Is it because I am an opera singer? The Wagnerian characters are all here, Walkyries, Niebelungen, Norns, so I really love this deck. I always have felt the Nordic Gods and the Tarot ought to fit together well.

It is most gratifying to see Loki as the Fool. Here is the fool in his guise as trixter of divine proportions. Umbrae should be happy.

The minors follow the RWS meanings, and so I was able to read with this straight out of the box.

I adore the artwork, mostly watercolour, I think. Splendid use of colour, appealing (non-comic art) style, and wonderful use of perspective! The style reminds me of illustrations in chidrens fairy tales.

Would you like to know some of my favorite cards? There are too many to name!
  • XVI: The Tower -- shows the Castle of the Gods in the sky, burning.
  • (I thought it was Valhalla, but here it is called Asgard)

  • 2 of Pentacles: A bird's eye view of two men stirring an enormous vat "the Dwarves Fjalaar and Galarr create the hydromel of poetry"
  • (in the water, their stirring creates the traditional image of two entwined pentacles.)

  • I love the King of Chalices "Njordr"with his great high forehead, Pavarotti cheeks, a laughing gaze, greying beard of distinction, wisdom and strength, and his long, long, pony tail.
  • The King of Wands "Surtr - Black" is also adorable with his beastly mane of curly black hair, and hairy bare chest!
  • But my absolute favorite card is Odin
  • (Wotan) as the Hierophant. He has his wanderer's crook and tall hat. His two ravens and two wolves stand by him as he sits on his tomb-like throne, sunken in deep, deep, reflection.

Alas, it seems that this deck hasn't been released in the US yet; I'm on the Tarot Garden preorder list, and Jeannette says it should arrive in June. Can't wait to see it, especially after this great review!

Hey, Firemaiden,
_this_ definetely sounds very promising!!!! I hope my package from Italy arrives soon...this deck has long been overdue...I have been waiting such a long time for its release...

Maybe we can launch a study-group on it????

I would appreciate that!

This is a deck I will definitely have to look at. Im pretty fascinated with norse mythology myself. Hopefully it will come to the US soon. =]

Just some notes: Valhalla is in Asgard, so you were right. =] I am pretty sure all of Asgard burns during the Ragnarok (end of the world)

Ive always seen it called the "mead of poetry" in case you were wondering what "hydromel" was. ;) Beer, beer, beer, tiddly beer, beer, beer....

Njordr is the god of wind, sea and fire... he is one of the older gods. One rather humorous story about him involves the giant Skadi (a winter goddess) Where she had a dispute with the gods. They had killed her father Thiazi, and in payment, she was allowed to have her pick of the bachelors among the gods. She had her eyes on Balder, god of light. However, when making her choice, she was only allowed to see her future husband's feet. (I have always seen it as "feet" though i suspect they meant feet in the more biblical sense) She found the prettiest, cleanest feat she could, but instead of Balder, she got Njord. They attempted the marriage, but ultimately they divorced and Skadi married the god of hunting, Ull.

Surtr is the god of fire giants, and was responsible for setting fire to the universe, at the ragnarok. Afterward, the world is reborn. On one hand, he has a very dark aspect to him, on the other he is much like the phoenix...

And odin, of course, the inspiration for Gandalf in Lord of the Rings... one of the few male gods capable of magic, (loki is the other) and a god who would give all for wisdom.

Oh, if you ever want to know about the characters of mythology, a great site is http://www.pantheon.org. It has a lot of information on norse mythology, as well as any kind of mythology you could want.

firemaiden  24 May 2003
Wow! Phoenix Down, that explains a lot!

Of course it would be delightful to have a study group on this deck, expecially to explore the norse mythology. The LWB in this case gives the essential information, that is - the name of who is represented, but not that which Phoenix Down has just shared -- who they are. The divinatory meanings are quite sketchy, but that's okay, because they work with the RWS model.

(Perhaps, Phoenix Down, you will have to write the book, if there isn't one already planned :))

firemaiden, Kevin Crossley-Holland has done quite a nice collection of Norse myths. It has comprehensive notes on his sources which is useful. I can recommend his writing in general, he has re-told many mths and legends, many of his books are 'for children' and I always ignore that.

I have it now!!

Odin as the Hierophant looks great. But my totally fave card is the knave of chalices, he is lovely with his friendly and dreamy face... Also like Temperance (Balder) but looks quite strange feeding the earth with blood...

Is still someone interested in a study group for this deck or are too much study groups going on at the moment?

Marion  02 Oct 2003
It's in the mail for me! I'll post when I get my hands on it!!

This deck is out in Hastings stores in the US!! (Had to pick it up. :) ) I'll definitely be in on the study group if and when it gets started.

Would you say this is the best deck using Norse mythology? I'm considering buying it because the few images I saw really appealed to me.

Dark_angel  04 Oct 2003
This deck's sooooo near the top of my wishlist - I love Scandinavian mythology, and I'd definitely say that this is the best deck I've seen so far based on it. Also, I don't think you'd need a knowledge of the mythology to use it, as the cards I've seen seem to be readable using simply the images. If anyone knows of any better ones, please say so, so I can spend more money! xxx
