Why have you traded decks?

While reading Faunabay's post of downsizing her collection, I thought about why I have traded some of my decks and thought it would be interesting if everybody posted why they have also.
I used to have:
Golden Dawn Tarot- Cicero
Fairy Ring Oracle
Medieval Scampini
Celtic Tarot-LoScarobeo
The Golden Dawn Tarot was one of the first tarot decks I ever bought. I bought it back in the 80's when I first started getting interested in tarot and since it was the only one at my local bookstore I bought it. I never connected with it because it had pips and wasn't a good deck to start with as a beginner. I just never connected with it all. Now thanks to Aeclectic I can see scans and read some reviews before buying a deck in a package sight unseen.
Fairy Ring Oracle was one I wanted since I loved Brian Froud's Faery Oracle so much. However, after reading the book the deck gave me nightmares...lol.
Medieval Scampini seemed nice by the photos I saw but I guess I didn't like the comedy aspect to how some of the minors were portrayed.
Celtic Tarot by LoScarobeo was recommended by someone from a tarot discussion group I belonged to. The deck repulsed me. There was too much blood and gore for me. It had to go.
Besides those 4 I have had luck with all the other 40 decks I own.
What decks have you traded/sold and what was your reason?
Blessings,

I traded three decks:
Art Nouveau (Lo Scarabeo)
Zerner-Farber
Robin Wood
The Art Nouveau was a big disappointment. I had bought it because I really liked the artwork, but when I got the deck, I just thought it was all the same. Yes, the artwork was nice, but 78 very similar images was a bit too much... LOL
The Zerner-Farber, well, I don't know why I got it in the first place, because it just isn't my type of deck: too fluffly, too... lilac! ;) I kept it for quite a while though, until I recently went through my decks and decided there was no reason whatsoever why I should hang on to it.
Finally the Robin Wood: I never liked the artwork, but after reading the interview with Robin Wood here on Aeclectic I got interested in her views and decided her deck might be interesting after all. I only used it a few times though; however interesting Robin Wood's ideas, I still didn't like the artwork and that sort of stood in the way of me actually using the deck.
I've developed the following criteria over time for holding onto a deck:- I actually use the deck
(obviously... ;) ) - e.g. World Spirit
- I really like the artwork - e.g. Old English
- I like the theme or concept of the deck
(including the artwork, obviously) - e.g. Rock & Roll and Australian Dreamtime
- The deck has a special meaning for me, for example because it was a gift - e.g. Tarot of the Old Path
If a deck doesn't meet any of these categories, it's out... :D

I usually think pretty carefully about what I buy, so I've only traded one deck. I traded Tarot of the III Millennium for the simple reason that I didn't care for the person who recommended it to me. The deck itself is a beautiful art deck and worth keeping in other circumstances.
I traded for The Flower Speaks because it has all the wonderful and much-loved plants that my husband and I have had over the years in our gardens, and the December Rose card has a beautiful association with my dead Mother which was a happy discovery.
I felt the trade was worth it although there was nothing really wrong with the Tarot of the III Millennium. I've never really bought a deck I didn't like. How's that for discipline?

I traded my Thoths away because I wasn't using them and they just didn't seem to click with where I was/ am.
Also the 'All is One' deck, again because I didn't have any feel for it at all. Much the same as the Thoth: all I did was spend energy feeling guilty because I didn't like them.
All my other decks I either
a) love to bits
b) like and just can't imagine wanting to let them go - they please me and I take pleasure in looking through them. The Fairy Oracle deck falls into this category, it does scare me as well though and I still haven't read with it
c) came back to me so I supposed I ought to have (the Merlin, tried to trade then my husband bought it for me)

I've sold or traded more decks than I currently own! This would be a very long post if I went into a specific reason for each of them, but generally my reasons are one or more of the following:
1) Renaming/reordering of Major Arcana
This is a pet peeve of mine. If you're going to come up with your own system, fine, but don't call it Tarot. The Sacred Circle Tarot is the most egregious example of this that I've owned. I loved the artwork, but I just had to let it go! Other examples are Tarot of the Old Path and Faery Wicca Tarot.
2) Trying too hard to fit Tarot into the chosen theme
This can be related to #1, or it can be a separate issue. I ultimately decided I don't like themed decks. Imposing another system on Tarot is never going to be a perfect fit, so I'd rather Tarot stayed Tarot and let Alchemy/Astrology/Arthurian mythology etc. do their own thing. I don't mind decks that are geared toward a certain type of artwork (e.g. Art Nouveau) but I'd rather not have decks that are geared toward a particular culture, mythology, or belief system. Decks I've let go for thematic reasons include Legend: The Arthurian Tarot and Alchemical Tarot.
3) Artwork
I collect decks for the artwork, and over time some decks just cease to appeal to me. Because I limit my collection to 22 decks, there have been many I have let go to make room for another deck I liked better. Examples: Arcus Arcanum Tarot, Tarot of the Stars.
I posted a pretty detailed list of my criteria for collecting on another list, so I'll see if I can dig that up and add to this.

I just traded my Fantastical. I bought it on a whim when I renewed my interest in tarot. I was captivated by the artwork, but realized I could never really read with the deck because the cards didn't really convey any meanings to me. The artwork is beautiful, but too stylized.
Now I'm very careful about buying decks. I tend to get infatuated *very* quickly but then it burns out fast.
I'm contemplating getting the osho zen right now, but I'll wait and see if my infatuation lasts before I run out and buy it.

I must admit I trade mostly when I see someone wants something and I realise I don't much want to keep it. In other words, I am a kind of passive trader, not an active one LOL.
I traded the Cosmic Tribe not because I particularly wanted to be rid of it, but because I knew I would never really much like it and that on the other hand some people both love it and use it.
It's the same with decks I see in shops (like the one I have on trade right now) that I offer but will only buy if it turns out someone really wants it. It's no use to me but I just feel it's a shame if it turns out someone else badly wants it - better to at least offer than find out too late that someone here has been searching for years - I think most of us here think that way.
Have I ever had any decks that I just HAVE to trade away because I dislike them so much? To be honest, not really. I'm quite careful what I buy and usually I go on at least finding something good about most decks. On the other hand there are some decks where I have duplicates - so those I trade sooner or later.
There are of course decks that end up being put to one side - like my Victoria Regina - that I don't really read with now. But mostly they do come out at least to be looked at, so for now I don't imagine trading them.
On the other hand - I suppose I could be induced to trade almost anything if the right deck came up! But couldn't we all? :-)

Decks I traded away:
Both Art Nouveau decks.
Bought them for the lovely artwork, but in the end that was all I saw in the decks and that was not enough to keep them.
Fantastical tarot.
I did not like the people, they looked more like caricatures (starved caricatures :D) to me. Plus the hanged man was hanging by the neck, which I hate.
Tarot of the Spirit.
Loved the artwork, but I bought it too early in my tarot career and could not make head nor tails of it.
I got it back now and love it ! (but now I also have the book)
Goddess Tarot.
I got it in a trade just as a try-out, but I never really got the hang of it. I don't really like an all female deck, and I don't think the pictures show the meaning very well.
Gendron Tarot.
When I saw the minors I knew I had made a mistake...
Now I have a nice collection I don't feel the urge to buy decks quickly and make less mistakes.
I still have a few decks that may qualify for trading, but I am not in a hurry to get rid of them.

I have traded away a few.
The Gendron and The Goddess tarots were the first to go. At that time, the Gendron had a lot of talk around it and folks were ecstatic. I learned from that that I do not like photo-collage decks. The Goddess just didn't like. Each went to people who professed they loved the decks, but I think that at least Gendron moved on again..
I traded away both the Thoth and the Enochian because I could not accept their underlying philosophy (that's not exactly what I mean but I cannot think of a better way to phrase it).
Traded away Tarot of the Hidden Folk to Tauni who was also freaked out by it and I think she re-traded it. Which is fair because she traded me the Merlin Tarot which I don't like because of the un-tarotic numbering system but have not gotten around to trading it yet.
I have tried to trade away the Angel Oracle twice and gotten no takers, actually I think that with any incentive I would trade away any of my oracle decks except the Virtue ones.

I don't like having decks I don't get on with. These have included:
Visconti Gold (really don't like many of the pictures)
Inner Child Cards (too large :) )
Art Nouveau (Myers one - didn't like the minors)
Some decks I have liked but I just didn't want to keep. Eg, I got the Shakesperian in a trade in return for the Pagan 2000. The Shakespearian was a lovely deck in many ways, and more valuable than the deck I traded, but I couldn't use it. So I traded it back for a Universal Waite as I had traded mine away ... That was a really good trading experience, as I felt the Shakespearian had just been on loan to me and it was lovely to see it 'in the flesh'.
I traded away the Goddess because I couldn't use it to read with. I got the best of that trade, because I got the Ancestral Path in French which is a wonderful deck.
I traded away the Cosmic partly because it was in German ...
And a Hanson-Roberts I had bought because ... well, complicated reasons but it was a duplicate deck :)
I currently have few decks that I could bear to part with, so if a good trade comes up I shall be trading again.
I love trading with aeclectic people :) The decks are so special and come with such good vibes.

Well as you saw in my other post I've traded way too many to list them separately. :D
But for the most part I trade for three different reasons.
1) I didn't connect with the deck from the start and wanted it to go to someone who'd actually use/enjoy it more than me.
2) I wanted the deck I was trading for more than the one I would trade. :)
3) And sometimes it just comes down to -- I got what I needed from the deck and it was time to move on.

There are simply too many decks that I have traded or sold to discuss here. Also, the reasons are pretty boring, anyway. It's kind of along the same lines as faunabay's three reasons...I didn't connect w/ the deck, I wanted whatever was being offered more, I needed more space...usually, "all of the above."
There are three tarots that fellow tarophiles might specifically ask "Why'd you give that one up?" The Jungian, Healing Earth, and Greenwood sets have all been in my collection, back when I was manically amassing decks. I never liked the art on the Jungian, and I never intended to use it (but the book was quite good); I just liked that I found it at a second-hand shop for $15! I found the Healing Earth set there, too--$15, great shape, etc. I really liked that deck, except for the extra suits and the width of the cards, but I finally gave it up when I realized there wasn't gonna be a way for me to use it. I bought the Greenwood at Borders (before I knew better than to buy decks new before trying to trade), and never got past the inconsistency of the art between the majors and the minors.
I've tightened up on my standards for "keep" versus "release," but I also still enjoy the occasional trade, when it's just time to move something along.

I`ve only taded 2 decks:
Robin Wood - Just didn`t like anything about it really. I tought that the card backs didn't match the fronts, there were too many blue eyed, blonde haired smiley, happy people and the overall feel of the deck was very 'fluffy wicca'. I also new that whoever got it would probably love it as it`s a very popular deck - they did.
The Witches Tarot by Elen Cannon-Reed - This was my first deck and I found that it strayed too far from traditional card meanings for me as I was just starting out.
I also found the court cards and the swords / fire, wands / air correspondences very confusing.
Oh and those green speedos ewwwwwwwwww, enough said.

i've traded so many that i can't remember why i traded the majority. probably because i didn't like the deck or couldn't work with it or i thought the deck was ugly. i've even traded a deck i wanted b/c i thought someone else wanted it more than me. i won't do that again though. now someone else has that deck and the chances of me getting it back are between slim and none.

Why? Because it's just as much fun as buying new decks - more so, in fact: you get to communicate personally with other Aeclectians rather than just hand your deck over to a disinterested store clerk! And because that way you sometimes get offered decks you haven't seen in the shops or online before. And because you get satisfaction knowing that you're passing on something you don't want/have no further need for to someone who does want it/can trade it on if it doesn't appeal to them after all. In fact, I think it should be called "Tarot Bartering" rather than "Trading" because that gives it more of a true feel. Or is it "Haggling".............?!

i bought the scapini deck because i loved the golden look of it and at the time wanted a'real' deck , the bookstore was limited and very new-agey, there wer native american decks , collage decks , i wanted something i knew...
and l loved the court cards and the majors
but never in 5 years was comfortable with the pips
so I traded it here for ancestral tarot
and i absolutley loved the wands suit and the swords suit
and the disks suite was going to take some getting used to but in a good way
BUT
i could not accept the arthurian cups...go figure, why is a frightened teenage guinevere a queen and a powerful radient sorceress Morgana a princess...and that was just the begining
so i traded it for cat people cause i thought i would be kinder to fantasy than to art or mythology
i'll update this when i get my package :-)

Actual trading seems like too much of a hassle for me. I have given away two decks to people, because I didn't like the decks and my friends did.
Tarot of the Cloisters -- all the black lines made me crazy and a friend liked it.
Goddess Tarot -- I just found it kind of boring. My daughter was looking through my decks and liked it a lot, so I gave it to her.
I also gave her the Glastonbury deck and books, because she liked those a lot. I found I couldn't live without the Glastonbury, and bought another set.

Specifically, I like aeclectic people and I'm glad we share tarot interests. So I'm willing once in awhile to deal with trading, although most people are right, it can be quite a hassle when I'm in busy mode.
But there are just decks where the art seems to only work with me in limited ways, for different reasons. Because of tarot artists involved, I'll be vague. Also, because my studies differ from month to month, it takes awhile for me to find out if the deck works for me. Once in awhile a deck can give great readings for others, but just not be interesting enough for me to keep for more than a few months.

I actually had to sit back and think about this matter for a while.
I have "traded" decks recently, but never really thought about the reasoning behind it.
What's so funny about this is that I am a collecting freak...the more I have of something the better! And usually I never get rid of ANYTHING...because once something is gone, I usually regret it, and then I desperately try and replace it, which almost never works.
But this is not the case with Tarot decks.
I can't really say that I have traded them, since I really didn't send them off expecting to get a deck in return.
But I guess the original reason (I thought) was so I could make room for all the new wonderful decks that are now out there that I drool over constantly(but still have not yet had the money to buy!)
I gave away my Faery Wicca, because although I think it is a lovely deck, I kept tripping over all the Celtic names, and it hindered my reading with it...and then someone here gave me an awesome reading, and when I found out she only had one tarot deck, I decided she needed another to play with! (and she really enjoys it, which just makes me feel really good!)
I let go of my Hoi Polloi for a completely different reason, which was not at all clear at the time...The reason I held onto it for so long was because I remembered an old friend, who I no longer speak to for a wide varierty of reasons, had always liked it. Long ago, he had told me that he always wanted to find one of these decks again, but that they were hard to come by. Then there was an ending to our friendship, and when I found this deck later, I just felt so smug and satisfied that I had something that he did not!
What a lousy reason to hold onto a thing...and those feelings of arrogance are not so good to hold onto either!
I had been thinking about him strongly, and how I should really forgive the whole situation, when I discovered that someone on Aeclectic wanted the deck.
So I sent it along, around about the same time I started forgiving a lot of things that have happened in the past.
Giving up the Hoi Polloi had become a cathartic feeling of release, on a couple of levels.
And now, lately I just have been giving away decks to people simply because they are students, and new to tarot, with that eagerness and thrill and anticipation that I love to see, and experience myself everytime I get a new deck! and because they like a particular deck that I have.
but now I have all these gaps in my bookcase that I have to fill up again! (LOL!)

I trade for various reasons:
a) I love trading with a.netties as it is so personal and interesting
b) I cannot get this special deck here in Gemany
c) sometimes a deck does not click with me
d) I want this deck
e) I want the deck to have a person who can work with it or who loves it more than I do

If a deck is in my collection, it's there to stay. The only time I've traded was when I had a duplicate deck, and had a chance to get one I didn't have. There have been plenty of times when I've traded money for a deck, but that's not the typical definition of a trade.

Hello!
I have been just been collecting Tarot cards for about a year. My first tarot was the Mythic Tarot, I wasn't sure what to look for when I got them and figured the bigger the package that they came in, the better the book that came with it would be. Although I used them for about a month, and started to collect other deck that I use more.
I finally gave them away as a gift to someone that was looking to learn the tarot.
The second deck that I "gave" away was the Gendron deck. I liked the images that I saw online, but when I opened them and saw the photo images on some of the cards it was an instant turn off and gave them away.

I've never traded any, but someday I'd like to get rid of both Art Nouveau tarots, and the Waking the Wild Spirit. They are all ones I thought I'd like, but hated as soon as I opened them. I haven't seen anyone who likes the Art Nouveau ones, but I know some people on here like the Wild Spirit, so I figure someday they'll fall into the hands of the right person :).

I just gave my World Spirit tarot deck to a neophyte yesterday. She was looking at all the decks my husband and I have collected and she immediately connected with those. Up until I gave them to her, they were my working deck. The World Spirit and I have a love/hate relationship. Though we connected deeply, I avoided getting it out! I stopped studying tarot as soon as I got the deck and gave a lot fewer readings. Giving it away just felt extremely right. The girl I gave it to will appreciate it much more than I.
I have to admit that though I will miss that deck, I used it as an excuse to buy the Druidcraft tarot this morning. (after all, a tarot reader can't possibly go "deckless"! I have other decks, but I only work with one at a time.) When I had it on preorder, April seemed forever away, but now waiting two weeks for the Druidcraft is causing me to look at the calendar every ten minutes!

Wow, you gave away your working deck - what a very lovely (or mad ;))person you are.
I know what you mean about having a love / hate relationship with the World Spirit - I'm like that with it too. I love the deck but I just can't stand some of the cards - The Sun and The Star and the 3 of Swords are 3 I particularly dislike.
It was my main reading deck for a year or so but I use my Morgan Greer and the glorious DruidCraft the most now.
Couldn't give it away though. I'm impressed with your generosity :D

I fully expected to hang onto that deck, but something about this girl had my deck screaming to be given away. Who am I to argue with the tarot when I could hear it calling from inside its wooden box all the way across the room? It was like a big weight was lifted off my chest. I fully intend on replacing the deck at some point, but at the moment, I'm just anxiously awaiting my new working deck.

After joining AT, I went through a period of addictive tarot shopping, to put it mildly. :) So, of course, I had decks I didn't connect with.
I traded away the Cosmic Tribe, the Shining Tribe -- didn't connect with either of them, although I thought I would like Rachel Pollack's deck as I enjoyed her books.
The Zerner-Farber -- just way too froofy for me. I thought I would like it because of the textile art, but too lilac, too sentimental. I just put it back in the box.
The Fairy Wicca is another one I traded -- just couldn't make head or tails of it, and didn't want to take the time to learn the system. I guess some people really connect with this deck, so I hope it's loved where it is.
I'm trying to be more selective about the decks I acquire -- but sometimes I don't have the discipline. At least now I know if I get a deck I don't like, I can trade it or give it away.

Well I had the Voyager Tarot for years sitting on a shelf. I thought it was pretty but just way too confusing to learn tarot with. Once I decided to really learn tarot I aquired the Gilded Deck. Turns out one of my best friends LOVES the Voyager deck...so guess what she got for a Yule gift...Voyager Tarot.
I also am looking to do something with the Gendron deck. Liked the images online, bought it and just don't get it... oh well.
I've had really good luck so far with the decks I gotten overall.
I'd rather give the decks as gifts but trading or selling would be ok.

This was probably the second or third deck I ever owned, and I ended up selling it to someone in my classes. Now I wish that I hadn't so I could use it as an example, but I'm not going to go out and buy a second copy of a deck I didn't like!
I thought the Peter Maxx - style drawings were O.K. but a little TOO cutsey! The Minors left much to be desired - the 5 Wands was 5 trees in a forest, the 6 Wands was 6 trees in a forest -- way too boring and easy to get confused.
I also tried selling - but was unsuccessful in selling - The Witches Tarot by Ellen Cannon Reed - never could connect to it, even after buying and reading both her books- although they did help me understand it. It is the deck I ended up using as the deck in my first public reading - so maybe I'll keep it for the momento!

I moved from Florida to DC a few years ago, and since I really dislike packing and unpacking, I gathered up my entire metaphysical library and all but my primary Tarot deck, and took them to my going away party. As I spoke with all my friends that evening, I gifted out my entire collection (over 20 decks at the time). I had a blast connecting decks and books with all my crazy friends.
At any rate, I'm back in Florida, and two of my old decks have found me again, now that they know I'm settled in and not moving ... for a while (I'm a Sag ... stationary only lasts so long).
I do have a Tarot of the Gnomes that makes me laugh, but is otherwise quite useless in my hands. I seem to recall purchasing it under the influence of mead. Note to self ... don't drink and scry.

Most of my Tarot collecting occurred when I was new to it and didn't have a fully developed sense of what would be important to me. I thought that buying decks for the art would be enough but as I studied more, I realized that it wasn't. I still have a few that I like exclusively for the art, but I'm much more picky about what I buy. A deck has to make sense to me numerologically and I prefer decks where the pips don't portray a specific scene. I've found that I don't care for photo collage or computer generated decks. Also, when I first began accumulating decks, it became apparent that many times only the best cards in the deck are scanned, and more than a few times, I'd open a much anticipated deck, only to find that it wasn't what I thought it was going to be. It's much easier now to find sites where the entire deck is shown, so I haven't made that mistake again.
Gendron- Minors were a disappointment; didn't seem to match majors
Spiral- Ditto above
BOTA- Never used it -don't care for RW and clones anymore
Secret- Too much like RW- didn't connect
Art Nouveau- Gift from a friend-wanted the Myers one and they bought the Caselli-didn't care for
Celtic Dragon- Too cutesy-gave it to my daughter
Jungian- Seemed like a "thrown together deck" -didn't have much substance to me
Vision Quest- seemed like a commercialized theme deck- nothing here for me
I have 5 or 6 more I wouldn't mind passing on. I know now what I need in a deck and even though I do have some decks for collection purposes, I'm not interested in amassing decks. I'd rather pass on decks I know I'm no longer interested in.
