I'm just wondering why we refer to decks decended from the RWS as RSW clones, but decks decended from the Thoth are given the courtesy of not being refered to as clones?
Does anybody know?

Ops.
Sorry about that initial mixup...RSW=RWS, (sort of algabraec in it's soul...)
do you suppose that we don't refer to Crowley Clones as Crowley Clones in secret fear that dear Uncle Al will throw a whammy on us for disrespect?

I'll leave the precision to the semanticists. However, in a narrow sense, RWS clones are generally those that have essentially similar pictorial images to those of the Rider-Waite deck. Similarily, Thoth clones would generally be those decks that have essentially similar semi-pictorial elements to those of the Thoth. Although some will disagree that it's a good clone or that it's a clone at all, the only Thoth clone that I can think of is the Love is in the Earth Crystal Tarot by Melody of crystal fame.
(I mean "clone" in the computer sense of the word, like IBM clones.)

One difference is that some artist will go a.... say Gecko Tarot and then when they get to the 6 of swords draw a boat with a Gecko in it with 6 swords. I wouldn't call any deck with an illustrated minor arcana a RWS clone but when the decks are nearly identical I'd call it a clone.
On the other hand the Cosmic Tribe bears a great resemblence in style as the Thoth most of the cards aren't as nearly identical to the original dck as a rws clone is.

There isn't as many Thoth clones as Rider Waite, most of them have a mix of Rider Waite and Thoth - The Tarot of the Spirit is a sort of Thoth/Rider Waite clone. The Minors are pure Thoth but the Majors have aspects of Rider Waite in them. The Rohrig is another Thoth clone, again very different to the Thoth but regarded as a clone because the symbolism is the same.

Isn't that new German deck, The Via tarot, a Thoth clone as well?
I saw bits of it online, and it looked VERY Thothy to me... ;)

In my humble opinion, decks such as Tarot of the Spirit ceck and the Gill Tarot deck could perhaps more correclty be viewed as decks inspired by the general tradition of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn which is the same general tradition that inspired the RWS and Thoth decks. (However, in the case of Thoth, Crowleyian Thelemic influences are added.)
