OMG, what has tarotholicism brought me to?????

Thread originally posted on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum on 28 Mar 2003, and now archived in the Forum Library.

Khatruman  28 Mar 2003
As I was just updating my "Own Up what decks do you have?" List (BTW, are the tally guys still tally whacking? *L*) to add my newly acquired Victoria Regina, I was scanning the list to see that I am close to having ~cue scary music~ as well as one number (1JJ Swiss)

I only have seven letters to go:

E=hmm, was actually looking up the Element and the Elemental the other day...nahh, didn't catch me

I=isn't there an Isis tarot or something?? *L* or maybe I can do that IJJ Swiss thing to cheat..*L*

J=How about the Jumpin Jeehosifats tarot?

K=heard Kinkos is putting out a deck

X=hmmm, looks like I will just have to get that Xultun deck after all :P

Y=ohh, I got it..the Yo Yo Tarot... throw the cards to the floor and what bounces back in your hand is your reading!

Z= ahhhhh, the Zerner Farber keeps popping in my head, and there are still two days at that Borders sale..*L*

Ok, I know nobody around here encourages tarotholism, so I know nobody is going to respond with suggestions here for my collection to be named: Tarot--From A to Z!!

I have become just as bad, I fear :(

When I joined the forum at the end of Jan I had 6 decks. Now I have 16! But I swear, once I get my Camoin, I am done. Yup thats it.

Gerbear  28 Mar 2003
How about the Kalevala Tarot for K, and the Yeager Taot of Meditation for Y ?

Ummm, hmmm, yeah... can you say:

"Hello, My name is Mimi...and I am a tarotholic"

~crowd murmers.. "Hello, Mimi"~

Umm, wait.. didn't you say if I showed you mine, you would show me yours??? MUHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Mimers  28 Mar 2003
Humph

Mimi goes back to her state of denial.

But they are sooooo pretty. I had to have them! I won't do it again. Besides I got my tax return. I had to buy something for myself!

Gerbear  28 Mar 2003
Is there a chapter of Tarotholics Anonymous anywhere. I also went back to update my list. Since Khatruman was having so much fun, I checked for the letters of the alphabet. I have all but;
J,K, and Q. Funny, I feel fine !

felicityk  28 Mar 2003
I have an E (Eclectic) and two J's (Nigel Jackson and Jasniak), assuming you go by the last name when the deck is named for the artist. :)

Ravenswing  29 Mar 2003
Ah, my name is Steve.

Okay, I have to admit it. I'm REALLY stuck with these cards. I'm trying hard, but it's not working. My goal is to get down to one divination, one study, and a few collectables.

Yeah, I know... unless I let go entirely, I'll never get away from it. But you gotta understand-- I'm trying in stages. Let me explain a bit:

They keep haunting me. They're on my computer screen-- and I can't get them off. In fact I can't get off either.

They keep arriving in little boxes or packages to my door. It's even come to the point that I get depressed if I don't find one there.

My dreams are getting stranger-- they told me had to sleep with them. A different one each night so they'll all be satisfied or it would be nightmares instead. This is real hard on me cause I've always been monogomous.

My usual way of walking has changed dramatically. My friends-- the few I have left-- say that I don't walk any more, I kind of shuffle.

I'm making these little bags now. All of the the boxes are wearing out from putting them in and taking them out and putting them in and taking them out.....

I'm loosing all sense of time. I wake up at three in the morning only to find that it's noon in Europe and tomorrow in Australia. Even worse, on my birthday somebody told me it was the Winter Solstice. Snow in june?? And I always felt bad for those poor kids whose birthday was near Christmas-- they always got cheated out of presents. Have i turned into one of them??

What was that??? OH MY GOD!! They told me it was OOP!!

GIVE IT TO ME NOW!!!

ps--Khatruman: I've got the Tarot of the Imagination if you're really interested })

Amythist  29 Mar 2003
The elememt tarot is a nice set. I have the set and i enjoy every moment working from it. I like colourful bright colours so i had to have the set and i love it dearly.

Lord of the rings i never liked as it looks like a load of dungons and dull coloured so not my kind the choice is yours go with the deck you are most happy with.

coldsuns  29 Mar 2003
I'll suggest some cute but colourful Tarot Decks. Such as the Hello Tarot, Sailor Tarot, Whimsical Tarot, Disney Tarot and Alice in Wonderland Tarot. When you're using them, you seems to be watching a cartoon with different stories.

Starswars Deck and Babyloon Deck arent that bad. But the graphics are a bit of too messy and look rather stressful than peaceful.

Melvis  29 Mar 2003
Ohmigosh...

All I have left to get is Q, Y, and Z! I knew there was a reason that the Quest has been calling my name, lately! It's my subconscious perfectionism crying out for completion of my Tarot alphabet!

Yes, yes. That's exactly what I needed. Another excuse to buy a tarot deck. Khat, I think you are Tarotholic enabler in disguise! You come to us wailing and gnashing your teeth but there is an underlying challenge in your protestations. })

I WILL get tarot decks from each letter of the alphabet before Khatruman...I will, I will, I will!!! Nooooo! My precioussssses! I didn't mean to cause you pain!

Peace,

Melvis

Melvis  29 Mar 2003
Actually, I should applaude Khatruman for getting so much of the alphabet completed with only 25 decks! It took me 90-something decks to get 23 letters. :D

Melvis

Ohhh, and thanks for the compliments on my alphabetical proficiencies!!! What can I say, I am a word man..*L*

NOOWWWWW, onto complete that alphabet before Melvis..heh heh

Violet Gargoyle  29 Mar 2003
I= Inner Child Cards
E= Egyptian Tarot

I myself am missing G (Easily Fixed, since the Gothic Tarot is on its way to my hot little hands), J, K, L, N, Q, X, Y, Z.

Dakini  29 Mar 2003
Since I've joined this forum (last nov I believe) I have something like 26 decks and I started with RSW and Morgan Greer. Today I found a used copy of the Unicorn tarot I just couldn't past up. The box is beat up and its missing the book but the cards are in great shape. For the price I couldn't pass it up. Plus I've already got the perfect bag for it. :)
Bright Blessings, Dakini

PS I haven't alphabetized them.....OH NOOOO !!!

Edited : After a closer look at the deck I found (used) it is Not the unicorn deck, but was in a unicorn box. I don't know what it is actually. I just looked up the unicorn deck and it's definately not it. It has hearts instead of cups and wands (which on the unicorn is rods). Also has prince and princesses. No unicorns at all. Anyone one with any clues as to what it is due tell. It has pastel colors, white bolders and the backs are white with gold stars, crosses, looks like flaming wands and 2 hearts inside hollow hearts. Thanks Dakini

Ruby7  30 Mar 2003
I'm so happy to know that I am not alone in being a tarotholic! I have had a couple of decks for about 13 years, only recently become a bit of a collector. I was getting seriously worried about myself until I discovered this site.

I am curious though, does anyone have any thoughts as to why we keep collecting them? Is it the search for "the one", or just the joy of being surrounded by many decks, and having lots of choices to read from. I'm sure everyone has their own personal reasons.

All I know is that I am always so excited to receive a new deck, but in the end I always stick with my old favourites. I just ordered the William Blake tarot of the Creative Imagination and am anxiously waiting it's arrival.

Good question Ruby. In my case i love the art and the creativity displayed. It's amazing how many ways a set of symbols can be
graphically portrayed, and the number of interpretations of those same symbols stretches out towards infinity. I just use three decks for reading, old comfortable friends. I collect various other items, but my collecting passion is with Tarot

For me, it is definitely not a search for the one, but to have decks for different types of reading. Plus, the artwork contributes also. It is also for me a way to compare cards from various decks in order to get the feeling of that particular card.

Ohh, heck, it's an addiction too!!! *L*... I just expanded my collection by many this weekend and coming week as the other decks I bought or traded for come in.

So many decks, so little time..*s*

PS. I hope you enjoy the Blake deck. That was the deck that opened up tarot for me beyond the RWS deck. I love the deck, and Ed Buryn did an amazing job with the book also. Well worth what you may have paid for it (and I heard it is selling for a pretty steep price). I am anxiously awaiting my Shakespearian deck myself.. :D

wolfen045  30 Mar 2003
I am on a very small fixed income as I am a disabled individual , so I am unable to buy all the decks I would like. I look at the decks pictured on this sight and now I have a wish list 20 miles long. But at least my sister did win the famous Miss
Cleo deck for me from the Ebay auction. Until I found this site, I was surrounded by friends and family who regarded my addicition to collecting tarot decks as something totally bizzare. It is nice to be part of a community who not only Understand but encorage my tarotoholism. (BTW, I am reimbursing my sister for my new deck) Keep pushing those decks on us Khatruman!! Blessings and joy to all, wolfen

I have a feeling that I will really enjoy the Blake deck. It wasn't cheap, but not as pricey as I thought it would be. It was $39.95 U.S. dollars plus shipping. I ordered it through Abebooks which is hooked up to Ed Buryn's own bookstore. I had a question about the deck and Ed answered my e-mail personally within an hour. The deck is new and signed by Ed Buryn. I know you have your own deck, so I guess this information is for anyone else looking for the William Blake Tarot of the Creative Imagination. It took me a while to track the deck down so I may as well share this.

I hope you enjoy the Shakespearian deck!

Ruby7  30 Mar 2003
Sorry Khatruman, I screwed up trying to quote you in my other reply. I am very new on this site, will try to figure it out for next time.

By the way, my interest in the Blake tarot started from one little quote from his poem "Auguries of Innocence"

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

azuremariposa  31 Mar 2003
well, for the longest time (we're talking 14 yrs or so) i only had the RW deck...i looked at other decks, but never had the desire to get any others...recently (since discovering Aeclectic, i believe), i've been lusting over various decks...so, while i do not have them as of yet (two are on order from Amazon...woohoo!), here's my "lusting after" list:
Art Nouveau Tarot
Enchanted Tarot
Goddess Tarot
Osho-Zen Tarot
Sacred Circle
New Palladini (sp?) Tarot
(these are just the ones i can think of off the top of my head...hehe)
any recommendations on any of the above?? i'd love the input...
many blessings to all...

Khatruman  31 Mar 2003
Ummm, darn, maybe it ought to be tarotholism??? (thinks I pulled an Archie Bunker there :D). Anyway, these tarotholics aren't going to help you in the 12 step program here... just tell you, "Buy them ALLLL!!!" and throw in a little MUAHAHAHAHA!!! (I am beginning to believe Aeclectic should have a little Dracula logo with that maniacal laugh as its motto)

That said, umm, I certainly hope the Sacred Circle and the Osho-Zen were the ones you ordered (quietly slips in a muahahahaha)

And welcome the forums, ohh blue butterfly...:D

azuremariposa  31 Mar 2003
yes, indeed, Khatruman...i did order the Osho-Zen & Sacred Circle decks...they are my favourites from the list...and i figured i'd get a "BUY THEM ALL!!!!" response ;)
and thank you very much for the welcome... :D

LOL. A tarotgollum after my own sinfully greed-ridden tarotholic heart. There's only one problem with tarotholism: We don't WANT to be cured. Addiction is just too much fun, and so is the "support" group better known as Aeclectic. That said, I don't think I am qualified as yet to join the elite Tarotholic club - I can still count the number of decks I have. On my fingers.

;)

I think you may have the Enchanted (zerner-farber) deck there.

Dakini  01 Apr 2003
Yeah You are right Purplelady. It took a magnifing glass to see the small print but it says Amy Zerner 1990. Thanks Dakini

Alissa  01 Apr 2003
Ah yes, compulsive alphabetizing. I'm quite familiar with this behavior. After 10 years working in libraries, I've been known to alphabetize my spice rack and my CDs also.

I don't have enough decks to alphabetize them though ... at least not yet.

And OMG lmao at Khat's "Archie Bunkeresque" tarotholicism. I totally got that joke, and almost fell off my chair.

SherryZoned  01 Apr 2003
I dont collect decks...I just like them...I look at them..Maybe use it a couple times..>Then if not i put it up on my big fat trade list in US/Canada..part of the fun in this forum is trading..I spend very little money to get a deck i have considered..Then if i dont like it..I keep trading...THen i go thru spells (like recently..just put 11 things up for trades 5 deck sets) and I am like I have to many..So i go put them up for trade..They are nice decks..I just dont use them.

azuremariposa  27 Apr 2003
so, my tarotholicism has brought me to this level:
i actually created a new acct w/amazon JUST TO CREATE A "TAROT ONLY" WISH LIST!!! :D yes, it's true, i swear...i'm sick...i need help (though i know i can't count on you enabler's here...hehe)
AND, if that wasn't enough...
i have the bestest friend in the whole world, and i bet you all wish she was your best friend...but she's mine...she got me two things from my wish list! so, in "5-9 business days" i will have in my possession *drumroll please*
THE FEY!!!
and she also got me "The Forest of the Souls" by Rachel Pollack!
you're jealous now aren't you? well, tough, cuz she's MY best friend...hehe (of course, i'll be making her a garnet [or maybe amethyst...we'll see what she wants! heh] necklace now b/c i can't receive w/o giving too...hehe..so, she's lucky too! ;))
i'm so giddy i'm ready to dance around the room...but i won't...i'll scare the old people if i do...hehe...just thought i'd share!!

many blessings!!

fairyhedgehog  27 Apr 2003
I like trading as a way of getting to see decks I wouldn't otherwise see, and then passing them on. A bit like a library for tarot cards, although the postage can make it a bit expensive sometimes.

The trouble is, that that is never a way of actually reducing my number of decks, cos I always get a deck back in return. I've only got 12 or 15 decks, but I keep trying to get rid of some of them then some little deck calls my name. And so many of the ones I already have I couldn't bear to part with.

I know it isn't many compared to some of you but I only ever meant to have one.

baba-prague  27 Apr 2003
I discovered last night that my cat has badly chewed the box of a tarot loaned to me from a friend here (she is very young - cat not friend) and I found myself thinking "Oh good, I'll have to keep it now and buy her another", which is NOT GOOD! I am afraid to count my decks - but they are for research purposes, honest, honest, honest (okay, not quite honest ;-) )

"Eek" is right. I've got 22 tarot decks and 3 oracles, don't know how that happened in only 16 months.

I still think you're a rock of discipline to keep trading them. I've reached saturation, as apart from the Golden Tarot I don't covet anything new. Eventually the Mary-el when it's completely finished and the Ironwing, but that's going to be a while. I was waffling on the Templar but decided not to get it.

Ahem...

You may now return to your regularly scheduled Tarotholic activities.

They sneak up on you, these devious, tricksy, scheming decks! I never thought I was a collector - sure, I had a few decks, maybe half a dozen, ten at the most... then I counted 'em...
Twenty-nine!
That's just tarot, without the oracle decks.
One of my friends asked me if I collect tarot decks and I had to say yes! I didn't mean to - it just happened! ;)

Jilly

Melvis  28 Jun 2003
Perhaps we do not collect decks. Perhaps the decks collect themselves at the home of a suitable Tarotholic. Perhaps a deck in the possession of a loving owner attaches a littler marker to that owner, so when said owner is in a store and other decks detect the marker, they know the owner is a good one. Perhaps that's when they start their calling, tempting the owner, luring him or her into purchasing just one more deck.

Perhaps I've been spending a little too much time with my cards...

;)

Peace,

Melvis

My answer to that question is "Because I can" *LOL* .... I have over 100 decks (lost count) ... think I have 3 more coming soon (pre-ordered to arrive this month - yes Khat the Mermaid is one of them *LOL*) .... as for the alphabet I think I may be missing the Z but I think that might be all, maybe the Y. I have found the Z deck I want (sorry can't spell it *LOL*) it is a German deck.

I found THE ONE about a year and half ago and no tarot deck can ever take its place, but there is quite a bit of Tarot Gollum in me and if some hobit tries to take any deck of mine you will find him missing a hand or two ~evil grin~.

Khat I am most delighted to see you have joined the ranks of Tarot-holics Anonymous (we are a support group for those who wish to get more decks, and take pride in being great enablers. This is not a group for those seeking recovery, but for those who have lovingly embraced their terminal condition).

Just thought I would try to help you out *LOL*

Little Baron  07 Jul 2003
Hi everyone

I never saw myself as a collector either, and to be honest, my collection is not that big - which is why I don't consider myself to be one. On the other hand, I have about 2000 smurfs, their houses, cars and everything else in the loft. I would say that was a collection!

I see it in the same way as clothes. I buy clothes to wear, give some away, reserect old jackets from the back of the wardrobe. I don't collect clothes but I sometimes pass a rail and think 'that would suit me'.

There are much worse things we could be spending our money on! And what would give us such long term pleasure.

I just looked at my deck list and I'm only missing E and X. Hmm.....I did own the Estensi but I sold it because I just didn't connect to it!
When the next tally comes around...it ought to be real interesting to see which decks are in the top spots!

I became a collector in a very short space of time and am HOOKED!!

35 decks and 6 oracles plus given away 3 decks and 1 oracle -all since March 2004:)

Great fun I've had too! All decks from trades:)

Thanks all :)
