Hello,

I have just purchased the Goddess Tarot on EBay. I am very familar with the Rider Waite deck but excited to learn about this new deck. Has anyone got any resources on the Goddess Tarot? Where can I learn more? Are there any study groups? Would anyone be interested in starting a study group?

I thought about starting a YahooGroup list on the Goddess Tarot, but thought I'd start here first!

Kris Waldherr, the creater of the The Goddess Tarot, has a website on the deck, at:
http://www.artandwords.com/goddesstarot1.html

Kris has also written "The Goddess Tarot Workbook", which you can purchase from her site, or from Amazon, at:

I have this deck, but I have only worked with a little bit. My study of it has been partly with the Workbook, which is not to bad. I have also started to research the goddess of the Major Arcana. Learning their stories and myths helps me to understand their cards a little better. Beyond that, the meanings for this deck follow the RWS deck pretty closely, so you can take what you already know and add to it pretty easily, I think.

Yes... there may even be other men who own this deck... who knows? But I do own The Goddess Tarot and I actually really like it. As Silverlotus mentioned, the meanings primarily follow the RWS cards, so it is no more difficult to read with, even easier, than some other RWS based decks. The one kind of tricky part is that the Page/Knight and Queen/King associations are reversed, giving the more feminine cards the more prominent positions. Thus, the Princess carries the Knight characteristics, and the Prince is in the place of the Page. And so also, the Queen has the "traditional" place of the King, while the King is below the Queen... uh so to speak.

I picked up this deck because I wanted to have a deck with a more feminine feel. This is primarily because I do more readings for women than for men and sometimes the reading needs a more feminine outlook. For instance, the Röhrig Tarot might not be a good deck for me to use for a woman who is asking about a relationship issue. However, the Goddess Tarot is extremely good for this. Anyway, I've employed the Goddess Tarot in numerous readings and it's always proved to be excellent.

Strange2; Thanks very much for pointing us to the web site...

This deck was the third I purchased and I have to say it's the deck I love and use the most... It's not about being a woman, it's because I love those colours and drawings.

Like Silverlotus pointed out, the LWB is fairly good, and once you get the story of the goddess, you can understand perfectly the meanings of the cards; and as Trogon said if you know the symbolism of RW, you'll find it easy to read with this deck.

I particularly love what she did with "death", which was renamed "transformation", and the stories behind all those goddess.

Hope you enjoy your deck as much as I'm enjoying mine. ;)

Thanks for the websites.

What are some good books to read about the goddesses?

I own this deck as well. I am learning with the R-W so I found it pretty easy to understand.
It has a soft feel to it. I've done a couple of readings with it, and it really talks to me. At first, I satyed away from this deck, I am not much a of a feminist and I thought I would lose some of the meaning of some cards where masculine energy is at play with a deck reflecting only the feminin side.
And yet, I absolutely love what the author has done with the cards, I like Transformation, and Temptation as well.
I definitely love this deck, it's one of my favourite!
I would be interested in a study group biddy 9.

The book I picked up is "The Book of Goddesses & Heroines" by Patricia Monaghan. This is an excellent book, in my opinion. Its in an encyclopedia style... with articles arranged alphabetically by the name of each goddess. The articles are, of course, somewhat short as this is all in one volume, but the information is excellent and it covers many cultures.

Hope this helps...

Oh.. ISBN:0-87542-573-9. It's published by Llewellyn Publications.

I like The Ancient and Shining Ones and Maiden, Mother, Crone by D.J. Conway. I'm not sure if they are still in print though. But they are good to look up a brief amount of information about a goddess.

I'd also suggest this website:
http://www.pantheon.org/mythica.html

You could also try searching Google for the goddess' name, and perhaps the name of her culture or another figure in her myths. For example "Isis Osiris Egypt myth" would turn up some interesting sites.

Last by not least I would suggest checking out some books about myths from your local library. If you find yourself drawn to a particular goddess' story, why not find a book of myths about her culture. I've got no suggestions for particular books, but if you have an okay library systems, there are surely going to be a couple of good boks about myth.

Good luck! :)

A little late to this discussion. I purchased this deck because it has the goddess Rhiannon on the Movement (VII Chariot) card. I've felt a special closeness to this goddess ever since I first learned of her. (No, I'm not a horse person--I have other reasons.) I've also always identified with the Chariot card, so I had to have this deck once I learned about that. :)

At first I found the deck too soft, but let me tell you it has given me some readings that made me do a lot of self-evaluation, and face what I'm doing to create the situations in my own life. It's great for relationship readings, as Trogon says, and I don't find it too feminine in its slant. Since it closely follows RWS it's also easy to learn to use. It's an attractive deck. The artwork, although not as detailed as I usually like, is beautifully done and meaningful to me, even though I'm not yet familiar with many of the goddesses in it.

I purchased the workbook with it, and downloaded the 26-page pdf booklet from the author's web site. (Link given above by Strange2.)

I'm happy to have this deck as a part of my collection, and as an insightful deck to read with on a regular basis.

if you want to check out other aeclectic threads on the goddess deck, please check out the sticky demonesse posted towards the top of the deck section called "please check for other threads on a deck before you start a new one". inside the thread is a list of lots of other deck including the goddess that there are earlier comments about the goddess.
