I just picked up a new copy of The Renaissance Tarot by Jane Lyle & Helen Jones at my local Half-Price Book store for $10. It's a boxed set with a 192 page book that at first glance seems like a pretty good book of meanings and spreads. The title of this deck has been changed to the Secret Tarot: Renaissance Symbols of Science, Magic and Myth, probably to avoid confusion with other decks, so the old title is out of print and being sold at a discount. I was curious and it seems as if the deck is also available from online book stores at $10 or less. This deck and book are a great buy at this price.

Rose, that's an excellent price for the set. I like this deck a lot. At first I was disappointed in the artwork, but it grew on me and now I find it quite charming -- I think that the deck is very readable, too. Enjoy!

Hi all,
Is this the same deck and book that has been re-issued as The Secret Tarot?

Hi Raeanne,
Yes, it's the same deck that's been re-issued as the Secret Tarot by Jane Lyle. The half-price bookstore had a ton of copies at $10 each and if you do a search at amazon.com for Renaissance Tarot--it shows several booksellers selling new copies for as low as $5 a copy + shipping.

My thoughts about this deck is like a pingpong game! First I think I like it, then I don't, then I do! (from the pics online, don't have the deck).
I may just have to go ahead and get this to really see, looks very interesting and different.
I think I am a sponge today with these deck review posts!

Faerie Lin,
I have over 200 decks and this was a deck I rejected when I first knew of its existence. Truthfully, many of the decks I own were bought because I found them at bargain prices. My best deals occurred when US games stopped carrying a lot of Italian imports, including Lo Scarabeo and dumped their inventory in the remainder book stores-I think that's when I actually became "a collector." The artwork on the Renaissance tarot is different than the other decks I own. I really like the major arcana. The pips are only minimally illustrated (although I think they do a pretty good job of conveying their meaning), which for me can be a plus. The court cards are pretty-they're all merpersons, but very similar to each other. They're clever though-the tails of the pentacles are made of leaves, cups' tails have fish scales, swords' tails have feathers, and the tails of the wands are made of flames. The book seems well written. I didn't expect much from this deck, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Rose, where is this bookstore, and what is the name of it? Do they sell online too?

Be careful, folks, when you see a deck/book set at a real low price, it may be just the book. I'd suggest you ask the seller if the deck (78 cards) is included before you buy.

They have a website (www.halfpricebooks.com) but their shipping rates are high and their online selection is much less than their stores. According to their website they have 75 stores in 11 states--Arizona, California, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin. If you're interested in this particular deck amazon.com (search under renaissance tarot by Jane Lyle) shows at least three booksellers selling new copies ranging in price from $4.94-$7.95 + $3.50 shipping. I'm sure there are also other bookstores that specialize in remainder (unsold/overstocked, out-of-print copies) books. I often order online from www.discountnewagebooks.com Their service is great and you can often get great deals. They have an online catalog, but if someone were interested in a particular title I suppose they could email them.
