In my many trading adventures, I was not looking for the "one". Just looking for a deck I could work with.
Now I am at a standing point in my trading. I have stuff up for trade. But I am not trading away a lot of the decks that I own. So i relize I was really looking for
Tarot decks that were unique in their own way but I could work with them. So i have found the ONE. It just happens to be a variety of them together that make it "the one".
Get me? LOL :D

yeah, i get what your saying. i have a lot of "the ones", too. in fact, i'm not looking at new decks hard and heavy like i did last year at this time. it's like i've settled in for the long haul with what i have.
in tarot have more than one significant other is okay. it is in relationships with other humans that having more than one "the one" can cause problems. ;)

i so agree with you. i noticed that for the first time since the 80:ies my collection is actually getting smaller.
i am slowly trading away decks for other things or giving away decks. i got a core of about 25 decks that i work with and know or want to get to know better and am in the process of finding new homes for the others.
it will be slow going though. i can only part with a small number of decks at a time (or i will mourn them)
but i predict that in about two years i will only have maybe 20 decks.
those decks are "the one"

I suppose I am still in the process of collecting my 'one'. I am finally able to let go of some decks that I truely do not need. Thanks of couse to the push from the Trade Queen herself (Redwood). :D
I hope one day I will have a small collection of decks I know very well and use. I just can't see myself having a closet full of decks that I never use.

I never thought I'd see the day when my fellow Tarotholics' deck collections decreased in size... :( ;)
I suppose it all depends on why you collect decks. Some people collect decks so that they can find new decks to use. Some just collect decks because they're there, just like a stamp collector would collect stamps. I'm one of the latter, so I doubt my collection would ever decrease, simply because I've resigned myself to the idea that I hardly use more than 3 different decks anyway! ;)

For some reason tarot decks have the potential to make me unhappy as well as happy - I can't settle when I have a deck that I really want to trade away. So I am slowing down my tarot aquisition now.
I like the idea of a collection of decks to be 'the one' but I don't think I've got my 'one' yet. It will have to include Hanson-Roberts, Universal Waite, Whimsical, Aquarian and Ancestral Path, I know that much. I'm not sure about most of the other ten or so that I own. Moon Garden and Glastonbury are here to stay, does that make them part of 'the one'? I'm not sure.
Anyway, it's a very interesting thought which I shall be turning over in my mind for the next few days.

D'you know, I can t believe it took me so long to get IN on here...so many of my questions are talked through for me - wicked!1
I've posted somewhere else, before seeing this thread, BUT - Do any of you know the Buckland-Romani? More importantly - any of you living UK/anywhere really - who are looking to part with your Buckland?
Doubt it, but worth a try!
That, for me, is the new baby at the moment. There never really will be a TheOne for me - I used to want there to be, think there would be, but now kind-of realise it's a mix of the pictures I hold in my head
xxlove to all

well i think it is healthy to get rid of things that are no longer 'you'.
why have things locked away and ignored - when someone else could be using them , or you could get money from them to buy/do what is 'you now'.

Maybe my 'TheOne' is my whole deck collection....?
I must admit though, there is a group of decks in my collection which I love more than the others... They include:
Robin Wood
Wheel of Change
Sugar Mystic
William Blake
Hanson Roberts
Whimsical
Glastonbury
Legend Arthurian
And quite a few more I can't think of right now....

My "one" is a combination of Tarot of the Spirit, and the Thoth. My collection is just that - a collection. I collect for the art, for comparative purposes, and to sample other viewpoints about the wide world of tarot. If anyone has been watching Kiama's thread on what decks are owned, then you've noticed that my list is being updated on a weekly basis.

Well... interesting thoughts here. At first I was going to go against the grain and actually narrow my "the one" down to only one deck. The Rhörig Tarot. However, as I started thinking about it more and more... I realized that I too am a person for whom one deck is not enough. The Rhörig Tarot really opened up the Tarot for me - allowing me to see things in new ways, finding new depths that I'd never found using only my Rider-Waite deck. A comparative study I did between these 2 wildly different decks is what really opened it all up for me.
However, while my Rhörig Tarot and RWS decks are my mainstays, I've added a few others of which I've grown rather fond. The Spiral, The Haindl, and Goddess Tarot all have been working extremely well for me. Then there's the Victoria Regina Tarot... while this is a beautiful deck, with a lot of meaning, I'm finding that I have to study it on its own. And, while it is, for me, a somewhat difficult study, I am also finding a great deal of meaning in the cards.
So, I guess I have to conclude that, like so many others here, my "the one" has turned into several. And, I actually am somewhat surprised to come to this realization.

For me, right now, "the one" is the Nigel Jackson! I love working with that deck, it seems like accurate and insightful readings come through easily for me with this deck. The pastel colors used on the deck by the author are especially appealing for me, it is a very pleasant color palette, easy to work with.

I also think the 'one' for me is a mix of several decks - The Universal Waite always seems to be the one I refer back to, even when I wasn't realising that I was doing it, I'm trying hard to get into the Thoth, the Rohrig is a firm favourite and the Tarot of the Spirit is another that seems to have a certain appeal, still not sure what it is though lol.
I've come to accept that having studied the Rider Waite for so long I'll always see aspects of it even in something like the Thoth but it does seem to be working and studying these decks side to side is a real eye opener. :)
I haven't looked at any other decks since my purchase of the Tarot of the Spirit (which is a sort of Thoth clone) so I think I may have found the 'ones' lol

Nicely said! I'm up to about 30 decks now, but I've collected them over 6 years, work with all of them and feel that each one resonates with a particular facet of my personality/outlook and facilitates readings when I'm in the particular frame of mind for it. I've also looked at a whole lot of decks I have NO interest in. So, I honestly feel that all of my decks are part of the "one", because if they weren't, I wouldn't hesitate to take LittleWing's advice and get rid of them. I don't tolerate much extraneous stuff well because I think it clutters up my thinking just by hanging around peripherally, and I like to keep a nice, clear focus. If a deck isn't working out, first it goes in the closet and off my "Tarot Table", then, if I don't miss it, after a while I will send it on it's way to someone who might appreciate it.

I have a small intimate circle of decks that I use on a regular basis one way or another, including the Swedish witch, animal wise and tarot of the spirits. Then there is a bigger circle of decks that I use only now and then but I would not want to part with ever, like the robin wood, greenwood and vision quest. I agree with the principle of getting rid of what you no longer want...when I look at my collection there are only two decks (with not very high "trade value" I am afraid ;)) that I would like to get rid of, the rest I all like one way or another. I will probably never read with the legend arthurian or dragon tarot, but I still like them both just to look at. Same goes for my oracle decks, some I use occasionally, some I never use like the wisdom cards, but I still would not like to part with them. And my wish list is still longer than the decks I want to lose...so I think my collection will not decrease for the time being. I can see myself at some point stop collecting decks for use, but then I think I will go on to the really gorgeous decks I want just because I like to look at them.
So no, a deck for me does not have to be usable to be in my collection, but it has to "click" with me one way or another.
And maybe in future I WILL get rid of some of the pretty decks that I want to hang on to now - don't think this is very likely though.
