The rws is being re-coloured all the time, there are a lot of variations about and now there is even a deck being published with additional images etc.
Now I can understand why people want a more attractive colouring than the original, I am just wondering...is there no copyright on this deck ? Can anyone just take this deck and make alterations, or has someone given them permission to do so ?
Just wondering about this, as there are so many variations on this deck !

I have become very interested in this deck because it seems to be THE deck one imagines when the word 'tarot' is said- except me. So I'm the last person who should comment here, but, here it is any way. Perhaps there was never was a copywrite. I know that after so many years a patten(sp?) turns 'public'. And then there are those 'bodies' like Mercades that develops something, 'owns' the idea, but lets others use it freely.

You raise some interesting questions.
I think that copyright may actually cease after 50 years but I am not absolutely sure of this. And how much does RWS owe to earlier decks such as the Marseilles, at least in terms of the Majors, and the overall concept of Tarot?
Are the 10 Commandments copyright to God or to whom? This is intended to be an ironic question :) Can the tarot be copyright to any one, when just one slight variation could mean it is actually a new deck?
I think I've asked more questions than I've answered but I do have a feeling that copyright, if it ever existed, is well and truly passed now.
