Advice on RSW clone

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 08 Feb 2003, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Aoife  08 Feb 2003
I want to buy another RSW-inspired deck. In this category I currently have RSW [obviously!], Hudes [which i love and is my 'working' deck] and Mythic [which i bought a couple of years ago when re-reading robert graves "the greek myths" ] but I've never really got on with it as a tarot deck.

I'd like something different but not with too much Egyptian imagery.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Eve

PS. I've noticed the RSW/RWS Freudian slip - it's interesting because I do credit Pamela C-S with more than Waite.

Trogon  08 Feb 2003
Hi Eve,

I would highly recommend the Spiral Tarot as a very good Rider-Waite based deck. The images are different and fresh, so can give you a different outlook, but the meanings are not so different from the RW to be difficult to learn.

The Goddess Tarot is another deck which appears to be primarily RW based. Again, the meanings seem to coincide with those for the RW deck so there shouldn't be any steep learning curve. This appears to be a very female oriented deck and I tend to interpret it a little more lightly than I do some others. Meaning, it doesn't seem to be as heavy, or dark, as some others.

My other recommendation is, I guess, more Thoth based than RW... that would be the Röhrig Tarot. It's images are, to me, more modern and evoke some different feelings. Again, the meanings on most of the cards are not far removed from the Rider-Waite, though many seem to present a different outlook on the same things. It is perhaps my most favorite deck. Though the images in this deck are not for everyone, it might be worth taking a good look at.

Hope this has been of some assistance...

Aquarian.
Stern, serious and still. Stylish, beautiful but with no excesses.
SIMPLE RIDER WAITE ARTISTIC RIELABORATION.
If you want a classic that will help you grow and get better without much metaphysical strayings...

Spiral.
Lots of myths, and great cards reworked rom R-W. Great for everyone. Beautiful minors, striking courts and beautiful minors. I have yet to find a flaw in this deck - maybe the blue border :P
A Gentle mythologic touch peeking at archetypes.

World Spirit.
Pagan, magickal, dark and fascinating, great cards re-done here as well. Beautiful iagery too. colourful and voo-doo like. (LOL)
If you want something funny, with treasures to be discovered in each card and an underlying magickal feeling...

jema  08 Feb 2003
why not try something a bit more light-hearted? like the Halloween tarot that is really a very good clone.

another one that i like (but don't use that much due to me having too many decks) is the Morgan Greer. it is in earth-tones without any frames.

but of course my main recommendation will echo those above here. The Spiral Tarot is a real gem of a deck. such a treat to work with.

firemaiden  08 Feb 2003
HI Aoife. Definitely the Spriral, really beautiful art work and very well thought out. Plus then we can think through it together! This is my favorite deck for attempting to do readings.

Also, as you have probably noticed I am going bananas about the Secret Tarot, and boring everyone to death with my harpings. It is not simply a "clone" of the RWS, but a darker, intenser interpretation, it also brings out some aspects of the Marseilles decks when the RWS interpretation seemed weaker (i.e. the lovers card -- returned to meaning "choice" by putting two lovers to choose from.), and I find, it includes all the important elements from RWS, the improvements and clarifications integrated in the Spiral, and then adds more: I am moving the rest of this post to the Secret Tarot thread.

edited to say: Aoife, this is actually a vote for the Spiral!

Maan  08 Feb 2003
I would go for the spiral ist a great great deck.
But the phantasmagoric is RWS based aswel and that deck is just SO cool! I know its not for every one but i just need to try every once in a while ;)

Sulis  08 Feb 2003
Spiral or World Spirit, I would go for World Spirit but I`m biased as it`s my favorite deck. Spiral is a lovely deck and very small, a good one for putting in your bag. I personally have trouble getting on with the purple borders and red boxes at the bottom of each card as I think they ruin the effect of the gorgeous artwork.
Pollux has already said everything I could say about the World Spirit - it`s gorgeous.

truthsayer  08 Feb 2003
i would suggest the hanson roberts or the universal waite-same artist. the images and colors are easier on the eye than rws. the zerner farber is a nice deck. the enchanted is a larger version of the same deck. i really like the beginner's tarot by sharman-burke caselli, morgan-greer, and aquarian. a recent personal favorite is the lo scarebeo fey. i think it could be used by any level of tarot exprience. the nigel jackson is also one to consider. even though the rohrig is more thoth based i have to agree that this one is absolutely stunning.

rota  08 Feb 2003
You might also consider the Alchemical Tarot. The slight renamings are easy to overcome. The artwork, certainly not Egyptian, has a feel reminiscent of medieval engravings, more obviously hermetic than RWS.

And of course modesty forbids mentioning (ahem) my own Ator Tarot.

Scorpion  09 Feb 2003
I cast my vote in favour of the Spiral if you want an RWS clone. The majors are stunning and the minors and courts are lovely, although a little sketchier than the majors. If you can find the book that goes with it it's worth having as it goes into great detail on the majors.

felicityk  09 Feb 2003
The Hanson-Roberts Tarot is my favorite RWS-inspired deck, and the closest I have to the RWS imagery in my collection.

I don't have the Morgan-Greer, but it's pretty close as well, and has a very different look.

By the way, you can see these decks (and several others) in their entirety at:

One of my favourites (World Spirit) has already been mentioned several times here.
Another good clone is the Victoria Regina. The book that comes with it is great, too!

:) Hedera.

Phoenix  09 Feb 2003
You could see if you can find this one: It is a deck and book set called "The Beginner's Guide To Tarot" by Juliet Sharman-Burke. It is a really nice deck, which is very much Rider-Waite based.

Thank you, thank you! ~lol~
The consensus seems to be the Spiral and...... there's a deck in a local shop! But..... it's almost double what I'd pay at Amazon. And if I spend more than £39 at Amazon I get free carriage [and solandia gets a %age - or is that only with .com and not .co.uk?]. But it means I've got to wait 4-6 weeks and I'm not much good with delayed gratification.

But if I go with Amazon, that means I could also have World Spirit and Victoria Regina or maybe the Secret Tarot [firemaiden, you're so convincing!]. But..... I still can't make my mind up between VR and Ship of Fools - but no one here seems to be talking about Ship of Fools. Also, do I need to buy the sets rather than just the decks for Spiral and Secret Tarots?

Decisions, decisions....

At risk of testing your patience with me too far - help me spend my money [the family can survive on toast and beans for a month!] Looks like Spiral is decided but ..... VR -v- Ship of Fools..... and World Spirit -v- Secret?

Now don't say 'buy them all' - I've got to be able to pay for the electicity to power the computer to keep me in touch with all you lovely people here!

Of course you do realise I don't HAVE to have any of these decks. I can do perfectly well without! I'm not a taroholic!

Eve ~ hands shaking at the thought of doing without ~

Pollux  10 Feb 2003
Well, Victoria Regina sounds nice.
But why not GILL??? :D *LOL*

Maybe, if you can't decide for decks you could get books to get to the sum?

*frantically searching web pages*:

Set? What set? Is there a deck & book set for the Secret Tarots? Ieks! If there is, I don't have the book! :D

Aoife, I think world spirit would be, out of those four, probably the best choice. It is a RWS clone, but not a completely literal clone. It presents the same ideas in different ways. That way, you can learn to 'see' the idea in the card in a more personal way, rather than just following the RWS symbolism. Also, it makes you actually *look* at the cards, searching for differences and similarities with RWS, which is a good way to start noticing the stuff that is meaningful to *you*.

But I'm afraid all the other options are really good decks, too... :D

Hedera, there are several decks titled the Secret Tarots. The one that has the book is the Secret Tarots(previously the Renaissance Tarot) by Jane Lyle. It is only sold as a deck/book set.

Hope this helps.

truthsayer  10 Feb 2003
if i had to choose from only the VR, spiral, gill, WS, and SoF...if you don't mind black and white, my first choice would be the victoria regina. second world spirit, third spiral, and fourth the gill. i don't find the ship of fools appealing in the least.

Sulis  11 Feb 2003
Definately World Spirit - and the little white book is actually a pocket sized real book which is just the right size to keep with the deck (if you have a bag for your deck) - convinced yet- or if you`re feeling a bit flush you could go with Amazon and get the lot - go on you know you want to *LOL*

The Fey.

I'm still in love with it. And it reads wonderfully well.

*wipes sweat off forehead*

Phew!
Thank you, Phoenix!
I was thinking about the LS one.
Then again - is the Jane Lyle one worth having? The only thing I love more than a deck is a deck/book set...:D

Phoenix  11 Feb 2003
In my opinion, yes, it is. The images are very appealing, and there is a lot of symbolism in the majors.

Here is a link to some pics of it:

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/renaissance2/index.html

The book is very well written as well.

Aoife, the book for the Scarabeo Secret Tarot is not available yet, it won't be available until you and I write it.:D I don't have the book to the Spiral. I have heard it is interesting for the majors, but the LWB is pretty thorough, plus the pictures speak for themselves.

Minos  12 Feb 2003
Sacred Rose is a nice one. It brings over most of the RWS symbolism, but has its own very unique style of art:

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/sacredrose/index.html

Palladini is rather nice, too, and quite close to Waite.

Also, although every bone of my Thoth-loving body protests against it, the Fey tarot is absolutely lovely, looks like it gives great readings, and I'm probably gonna buy it myself.

*sigh*

Oh do, do: you know you want to.

I'm getting a second Fey so that I don't have to worry about wearing out my first one *whistles nonchalantly*

It is so easy to read if you know the RWC and it also has little twists on each card that make it fresh.

Aoife  21 Feb 2003
I'm so sorry - I'm getting terribly forgetful! I forgot to come back to say what I eventually chose:
Victoria Regina
Osho Zen [i know i said i wanted an rws clone, but....]
Celtic Wisdom [just couldn't resist]
Rachel Pollack's Major and Minor Arcana books for Haindl deck [i love it but i need the extra help]

I bought the Spiral deck retail - but I wish I'd waited to buy the set! That'll teach me!

I really want Shining Tribe but as Aerin said elsewhere it's very expensive here.

I'm going to wait for Amazon.co.uk to get the Fey deck and book set then order.

But meanwhile I also want The Stone Tarot......

I'm beyond all hope! So I've given up fighting it...... I'm a fully fledged taroholic, I do believe........ and I'm enjoying every minute of it!!!!!

Since no one else has mentioned it I must bring up the recommendation for the Robin Wood and the book that goes with the deck. The Fey is a fabulous choice as well. It is Raider Waite based and brings a wonderful new perspective.

Now if you are looking for a real clone, the I would recommend the Universal Waite or the Illuminated Tarot. These are true clones.

Definitely! This is a great deck for beginners especially! :) I am still considering myself a beginner as I have never really taken the time to sit down and focus on a tarot deck and really LEARN. I plan on doing that, with this deck. It's easier to read, IMO, than with RW. The imagery is simple yet beautiful. Nice colors. :) You should be able to find this deck and book set at any Borders or Barnes and Noble.. or they can order it for you.
