I have to agree with crystalmynx. :)
But once in a while I might pick up a themed deck.

i was thinking just yesterday that i am turning into a one-deck-woman - thoth is the only deck i use these days.
(the others are just there for comparison)

That was a tough decision for me, since the type of deck I prefer depends on what I'm using it for...!
For reading, I use a RSW clone, the Robin Wood.
For study and learning, I use any theme deck, such as the Legend Arthurian.
For playing Tarocchi I use a gaming deck. (IJJ recently, though I should be getting an actual French Tarot (For the game called 'French Tarot') deck to play this with.
For studying about Hermetics specifically I use Thoth, or any Golden Dawn deck.
In the end, I voted for RWS cuz I'm assuming we're looking at what type of deck we prefer to read with?

Its got to be the Thoth :)
This deck has opened my eyes more than the Rider Waite or clone decks ever did.

rider waite clones or derivites.
(morgon greer, hanson roberts, universal waite, universal tarot lo scarbeo, beginner tarot ( a really good rider clones ) which is called the shaman caselli tarot, )
and anyone deck that follows the traditional rider waite meanings,is one i can excell at i sincerly believe.
you might say that the rider is the source of my knowledge but i like the modern verisons better for
1. better artwork
2. more pleasing artwork
3. can get more in depth as you can see thing in a new way however staying true to the original.

I voted for the Waite, but in thinking about it, I believe I was confused in that the poll label asks for preferred "type". To me, type would include those based on that system. So I really don't see the difference between the Waite choice and the Waite clone choice. Aren't the clones a "type" of Waite deck?
In any case, I think I prefer the Waite system, but that is not etched in stone, and it depends on my desires, goals, and whims on the occasion that I use a deck.

I voted Rider Waite clones. Especially the 10 of Swords.
(Only kidding.....)
Bad Diana. No biscuit.
Anyone who guesses what I really voted, gets a Swiss chocolate mickey-mouse medal.

Thoth. but after participating here, I REALLY want the Marseilles, which makes sense to me, because I think Marseilles is the basis for Thoth. Too many similarities.......
I am surprised, however, that so many say Thoth. Why aren't there more study groups in Thoth. Kaz, I love your observations, lets get some more going, what'd ya say? :)
It's funny, when I was a 'freak', back in the 'dopey' days, I was embarrassed to like Led Zepplin so much. They were not the popular freak group. that's how I felt about my love for Thoth. I really didn't think it was that popular here. I am delighted to find so many fellow Thothers!!! (Is that like an Author in Tarot????)
But, I must say, I will be a Mary El-er when her deck comes out....... Her deck is the one in my heart!

Wasn't there a similar thread just a month or two ago?
I was just thinking about it the other day.
I picked Thoth based deck, but I like some theme decks too. I am starting to study the Marseille also, so who knows... ;) JOAN

i prefer reading with rwcs clones but i enjoy studying more spiritual decks like the transformational or artistic like the margarete peterson or themed like the legend arthurian. variety is wonderful but when it comes to reading i prefer to stick with the basics and what i started with was a rwcs clone.

It’s time for confessions.
Truth rules. I love non-illustrated pips, I love illustrated pips…
And in all the time I have read, I have never ever used a Thoth.
(I did use the same freaking RWCS deck far past its affective life span and never saw the reason to buy a new deck, until that deck was lost to me, forcing me to buy another…and then I discovered Aeclectic…)
But, I have never used a Thoth.

I found it very difficult to vote...I have so many decks I like to use all for different purposes.
In the end I voted "themed" because I think that is the reason why I want to have decks...does it speak to me, do I like the artwork, has it something special.
I think some themed decks are rws-clones, others are more inspired by Toth - so there is also an overlap.

*Whispers* I've never used the Thoth either... I have studied it, and looked at it, but never used it to read with...

jlbvt, there was in fact a somewhat similar poll thread I started back in February.
That earlier thread was for decks we actually own, whereas this one is due to the other thread on the analysis of Aeclectic Tarot 'preferred' decks over the past four years, combined with reflections on how I wish there could be an optional preferential voting system for these things.
As I had already grouped decks under these ten categories for the earlier poll, I simply used these same ones for this one - hence the similarity. Good spotting :) !!!!

So far I vastly prefer my RW deck to any others I own, but I do like my egyptian deck quite a bit... and I have been meaning to pick up a theme deck for a while, if only for the artwork.
