Just went into my local Borders book store and saw that they are having their semi-annual teachers appreciation weekend at the end of this month, where teachers receive 25% off!!!... Ahhh, my time to buy another new deck... :D As a matter of fact, I looked in the case to see that they have gotten several new decks, and some wonderful choices, even newer ones, such as the Comparitive tarot. One in particular looked interesting, the Medieval Scapini. Looks like it has the feel of a ancient deck, but I see that it has also illustrated pips, so I am assuming it is a more modern creation. In any case, with the Old English look of it, I find it quite appealing.
Any insights into this deck?
Ahh, well, saving my pennies for my wish list here...:P

I personally LOVE the Medieval Scapini... Think of the older decks, like the Visconti Sforza, but add some occult symbolism, a touch of humour in the Minor Arcana, and very very nice artwork, and that's the deck!
I woudl say it's a deck for those who love the look of the older decks, and want a powerful-looking deck, but would also like to have some occult significance in the deck too.
My advice... Buy it!

Hi, Khatruman! I, too, think the Medieval Scapini is a beautiful deck. The pip illustrations are suggestive of the essence of each card and are humorous, as Kiama has pointed out; they are much more elaborately drawn than Marseilles-style pips, but less so than in RWS-style decks. The majors are beautiful. The deck has a lovely old-world feel. I find that it doesn't speak to me as much as some other decks, but if the period artwork and style appeal to you, I do not believe it would be difficult to read with.
The Borders in our neck of the woods was fully stocked with recently-published tarot decks last weekend, and if yours is anything like this one, you will have to buy several decks! Have fun on your shopping spree! :)

This was one of my first decks and 10 years later I still like it, both to look at it and read with it. The artist, Luigi Scapini, has illustrated several other tarot and divination decks. He also is the artist that recreated the missing cards in the Cary-Yale Visconti deck that U.S. games distributes. The LWB (Little White Book) that comes with the deck is much better than usual and does a decent job in explaining the author's drawings. I believe there is a book being written about this deck that is due to be published in the future.

Thanks everyone for your advice on the Medieval Scapini. I do like it, but I'm sure some of you know that sometimes you see a deck that looks good, but get it home and find it not to be as you expected.
Now, I just have to say a few invocations so that it will stay in the case at Borders until the 28th... :D
