Hi All
Apart from the RWS what other tarotdecks would you like to see a clone of?
I think I would like to see Dante Tarot - Giordano Berti & Andrea Serio
cloned :D

I'm with Rusty Neon, I too would love to see a good clone of the Thoth deck, none of the other Thoth clone decks quite captures the whole aspect of the Thoth, although I do like the Rohrig. And there seems to be so many Rider Waite clones around, it would make a refreshing change to see a few more good Thoth clones :)

now since i really love the Thoth i just find it hard to imagine anyone could ever improve it (must note i haven't seen the one linked to yet)
but a deck i find ugly or so-so and want a clone of is the Golden Dawn deck.
the Wang one is not pretty
the Cicero one ok but could be better.

Do you mean that someone does another take on the same Dante themes with surrealistic art? Maybe another deck with a good book would help me.
I was hoping someone focused on a more tightly depiction-say took a Dore to Pre-Raphaelite style and focused on La Vita Nuova or the three volumes of the Comedy.
The Dali to Surrealistic style and the broad range in the Lo Scarabeo deck is quite fetching for me. But short of a talent reader/writer as Paula Gibbey, I'd settle to having a book written by Berti and then jump into collecting from various artist depictions.
I haven't seen any other Dante scholars in the U.S. make any clear commentary on the deck yet. It took me quite awhile of working and wearing out one or two copies to figure out even how to do a small allegorical reading...most other people are better readers or stronger scholars than me. I had to have two classes with segments devoted to Inferno and Paradiso to really get just the Divine Comedy in context.
It would be nice to attempt or encourage a range of artists to do tarot-related illustrated folios of works from great writers....it be nice to see this on this side of the Pacific. Of course the William Blake Tarot quality by Ed Burne comes to mind.
Thanks for the ideas...I also would like someone to illustrate in the style of the artist Edmund Dulac and his versions of fairy tales

*Diana whispers so that no-one can hear her: "Why would anyone want a clone of a deck when they can have the real thing?" and she tip-toes out of the room.*

Hmmmm.... you see Diana, you are a happily married woman [to your marseilles deck that is] although I'm aware that you too have been known to have a wandering eye. I too know about the appeal of those sweet young knights in the Hudes deck.
The difference for those of us caught in the throes of tarotholism is that we just don't have what it takes to be faithfull yet. There's always the possibility of some bright new RWS clone to grab our attention, or better still a dark and dramatic Thoth-alike to lure our affections.
I know, I know - seen one, seen 'em all, you say - but bear with me...... a little bit of wanderlust can't do any real harm. Can it?

Darn. I spoke too loud! Aoife caught me in the act! Thanks for your (as usual) great response, by the way. Made me think.

...ah Diana, I'm in lala fairyland when it comes to Tarot Clones or workalike themes. Suppose, gentle ladies and lads, a King or Knight of Cups winked at you with come-hither eyes...say as per the Rock (Scorpian King movie) or Avalon Tarot Lancelot workalike. Or if that isn't your style, then a very vibrant Vivian/Temperance angel has eyes only for you and she says, oh-so-softly,
"May I tell you a story...
only you can understand.
It's not easy sitting on this shelf here
with all these others for company.
I was so lonely...
But then I see you
You are unique, I can see.
and I know only you can understand.
Come closer...closer, yes...I want
just to whisper stories...
to have your fingers do their magic
look at me, shuffle me...
...I know only you
will understand..."
...bad version of the sirens call from a poem. But actually some review pics of yet another Avalon/Arthurian/Celtic tarot can sometimes draw me into their oh-so-familiar theme.
Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing another Astrology/Greco-Roman tarot with mostly ancient statues and vase art.

Many of the RWS 'clones' can hardly be viewed as improvements of the Rider deck :), so I can't see how that should stop Thoth 'clones' from appearing. I'd certainly like to see a de-Themalasized version of the Thoth.

Well there's also Dowson's out-of-print Hermetic Tarot deck, which follows the guidelines in Golden Dawn's Book "T" while not necessarily based on Golden Dawn house decks.
And, if you want a deck having card background colours that correspond with Golden Dawn colour scales, there's the Gill Tarot deck. (Duquette's deck and, to a certain extent, Crowley's deck also have GD colour scale colours.)
Granted, the Hermetic and the Gill are hardly similar enough to the GD house decks to be clones.

In a way, one can say that the 1760 Conver version of the Tarot de Marseille pattern has been 'cloned' various times: e.g., the deck of Paul Marteau (who changed the colours), the deck of Jodo/Camoin (who 'restored' it by bringing out occult details and by bringing in details from other decks of the TdM tradition), the Fournier edition of the TdM (which added a variety of different colour backgrounds), etc.

Diana do you have a Tarot de Marseille clone that you like??
I know what you mean when you say why would anyone want to clone a deck.
I would love to see a new fresh deck no clones etc. but it's been done so much with the RWS.

I'm with Jema...a prettier GD Tarot would definitely be welcome.
And I'm not sure this counts, but, embarassing as it is to admit...I love the Hello Kitty Tarot, which of course is a very close RWS clone. I began to wonder a while ago, though, what a Hello Kitty Thoth deck would look like...

The 418 tarot which is still to be finished looks like it`s going to be a very good Thoth clone: definately on the wish list. Don`t like Melody`s tarot though (yuk).

Would there be copyright issues Hello Kitty tarot is not an officially licensed product.
However it's still very cute :*
Good bye Kitty tarot

Well, the actual Hello Tarot doesn't seem to have had any problems...I guessing either Sanrio doesn't know about it, or (GASP!) a huge Japanese corporation is actually being a good sport.
Considering that Tarot is pretty big in Japan, I'm surprised they don't rush out their own deck...
A Pokemon Tarot would also be...

How about the Parrott Tarot for a Thoth clone?
I just got that deck about a week ago, and I *love* it. I hope to post a thorough review of it in a couple of days, in order to recommend it to other people and to figure out why I like it so much.

...it would maintain the traditional Thoth imagery, but with little bits of Hello Kitty fur and pieces interspersed throughout.
Yes, a Hello Kitty Thoth Deck is an excellent idea! We should call it the "Here, Kitty, Kitty!" Tarot...
}) muhahahaha!
