Disappointed about the Dragon Tarot

You all LIED to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;) I heard so many good things about this deck, so many people recommended it... So I finally buy it after hearing 2 yar's worth of 'Oh the Dragon Tarot is great' and get it home only to fid it's really quite bad.

Don't get me wrong, I love Proacownik's artwork, and always have, but he's not at his best in this deck, which is really only an art deck. The images are just like a normal Tarot deck, but less readable, with less symbols, and instead of people, there are just loadsa dragon with weird noses...

I am very disappointed. Is it just me though, or does anybody else find this deck a litle... well... rubbish?

I don't have that one. I have the Celtic Dragon Tarot deck though and that one is Fabulous!! Very intuitive. If you want a dragon deck, I suggest the Celtic Dragon. I'm not the only one here who loves that deck :)

faunabay  27 Jan 2003
I'm with you Kiama! I like the artwork but couldn't read with it at all. So I just traded it to RedWood! :D

Aerin  27 Jan 2003
I couldn't read with it easily either. But it is very pretty indeed and I love the dragons. It was my second ever deck.

It was the only deck I had with me on hol. when I started Tarot for Yourself, and I was surprised by how well the entering-the-card stuff went and how much I got out of it.

Talking with Dragons.

Sounds like the Cat People Tarot, pretty but can't read worth a darn with it.

Every deck is subjective though. Hopefully you checked out the art on the internet first? Well, at the very least you've got a deck to trade for something else you want.

Actually, I think that the Lord of the Rings Tarot wasn't his best work.

Actually, I like the LOTR deck he designed ...I'm not much into dragons, I guess!

I have the Celtic Dragon Tarot in Czech, if anyone can read that!

violinlily  27 Jan 2003
I agree w/ you guys, very pretty deck, but might be up there on the "cosmic list of the decks that deserve the same fate as the LWB". jk, I don't think that it's that bad, but had to say it.

uhh, tarotbear, I have to brush up on my czech (working on french german and italian at the moment)... gimme a few years, and I'll get back to you on that, lol.

Celtic_Dragon  28 Jan 2003
The dragon tarot was my very first tarot deck and I thought it was going to be fabulous and well yea, I was pretty disapointed but it's still my first tarot deck so there's that sentimental thing to it. I'm hoping to trade it in for the celtic dragon deck.

but I didn't lie to you b/c I've never referred that deck, sorry about what happened though. Wait a while, see if you don't run into someone who would love that deck. Nothing's more satisfying than seeing someone happy with something that just didn't work for you.

Now, now.

I still love the dragons. It has the astrological symbols on the cards for those that are into that sort of thing. And I like the Hanged Dragon, he looks kind of snoozy.

Oh - almost forgot - I had some success with it for storytelling i.e yanking a few cards out and telling a story with them.

But then I do like dragons...although I never liked the look of the Celtic Dragon artwork for whatever reason.

Awwww... sorry Kiama... that's a real shame... but it couldn't have been me... I always recommend the Röhrig Tarot! ;) Still, I like mine (the Dragon Tarot that is) and have had a couple of good readings with it. I personally don't really find it any more difficult than any other RWS clone. I'd say, if you try it again later on and still don't like it... use it for trade as suggested by Celtic_Dragon & HudsonGray. Come to think of it, my sister really liked my Dragon Tarot, though I didn't want to part with it just yet.... hmmmm.....

Kiama  28 Jan 2003
I guess the problem really is not with the deck, but with me... I've spent a yar and a half collecting decks, and have around 110 of them, and thus have come across some pretty amazing decks! I therefore have very high expectations when it comes to decks, and anything that is less than wonderful is bleaurgh...

I will try and read with it, see if I can se it at all, but I odubt it, cuz I read intuitively, and this deck has not yet 'spoken' to me in that way... The images just don't have much meaning in them that I can relate to.

It's staying in my collection though... I have a thing for keeping all my decks, even if I can't use them!

gosh, Aerin, I was kidding!! :)
I never said I didn't like it, just that it wasn't the greatest. There are good and bad things about every deck, and some people like the Dragon deck more than others.

Kiama I can soooooo relate to what you just said. I have been afraid that someone had let out an airborne cure for tarotholism early this year as I was finding every deck that came through my hands lacking. Personally I like the artwork of the Dragon Tarot, and I love the Death card ... however that is another beautiful deck that I would love to put on display under glass. You know you can always use those gorgeous decks to decorate Kiama!

The dragons were getting upset ;) so I had to defend them. After all, don't want them setting fire to my Fey in a fit of jealous rage now, do I?

Okay, I just HAVE to ask - how come you have the deck in Czech? We have a great shop here in Prague with a good range of cards and the prices are not bad - only small snag for me is that they are sometimes in Czech (and my Czech is still pretty basic). I thought only I had this problem!?

tarotbear  29 Jan 2003
Yes, I have the Celtic Dragon Tarot in Czech ( Well the book and the card titles are in czech "Tarot Keltskych Draku"), and a divinatory deck titled " Vykladaci Karty" in German and Czech. Also, a Majors-only Praga Mystica tarot. My friend bought them in Prague, I think, while he was the accompanist for a visiting choral group. He is going to Sweden this year - so I wonder what he'll bring back this time?

VGimlet  01 Feb 2003
Wasn't me either Kiama ;)

I know a lot of people who love both these decks but they just don't do it for me, either. I was hoping to love them, and they just didn't come close to capturing the essence of dragons I have in my mind. My sister has always liked them very much, and I was hoping to find a great deck to read for her with each of them, but I haven't been able to connect. Ah well.
Of course, I would never get rid of them, oh NO,

WolfSpirit  08 Feb 2003
Don't be too tough on the dragons, they have to compete with 110 decks !!
I must say though, I really like dragons and have the dragon tarot and the celtic dragon, but I don't use them for readings.

I do think the dragon tarot is great though, I love the artwork and the sense of humour it has: the hierophant acting as a puppeteer...the hanging dragon sliding down his tree...
To me, the dragon tarot has a bit of a cartoon character.
