read all the book except the card descriptions. A very good read. I took the cards out of the box, removed the wrapper. ( I love that new card smell :) May be weird;I like the smell of turpintine too :D ) Then I did one of the hardest things I've done in a while-- I put the cards back in their box without looking at them. I had decided before getting the deck to spend the night with them under my pillow (something I do with decks I'm working with) before going through this deck. From all that had been said about this one, i wanted that connection before interacting with the cards individually.

So this morning, after breakfast and a bit of studio work, I took out the deck and sat at my altar. Well, it's sort of an altar; I guess it's more of a quiet contemplative corner complete with candles of various types.

Now I know how Alice may have felt. After dropping down a hole to a Wonderland, I discovered a stack of cards labeled: READ ME.

(I have to admit, my major use for tarot isn't reading per se. But this deck has captured me. Even the boarder works in nicely (!!!) and the international titling seems almost invisible-- quite an accomplishment.)

After going through the deck one by one, then again, a bit slower, I did a new deck relationship reading. I shuffled and riffled and bridged again and again... then fanned out the deck and pulled out four cards.

Well...

first card-- Queen of Chalises

the Queen of Chalises is the card that makes a deck for me. It's always been that way. and I've recently discovered that, according to Mary Greer's 'Tarot for YourSelf', it's my personal potential card... (I'm a cancerian)

second card-- Ten of Chalises

okay..

third card-- Six of Chalises

oh wow...

fourth card (first piece of advise)-- Knight of Chalises

Hmmm....

Nothin' but cups

Can anyone give me their feedback on this one? I have my thoughts-- excuse me, I think I mean my feelings-- on this, but I'd like someone who can step back from this...

I think (ahem... feel) I've found a real good deck here

Happy Sunday

Yeah!!!! I got the Fey yesterday!!! (Special thumbs up to Tarot Garden for wonderful service.) So far I have only had time to look through the cards a few times. My 11 year old daughter went nuts over them!!!! I can't wait to really dive into this deck and book.

Just got the Fey deck today! :) (with book). I can't WAIT to start working with it! :) I LOVE it! I know I say this about other decks I've aquired recently (The Quest and Oracle Tarot) but I really mean it with this deck when I say that THIS one is THE one for me. :) I love fairies and I believe they will help me with my readings using this deck. :)

I have a question: As I posted yesterday, I finally got the Fey tarot and have the regular book that comes with it (the kit). However, the Little White Book didnt come with the cards and I am hoping I can get a hold of a copy. How can I go about doing that?

Khatruman  25 Mar 2003
Hi sunflowr... I am not sure if there is a LWB, but if there is one Lo Scarabeo is wonderful at getting them for you. Just go to their website (sorry, but I don't know the exact URL right now) and find an e-mail address. I had the Celtic deck with a German LWB and they sent me a pdf file for the LWB (do you have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer? If not, it is a free program so it is easy to obtain)

Hope this helps.

Maan  25 Mar 2003
I don;t know how to get it..Kathurmans idea sounds great but i can tell you that there is a little white book. I got it with non set fey deck.

coldsuns  25 Mar 2003
I like that deck..but how many cards are there inside? Is it English Version?

firemaiden  25 Mar 2003
visit www.loscarabeo.com and send an email to Riccardo Minetti, he will send the LWB to you. (pretty sure, right Riccardo?)

IN answer to cold suns, it is a tarot deck. (78 cards), the book is in english, and the cards (and LWB) are multi-lingual.

i wish it was only that for me, i don't even own a copy of the book :(

i hope there's a way you can get it!!! if it wouldn't be possible maybe i can scan it and send it by e-mail to you...

RiccardoLS  25 Mar 2003
mail me at: riccardo@loscarabeo.com
and I will pdf the booklet :)

Demonesse  25 Mar 2003
The Fey really is beautiful, from the scans I've seen of it, and it presents a lot of the cards' meanings in a very unique way - my favourite is the charming Death (which is actually very grim when you envision yourself as a pawn on that cute chessboard). It definitely deserves its own study group. Want to trade one of your Feys for some bags, Riccardo? Lol ;)

Thanks, and to Riccardo. :) However, can I print out a PDF file? I'm not very familiar with this format. Yes I do have Acrobat Reader tho. But see, the main reason I would want the LWB is to take with me outside to do readings and not carry the regular book around. So, I am hoping for a hard copy. If I mail the company, would they send me one?

Demonesse  25 Mar 2003
Yes, you can print out a PDF file, except that you can't edit it, I think.

lunalafey  27 Mar 2003
It's off to an odd start...but it's getting there. Fey at play, what could one expect.
7 of Swords is the Fey for thought....(for now)
Does anyone have a handle on the Fey layouts?
Could you post in the SG spreads thread? I need help with them. (never had a problem with spreads before, darn fey)...
and thanks again Riccardo

The Yeah got the Fey !! thread was originally posted on 06 Dec 2002 in the Tarot Decks board, and is now archived in the Forum Library. Read the active threads in Tarot Decks, or read more archived threads.
