WARNING: I've been thinking! :D
I am anxiously awaiting the availability of the Radiant Rider Waite, said to be due out sometime next month. There hasn't been much to go on as far as what this deck looks like, though, so the mystery has me wondering if it will compete with my current RWS-type favorites. The RWS and it's clones have pretty loyal users.
In fact, I'm quite dedicated to my Golden Rider and my Royal Fez Morrocan, so this New Kid in Town will have to be VERY good for me to oust one of those...
What, if any, are your favorite RWS or RWS-inspired tarot decks?
Are you pretty devoted to your favorite(s), or are you ready for something new?
Peace,
T.
(Edited to add: I just read, in the thread about the Radiant Rider Waite, that the release date on it has been delayed until the end of August. :(
My Golden Rider and Royal Fez are breathing much easier...for now... }) )

My usual answer for polls like this .... The 1971 Rider-Waite deck, of course -- In terms of its colours, images and card titles, it's the closest available to the first Rider deck.

I'll say the Universal Waite; for a deck I don't yet have, the Golden Rider; and for a Waite-Style, I'll pick Robin Ator's unpublished International Icon Tarot. (get it out! get it out! Hurry!)

My fav recoloured RWS would be the Universal RW. I only have the tiny version, but I do love it. :)
RWS-style... that's a hard one. I guess I would say the Robin Wood, which is RWS with a Pagan flare. But the Hanson-Roberts is pretty easy on the eyes too.

Hmm... well, like Rusty Neon, my old stand-by 1971 U.S.G. Rider-Waite deck is a solid favorite. As for a RWS inspired deck... hmmm... thats a bit tougher. I guess I'd have to say its a toss-up between the Spiral Tarot and the Victoria Regina Tarot. Toss-up because they are so different, though they both still follow the RWS pattern fairly well, with a few radical departures to make them interesting... ;)
I do not, as yet, have any of the recolored versions of the Rider-Waite which I am using. I do have my mother's old Albano-Waite deck (from the late '60's) but those cards are not terribly well made, so I am not actively using that deck. I am seriously considering that Radiant deck though.

I only have an ugly-coloured version of the rider-waite now, but I think some day I will want to study this deck again and I will get another one. I will wait until the Radiant rw becomes available, and then decide if I want that one or the Universal.
And rws inspired - I am beginning to look with interest to the hanson-roberts now. But I still think my favourite is the Halloween.

Aah... the Halloween... Been on my wishlist for ages! :D
I'm waiting for an Amazon gift certificate that should come my way soon, then I might finally order it - I think it stands a good chance of becoming my favourite RWS-alike!
But, in the mean time; my favourite RWS-inspired deck is the Royal Fez Moroccan. A gentle, subtle version, with a quiet beauty all it's own.
Great for reading, looks very 'classic' somehow, and it actually turns out to be good for meditation and study as well.
Edited to add: I'm also looking forward to the Radiant RWS!

I think my favourites would have to be the Universal Waite, I like the look of the original Rider Waite, which I have, but the re-coloured version is much easier on the eye and my other favourite RWS clone would have to be the Spiral with its vibrant colours and varied style :)

I use an old, beat-up, discolored, and smudged Albano-Waite. Can't seem to give it up - there are two brand new decks waiting for me, but this deck calls to me. It is so reliable, too.

I'm with Elle. I like my Albano-Waite. The colors are not as stark as the RWS. However, the pocket-sized RWS will always have a place in my heart.

Many of you have sited RWS versions published in the sixties and seventies...
How does one discern whether or not a deck is that old, especially a US Games deck?

Tarot of Prague will become another favourite.
I'm busy getting to know the deck, and we seem to like each other!

Oh, this is just too hard!
I love all my RWS clones and restyles!
And I owe so much to my original RWS too!
But if I gotta choose....I love the Aquarian.
And I adore the Hanson Roberts...
And the Wonderland deck is just too much fun!

1. The 1971 Rider Waite doesn't have any other dates after the copyright and the box has wording related to Sybil Waite, I believe. Holly Volly's Rider Waite site has information and I'll try to get a link. I bought mine off e-bay once I found a seller who'd answer my question about the card box wording.
http://home.comcast.net/~vilex/USGames.html
If it does matter to you, the wording for the 1971 version on the box:
From what is written on the box the common deck (yellow box, ©1971) comes in is stated the following:
"The original and only authorized edition of the famous 78-card Tarot Deck designed by PAMELA COLMAN SMITH under the direction of ARTHUR EDWARD WAITE
~
Reissued in collaboration with Miss Sybil Waite and Rider & Company, London"
2. The Diamond Tarot is a recolored almost clone that I like to play with at times.
3. I like the Giant size version when I want to examine detail-the 1992 version?
4. Not really that close, but meditative and lacy, The Enchanted Tarot.
5. My favorite one so far every day is the R. DeAngelis version by Lo Scarabeo to use with the Special Topics in the Tarot book on Tarot and Dreams. The LS Universal Tarots illustrates the book. Different take, but at least I'm not looking at everyone's backside through the eyes of humerous twins as in Tarot of the New Vision.
Interesting though, I like the color of the Tarot of the New Vision, and I'm thinking of doing what someone suggested: Mix this deck up with my LS Universal and use it as 'reversal'. There's a sense of humor in a reading like this.
Hope you take these suggestions with a bit of humor.

My favorite RWS Clone is called The Illuminating Tarot, they are beautiful. Here is the link, you can click on any card and see a really large picture of the card.

I am also waiting for the Radiant, and the Tarot of the New Visions looks really awsome. Has any one heard of or owns the Tarot Chesta? Kinda expensive but here is a link with pictures, they look really interesting.

There are two editions of the 1971 Rider Waite...on Holly Volley's tarot site, the one in the middle has a newer typeface. In that one, the instruction book is coated, the lamination on the deck is smooth and the address for U.S. Games is the their Stamford, CT office.
There are some delicate differences in the earlier 1971 printing, which I discovered last night and today in comparing a used bookstore find and the older one that I am keeping.
------------------------------------------------
The earlier 1971 version with the following details:
1) There is no ISBN number stamped on the bottom of the box. The text is essentially the same, but an added bullet of Accurate Color Tones is on the bottom flap.
2) The office address for the U.S. Games is New York, NY 10016.
3) The little white book does not have coating on the 44 pages.
4) There is no copyright notice on the sides of the cards. The copyright was pending while this edition was distributed.
5) While the box cover might have a bit of variation, the cards themselves are uniformly lighter in tone and the gray background area where the majors are typed are lighter than the later 1971
version and later yellow box versions that I see in stores.
6) The finish seems lighter, more of a matte feel than a laminated smoothness. I think this deck might be a little more worn, althought the colors seem fairly smooth and no chipping in the finish or corners.
All in all, I like the feel and using the earlier 1971 version...seems like this is an older deck and so it doesn't feel as plastic as newer, slicker versions--like my giant RWS that I use sometimes to compare bigger deck cards...

I prefer the 1971 Rider-Waite over today's Rider-Waite: typeface of the titles and colours. I own the 1971 deck; I only know today's deck through scans on the net. However, I would prefer coating on the cards of the 1971 deck. I find that I'm somewhat allergic to the ink; so perhaps coating would help.

1) The Tarot Sutra: my standby, never-fail, when-I-really-need-it-to -be clear deck
2) The Sharman-Caselli tarot: I have 4 copies of this deck. Easy to read, reliable, and unlikely to offend anyone you might be reading for
3) Radiant Rider-Waite: the colors are beautiful, not overbright, and little details catch my eye more often than with other decks
4) The Gilded Tarot: I splurged and got this. I seem to be having a little trouble reading with it, but the cards are undeniably gorgeous.
I have other RWS clones, and many other decks in my collection, but the top two are by far the ones I read with most often. I really wish I could get my hands on a copy of the 1973 Dynamic Games RWS tarot, but I've never seen it for sale anywhere.

of the Rider Waite using the Tarot Sutra book...the childlike illustrations of the regular Rider Waite seem rather different in style...thanks for letting me know of the different titles, especially the Dynamic Rider Waite game.
Once in awhile if you keep your eyes out on abebooks.com and know a title variation, something comes up for a reasonable price.
Mari H.
P.S. The recoloring on the cards is very pretty and from what I read, the book suggest ways to enhance your senses and awareness. I'd rather just have the recolored cards, no subtitles...although if someone wanted to paint or write with a more focused intensity, from the inside out, I could see how they be creative with the phrases for inspiration.
Recolored cards,

Although I posted earlier, about 3 months ago, I have to add the Morgan Greer as my favourite clone deck now - I've only just took delivery of this deck, about a week now I think but it seems like forever, and the images are powerful with the closeness and the colouring. It gives a very different feel to symbolism that is familiar and readable.

Well I've never really been into Rider-Waite clones. The only one I've ever used is the New Palladini and I find that a bit cold.
I've had the Morgan Greer for a few days though and I have to say that I'm in love. I'm getting loads of new insights from it, especially with the courts. This deck feels like an old friend so I have a favorite RWS clone now.
Love and light
