Hello everyone. I am a new but big fan of Robert M Place, I have both the Alchemical and Tarot of the Saints. The Tarot of the Saints was amazing and the book that came along with the deck was amazing, I learned allot, and treasure the book and the decks very much. My next deck by Mr. .Place that I hope to get is the Angels Tarot. Anyway I am really excited about his upcoming Buddha Tarot, the images with the link I have posted show some prints. My question is, does anyone know when they are going to be published, I am really excited about this deck, and can hardly wait. I also included the link to Robert M Place website, it shows cards from his other decks such as the Alchemical, and the Saints deck.

Hi there,

If you go to TAROT GARDEN and look in their Upcoming releases section, you will find some information about the Budda Tarot and when it will be released...

and find it quite pretty. While I know I'm focusing on other decks for awhile, I have wanted another Robert Place deck, but his Angels Tarot didn't agree with me. I like his Alchemical.

I realize this is different, but so far his summary of the story in his prints and his style is rather lovely, in a clean style. I think I like this for a change. I'd like this as a companion to more spare Asian poetry that I enjoy.

Some of the art resources on Buddhist art are intricate --- beautiful, but sometimes just too much to digest at times.

Thanks for the note, I preordered it as well.

Seems pretty complete as is, but I've a liking for the idea of working with Chakras and Tarot and there's a few intriguing hints in the deck design...that there might be more about this in the book...the book is separate.

It comes with a box and organdy bag to carry the booklet and cards. Pretty nice at the preorder price from Tarot Garden.

Of course, I do like booklets to carry around and books for reference, so this might be my meditative deck this Spring.

It's much 'lighter' in feeling than the deep tones of the Roots of Asia. Beautiful decks with similar themes, different feel. I approach Buddhism from a Westernized, Christian upbringing, so I actually sometimes need more of a Western touch to such things...

If you have questions or want a short card draw, you can pm me.

Mine just came from Tarot Garden, and I love it. Robert Place's artwork is so appealing. I like the fact that the deck comes with a bag, which is already a big improvement over Llewellyn's previous packaging -- but those flimsy boxes (not the outer packaging, but the white inner boxes for the cards) are irritating space-wasters, in my opinion.

Robert Place has an extensive esoteric background and knows whereof he speaks, so I'm looking forward to reading the booklet and getting to know the cards better. He is also one of the few artists whose unillustrated (or semi-illustrated) pips manage to be as elegant as the majors, in their way. The colours are vibrant, and the lines crisp -- quite lovely.

charming, inviting and a hard thing for me to pass up on as an art and meditation tarot.

My favorite reward thing is to have, after a learning curve, is an acquired taste...as if I was learning to eat an artichoke and getting through the tough outer layers...the center is approached slowly and after awhile, feel it out and then over time, one gets to the meltingly sweet heart...or if it's learning, it becomes easier and ease washes over one, a reward...like kayaking longish distances, etc...

Well, this washes over one with only a taste for Hermann Hesse's Siddharthia or yoga meditation or a summer at a Japanese language school with a comic of the life of Buddha...or a love of clean colors and graphics...so all the above, and now I am in deep affection. Plus the backs are this beautiful red...

Justice is eight, and strength is 11. That should be my nickname for my favorite tarots (JIEASIE - gee, I' easy).

Some people might not like the blue or tinted and full-figured dancing dakinis (nymphlike goddesses), but I find the effect--well, charming and beautiful. There's the grace of the art nouveau with quite a bit of depth in this booklet.
Some of the darker gods and goddesses that I'd find in historical Japanese or Tibetian Buddhism are signified, but not in a scary way...

Oh dear, I like it too much at first gulp. I think I'm in a tizzy after workout...

Mari

P.S. I ordered the book on Amazon.com for $9.00

I'm interested that Mari's deck included an organdy bag. Mine came with a black bag, which is transparent so you can see the deck through the bag. It's very Chinese-looking.

Mine came with a sheer black bag, also -- I think the material is organdy.

Oops. Thanks, Astraea. I thought organdy was a color. Shows how much I know! :P

As a Buddhist, it looks really cool to me, but as a newbie, I'm afraid I'd be TOTALLY lost trying to use it for anything other than maybe meditation.

What do you guys think?

Astraea  02 Mar 2004
Lee, the only reason I knew about organdy is that I used to have a skirt made of it (well lined, of course!). :D

mj07, I haven't had a chance to do much more than look at the cards briefly, so I don't have an opinion yet about how it will do as a reading deck. Robert Place's other decks work well for meditation and readings, alike, and I'm hoping the same is true of this one.

with a delight for Asian styles.

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/buddha/review.shtml

...an omission pointed out to me and an error:

Error: The dakinis are equivalent to pages, not queens.

Omission: There are twenty-three cards in the majors. Follow the link below to the book excerpt and then on the website at the end of the article, go back to the book contents and then select the Table of Contents. All the majors are named in order.

Mari, I liked your review. I have always liked Bob Place's work (I've even got one of his "Hermes" shirts). I will consider getting this deck as well. I wonder what the back look like though.

Well, I ordered the book on overstock.com, and will probably go pick up the deck today at lunch (got a border's gc for bday).

I was wondering if anyone new had picked it up, or if anyone had anything new to add? I"m sure I'll add my comments in the next few days.

mj07  03 May 2004
hmmm... I got it! All I can add is that it's far more beautiful than I thought it would be just looking at the pictures online, and, I'm learning a lot from the book! I don't think I'll actually try doing any spreads using this deck for a while. It will take some time to get comfortable with it.

SongDeva  03 May 2004
Well, I did drive out during my lunch 1.5 hours, and grabbed this deck, which I started to peruse whilst eating lunch at borders. Got through the majors before I decided to eat and read a book. :)

SongDeva  10 May 2004
Well, I really love it. The Color scheme, the uniqueness, the cute (in a new way) characters.
I can't wait to get my Companion.
I love the black bag...the colors coming through it look gorgeous!

In addition, the LWB seems to be particularly useful, and fits nicely into the bag with the deck.

I'm not sure why, other than a revenue scheme, the deck didn't :

A. Come as a set with the book
B. Come in a smaller, less expensive box, if it was going to be sold separately. That's a little disappointing, esp. when the deck along is $25 and the book is, full price, something like $15?

I believe the book will fit in the box should you decide to keep it that way. Anyone know?
