Vision Quest arrived

I got the Vision Quest tarot a couple of days ago, my dad`s been very ill and I couldn`t have got a nicer delivery to cheer me up. I really like it. I haven`t done any actual readings with it yet, as it`s more Thoth based than RWS it`ll take a bit of study but I`m finding that the Thoth style meanings on both this and the Cosmic Tribe which I recently aquired are really `gelling` with me. I think I may even prefer them to the RWS style. This seems like a very positive deck, I particularly like the renaming of the more `scary` cards:
The Devil becomes Torment
The Tower becomes Chaos
Death becomes Transformation and
The Hanged man becomes Vision Quest
Despite my usual aversion to LWBs (thanks to Umbrae *lol*) this one is very helpful and well written.
Thankyou to all of you who advised me ot get this deck, I think it`s going to become a favorite.

Love and light

Crystalmynx,

I have been going back and forth over purchasing this deck. I have a strong affinity towards the Native American Culture and have wanted to add a Native American deck to my collection, but I haven't found one that appeals to me. I have seen the pictures here and at Passages, but it's not enough.

I am still fairly new to Tarot and I was wondering if you would mind explaining a little more what you mean by more like the Thoth. I don't own the Thoth deck and don't know much about it. I learned with the RWD. Do you think I would have a problem with these cards?

I appreciate your feedback.

Hi,
When I say that this deck is Thoth based I mean that most of the menaings follow the Thoth meanings as opposed to the RWS meanings, for example the 2 of Earth (pentacles) is titled `change` and the 2 of air (swords) is titled `inner peace`. All of the cards have a key word to convey the meanings a la Thoth. I would also say that the minors, although they have images on them and aren`t pips they`re not fully illustrated scenes like the RWS deck. The images on the minors do convey the card meanings very well. I think that the word I`m looking for to describe them is `moody`. This deck , although not based on RWS would be easy enough to read. I`m most familiar myself with the RWS style but am finding myself increasingly drawn to Thoth style decks.
Hope that`s helped a bit.

Love and light

Me too. I learned to read with RWS and I have RWS-clones that I love for the art work, but I am more and more questioning the meanings of the RWS: if I look at numerological meaning of a card and the meaning of the suit I don't necessarily come up with the meaning the RWS deck gives. Especially the swords seem to get a lot of negative meanings they can have but don't always have.

Mimers:
if you are new to tarot it is probably easier for the moment to stick with RWS-clones. Depends on how far you are with tarot I guess, I started with RWS and RWS clones and stuck with that meaning, now that I have decks with different meanings I find this easier as there are more possibilities to choose from, but when I began that would have been too confusing.
But IMO you can always try this deck, save it for later if it gets confusing now. The little book that comes with the deck is very good, it has just as much info as the big books that come with the boxed sets but it does not have that space-consuming lay-out like larger-than-life pictures of the cards. Also the cards all have a key-word on them so that makes it easier as well. If you are really drawn to this deck I would just get it if I were you !

i guess i need to get out my thoth and vision quest to look for the similarities. i haven't read with VQ for a few monthes but i read with it like i would the deck style i'm most comfortable with-the rws. however, i used the thoth for a long time, too. could be why i don't really differentiate between the styles.

what i like most about the VQ is it's quiet beauty. it's a deck i could use with most ppl w/o worrying if the deck bothered the querent.

It is done. I bought it. I couldn't help it. I am supposed to be saving money for a trip. Oh well.

These are my thoughts exactly. I think that I still prefer in my heart of hearts to see the minors illustrated in full scenes but the meanings attributed to the cards in Thoth style decks just seem to fit better somehow.

Oh and Mimers well done. I think that that officially classifies you as a tarothollic *LOL* }) }) })

Thank you CrystalMynx, I will wear my new title with pride. I thought about it and I bought my first deck in July, so I have adveraged 1 deck per month.

Anyway, I am going to have to check out the threads in the study group on thoth to see what you are all talking about with these differences in the Pips.

Thank you all for your feed back.

I have so much to say I don't know where to begin.

If I sound a little over excited, bear with me. I only started this past summer and am still quite new. I went ahead and bought the Vision Quest deck and I am so pleased. I am feeling very inspired by this deck. I have always been intrigued by the Native American culture. There were many where I live at one time and I have always gone to museams and Native American festivals in the area. I also had a past life as a Native American. Actually it was a very hard, lonely life. I had been captured by another tribe and was treated worse than the dogs. What little I had was given to me out of pitty.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I almost bought the Ancestral Path tarot. I actually put the order in at Amazon. That night I was laying in bed and something just told me don't get it. I canceled the order the next morning. Then I noticed this thread. I was meant to have this deck.

I also have more to share, but it doesn't really fit here in this thread. Go check out the new deck spread I did in the readings section. The cards have been telling me some very strong messeges lately.

Thanks again, my friends!
Mimers :) I have a feeling I will be catching some joys in life!

Is this the one that has the misprint on all of the Threes? Instead of saying "Three" they say "Tree?" Or has there been a new printing with the error (or charming quirk, according to some) corrected?

Yes Kyrielle this deck was originally printed with a misprint on the `three` cards. My new deck has no misprints so they must have sorted it out.
