Elle! That is great news! I love my Victoria Regina! I love the historic art used in it and it gives such great readings... I think you're going to be extremely happy with it.

Oooooh, lucky you! I am curious about this deck. It looks like a good one for intuitive readings and I love the Moon card and Temperance. If I can't find someone to trade for this one soon I may have to buy it.
What fun it is to eagerly wait for a new deck!

It is a stunning deck, the artwork is beautiful. I love the Chariot and the use of pens as wands.
Why did I trade it? I'm not a collector, I don't want to keep what I can't/won't use. I had trouble with the size, coating and visuals in the cards. They're large and very heavily coated. It made them difficult for me to shuffle. Each time I tried to use them I wound up playing 78 card pick up and cursing myself and the deck (I think those Victorians were offended! }) )
Visually, for starters about me: I'm 42 and probably need bifocals. I had trouble with the deck being all black and white and composed of lots of tiny little lines. Made it visually distracting. I had to pick up each card and say "Oh, that's what it is!" Couldn't just look at a spread and get a general overview.
So I sent it off to what I hope will be a more appreciative home.
It's a great deck, I hope it works for you!

Well, I am really excited about receiving this deck Woof, I really like the art work.
I don't know how good it will be for reading but it's been on my wishlist for a while now.
I like the etching technic and the black and whiteness of the deck.
I have long fingers (for a girl) so I hope it won't give me grief for shuffling.
I guess we will know soon.

We should all report back when it arrives and share our impressions!
Many thanks for expressing and sharing such enthusiasm!

Received my Victoria Regina yesterday and stayed up all night to make friends with it.
The first reading said I would be poor and don't bother to go forward with my studies because it will be of no use. In effect calling me stupid and unteachable! I faintly recall someone else on the site complaining their deck made fun of them too.
Who knows, maybe it was my fear or consternation that it was picking up and throwing back at me...

For some reason I have a suspicion there's a predictive bent to some old-fashioned meanings that could actually be read in a better way.
I'm not an experienced reader, but I've played with some old-fashioned card systems--and the little that I've seen of the Victoria Regina reminds me of a modern deck.
Maybe a comparative reading with another deck might assist, or just another look at the cards. In one instance, I had a V-R reading where the actress in the picture was more significant than the actual tarot symbol. (It may have been Francis Farr, an actress who helped promote the Golden Dawn and someone who helped Pamela Colman Smith get artist training)
And sometimes decks are reflective, especially if we're very tired. To be honest, I KNEW a deck was on it's way to me this morning (I paid expedited shipping) and kept waking up every few hours...I started cleaning my bookshelves..and when the aged, tiny mailman delivered regular mail and I saw him walking away, I was sighing sadly. Then he came back and delivered not one, but most of my expected shipments!
And then I pulled out the Hanged Man card, first thing. I grinned, because it reminded me how I had just felt--left hanging!
I'll look for your post if you remember the cards that you pulled last night...if you aren't too tired.

Thanks Mari, but I lay spreads all day long and hardly save any to notes. Only my first spread of the morning before coffee - the most accurate always!
It was all Pentacles and Courts - maybe I just didn't shuffle well. Those Victoia Regina are quite large!
I promise to post a spread next time I use them and you can take a look at it if you would like.
Good Luck with your new cards and hope you enjoy them!

Who knows, maybe it was my fear or consternation that it was picking up and throwing back at me... Hmmm... It could be that the cards were mirroring your feelings and trying to say these are issues you need to look at? I have found this to be the case with my self readings on several occasions. Could it be that your new VR deck was saying that you have these issues of self doubt, perhaps in regards to just your first impressions of the deck? This is just a thought that occurred to me when I read your post. Without knowing which cards you had gotten, its difficult to say.

Yes, Trogon. Right now my top two concerns are my financial future and my education- fear of course is part of the equation and it showed! I am sure the cards were trying to tell me to focus more closely on these issues...
Thanks,

Hi Elle,
I don't usually do the new deck spread until I've had the deck for at least a week, got to know it and shuffled it well. I always seem to get strange readings when I try to do the new deck spread straight away - eg, what can you teach me - The tower or What will our relationship be like - The Hanged Man lol - not good :D - No matter how positively you try to look at these cards it doesn't work lol
But do the spread when the deck has been used a few times and you'll get a much more honest reading.

Yes, Emily. And the Victoria Regina is known to be brutally honest and "in your face" - exactly what I was looking for - a sharp shooter to get me in gear!
I think it will warm up to me...
Thanks,
Elle

Hi Elle,
The book is good too, I was always into 'Victoriana' and hoped that I would get on well with this deck but I found the size too daunting, I only have small hands and always seemed to be dropping cards instead of shuffling, then I noticed that the rifles instead of swords was bothering me and after a few more uses the deck has just become part of my collection.
I do still get it out to look at but can't remember the last time I did a reading with it.
But as you say it is honest and very in your face, I hope you get on well with it, it is a nice deck but it didn't call to me like it has to you :)

For large cards you can always "shuffle" by dealing out seven cards and then continue to put one card on each pile until the whole pack is dealt, then put them all into one stack. It is a very meditative way to shuffle, no danger of dropped cards or bent cards.
The rifles would probably bother me as well, it is part of why I have not picked up this set yet. But then I thought, well in a way they are *supposed* to bother you. Swords don't bother us because they are not part of our experience but they
used to be used to kill people and as a symbol of rank and dominance. It might be interesting to use a deck that used a symbol that is less safe and historical. For me it would skew the suit toward "trouble and conflict" rather than thought processes and logic, but that might work out.
