Hi all :+)
Was at the checkout in K-mart Booragoon and the New Woman magazine caught my eye. More properly the thumping great "FREE TAROT" plastic sleeve caught me :-p
Enclosed with the magazine was a majors only deck and a short book of meanings and instructions. The cards were designed by Nicole Onslow. I'm thinking they are done in acrylics or gouche.
Quite well done.
The book gives some very basic card layouts and examples of readings (which to be honest I wish more tarot books would do, more than 1 at least!). The card meanings are given (in order) -
*in a nutshell
*general meaning
*money
*love
*work
*friends/family/home
The cards are obviously aimed at New Woman's target audience young career women and to my mind embody several of the stereotypes thereoff :+). In the narrow fields given in the meanings I feel they *could* give fairly accurate surface meanings.
The magazine is the current May 2003 edition retailing practically everywhere for AUD$6.20/NZ$7.20.
However some optimistic soul is trying to pull this on Ebay -

lol
Anyone else got the deck? Impressions?
Cheers,

I got this deck at a carboot sale about 8 months ago... For 20p. }) This version was published with New Woman magazine in the year 2000, but from what you describe, it is exactly the same... Same designer, book, etc.
I don't like the Death card though. It simply shows a woman looking a bit Goth, with a skull-and-crossbones on her shirt...
Some of the cards... (Fool, Hanged Man, Justice) are humourous, and I love the way the cards are brought into the modern world... The World becomes a woman at her desk, in front of her computer, with a map of the world behind her... She obviously is a business woman, a succesful one at that, with the world at her fingertips and opportunities galore!
I love to see the way the Tarot is presented to today's modern young woman... The art style used, the way the images change, etc... It says alot about what the designer thought the Tarot should be today. And it certainly opens one's eyes to see how Tarot can be related to the modern world.
A nice deck to have in a collection, esp. for those who collect decks which are given away with magazines (I do). It's strange that every single deck of Tarot cards I have come across which was given away with a magazine has been 'brought into the modern world', with very specific meanings and modern images... Not once have I seen a traditional deck given away.

Can I get this magazine in Los Angeles, California? Not sure I have ever seen this. I'm guessing it's only an Australian mag.

Hi Sunflowr,
The website for the magazine is www.newwoman.com.au.
I could send you a copy if you wanted. Dunno about the actual magazine, but the cards/book should be reasonable for postage.
Cheers,

The Mind Body Spirit magazine is giving away a traditional deck, I think it is a Marseilles. We have this mag here in Dutch but I know it is available in UK too. They give a few cards every time I think.
BTW I don't want to promote this magazine, I meant this just as a sidenote. I bought there cheap introduction issue and I found it too superficial, maybe more for real beginners.
