Why on earth did LoScarabeo put arabic numerals on its reproduction of the Soprafino known as Ancient Italian Tarot ??? !!! COME ON !!!!!!!!!
So, I'm left with the other reproduction of the soprafino, the Classical Tarot, also by LoS ... where appear roman numerals :-D BUT also these weird keywords on the left side of the card :-(
No No No .........
So, ancient italian or classical ???

Hi Kissa, Lo Scarabeo didn't put Arabic numbers on the Ancient Italian -- that's the way the original cards were. The Ancient Italian and the Classical are taken from two different antique decks, and one had Arabic, one had Roman. The Ancient Italian is just a photograph of the original deck it was taken from. The Classical is a photograph of the (different) original deck, but recolored and with keywords added up the side. Lo Scarabeo didn't change or add numbers to either one.

Oh thanks Lee for the information ... My excuses to LoScarabeo then ...
;-)
I still haven't decided which one I like best though. I found out myself that the Ancient Italian was a copy of a 1880 deck whereas Classical is a copy of 1835. I get a bit lost in all thoses somptuous italian decks. Fortunately there are some gurus around here ("hysterical" forum ...) and tarothermit.com is a very informative source as well. Thanks again Lee for the input !

I've got the Classical one. Before, I was frustrating over whether to order the classical or ancient italian.
The classical won over coz i liked the borders, and the colour seemed more attractive.
Plus, all my readings with that have been accurate.

where is this "hysterical forum"? it seems everybody knows where it is and what's going on there but me. obviously, i've allowed RL to invade my online time, too much! LOL

Personally I hate the keywords running up the side of the card; it's distracting and puts the art off-center. That's what ruined Tarot of the Master for me.

i have the ancient italian and i'm very happy with it.
i dislike words on the side too. i have them on my visconti gold. it's like a reminder that this is just a copy of a card on another wider card.
the ancient italian has the look of an old deck. as it was originally printed, color runs and all.
i wanted the 'tarot of the master' as well. does anyone know if there is a version of the same deck without the keywords on the side?

i have the ancient italian, i like it better than the classical.
hmm, the keywords, its a pity loscarabeo prints them on the cards, sometimes in 4 languages, i wouldnt mind not having the keywords on them. but they have great "old" decks.
and, i have a very beautiful soprafino deck, limited edition collectors thing. images are the same as in the ancient italian.

I guess I have the Ancient Italian (no keywords).
It has become my main reading deck.

I currently have both AI and Classical. I'm looking to trade the Classical for another historical deck.
The keywords on the Classical are only slightly annoying, and quite odd. But the main reason I'd recommend the AI over the Classical is that the Classical slightly clips the side of some of the higher pip cards, especially in the Wands and Swords, so that the tips of some of the individual pips are missing.

I saw on Tarot Totes they list an Ancient Italian mignon (smaller size) by Lo Scarabeo. I'll have to keep my eye out, as I like this deck quite a bit. Smaller size decks are great travel choices for me.
I also have "Illustrated Guide to the Tarot" with oversize reproductions of the Ancient Italian cards. The text by Jonathan Dee supposedly would go with any deck (he writes this)---but I actually find the text and pictures seem to fit together. My only small comment is that when he chats about astrology, he only gives Golden Dawn suggestions...but it's supposedly a beginning book for Marseilles-style decks, so I understand why he'd use a popular association. Anyway, if you'd like a book that has the deck images, you might want to check this title out. ISBN is 0-517-16398-5.
I read an Amazon.com review that said this deck has a 'gypyish' feel. Perhaps because I got it during a vacation to Old California Mission sites, it reminded me of the romantic statuary and Victoriana, with delicate Italian engraving.
