Buying New Decks ...And Dealing With The Disappointment

I have to start by saying that I don't buy new decks very often.
Most of the time it's because I make very little money, and when I do have money, I am more likely to spend it on someone else, rather than myself.
And besides, decks seem to come to me, in strange round-about ways, so I don't often have to spend money on them, in order to acquire them.
But recently, I had the extra cash, and a trip to a Border's...and I decided to buy a couple of new ones.
But then, the store didn't have the ones that were on the top of my list, and I bought something just because I knew that if I did not buy a deck right then and there...the money would be used for something silly...like rent.
And I AGONIZED over what to buy! Luckily for me, I was keeping up on different decks thanks to this forum, and I made what I thought was an informed choice.
Crow's Magick was my first disappointment.
I liked all the cards I saw online, and here...so I assumed I would like the rest of the deck too. It turns out to be masculine, and gutsy, but also a little too monochromatic...and all the cards start looking sort of the same.
I wanted more crows..instead there was a lot of other birds and animals that didn't seem to make much sense in thier use on each card.
and there are key words...some of which are confounding and confusing...so I figured that it would at least work as an oracle deck for me.
Putting away that deck, with a disappointed sigh, I eagerly opened the New Vision.
I thought...heck, even if I don't like this one, it is good for comparison studies with the RWS.
Some cards made me delighted, others made me furious! and still others, had a pointeless Image, while others I felt absolutely ambivelant about.
I have never seen a deck that made me feel such strong emotions before!
And yet...even trying it out as a reversal deck, (I don't normally do reversals, so I thought I would give in to a new learning experience!) it still did nothing for me.
I am considering giving both decks away...or maybe trading or something.
But I'm wondering if I shouldn't read with them for a little longer, and try to work out what I don't like about both decks.
I am also wondering if my disappointment comes from the fact that I spent actual money on them, instead of acquiring them in the usual way.(I cherish the decks that find thier way to me, without me seeking them out)
Or maybe both these decks just suck.
It's a hard call for me.
Anyone out there have any ideas?

I had Crows Magic too. And I felt the same way about it. I tried and tried to read with it but we never clicked. To metalic feeling for me. No warmth no emotion. I ended up giving it to the pizza delivery boy (long story) and he loves it. So go figure. I think if you offer it someone will want it. I kept my deck for almost a year just to be sure. But when the right person came along with that look in their eye it caused me no pain to give it up.
I just gave away my Witches Tarot and I have a few others that I'm going to trade. For sure Art Nouveau by Matt Myers. And I'm still looking over my list. There comes a point when you just know this ones not for me. And you bless it and let it move on. Just out of curiosity what decks were on the top of your list? Namaste

I can sympathize with you, but I look at it this way, If it is a deck I cannot "click" with, I put away for the person that will eventually come into my life that it will be perfect for.
It took 6 years but my first deck, The Enchanted Tarot (beautiful- but no click) finally found a new home. And with that, I did not feel like it was a wasted purchase, but a beautiful gift.

Majecot, that's a great idea!
Pretty much the reason I give away the decks in my collection is because so often they seem just right for someone else that comes along. Although sometimes this takes many years.
Sometimes a decade or so!
Lark, the decks on the top of my list were the Whimsical and the Vision Tarot (not the New Vision...oh well!)
And I almost bought the Fairy Ring Oracle at the time, but I knew my Froud Faerie Oracle was on its way to me, and I didn't want to devote my time to two different Fae courts as it were, at the same time!

I've gone through this too. I go to store wanting a specific deck and they don't have it. But because I'm in "deck mode" I end up buying something that I only feel luke warm about.
I would trade the decks on AT and only trade them for a decks you really, really want.
Lark, What do you think about that Matt Myers deck? I have it too and never use it. I orginally bought it because someone said it was great for relationship spreads and all you had to do was read what the characters in the cards were doing. But I still never use it.

I have to agree..almost every time i am disappointed by a deck, it is when i went to the store with a deck in mind, it wasn't in stock, and i HAD to buy something... so i would come home with some deck on a whim.. and i always wound up selling it on ebay or something..
i just don't seem to have any patience.. and it seems so 'sad' coming home empty handed.. still, you'd think i'd learn my lesson :o)
definitely trade the decks.. or you could try to sell them on ebay or amazon marketplace.. then buy what you really wanted...

ya know it's kinda funny-
the other night I was playing poker, and one of the games is called "Pass the Trash"
you are delt 5 cards- you get rid of 3 you don't want, the next round you get rid of two, then you do one, passing to the left player each time- now you have your playing hand...anyway...while playing, somewhere in the wanderings of my mind I remembered a few old threads regarding a deck exchanging circle and such- with the two together I came up with the idea to do a 'pass the tarot trash'........
some how everyone with a deck that did not agree with them- they could send it off to someone else- it would be a suprise as to what deck you got- the only snag would be if you recived the same deck you sent out- but there are ways around that problem.
|

That sounds pretty fun. The only dissapointment would be if you received a deck you already owned. But I like the suprise element of it. If someone wants to figure out the specifics, I'd be game. :)

The Spiral Tarot, Tarot of the Sephiroth, Art Nouveau (Castelli), and Gendron were disappointments for me. I've been keeping them in case the bug bites like it does on some of my other decks.....but I know it just isn't going to happen. I'm much more careful about the decks I buy now and I try to see if I can see the whole deck before I do. I also am cutting back on the decks I buy just for the art. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but when it comes down to it, I really only read with a few decks.

I just sat here for an hour watching the Andy Griffith Reunion Show and slowly looking at this deck over and over before I decide to offer it for trade. I bought it for the majors that I had heard were great. The colors are beautiful and there are a few majors that I like the Tower, Strength and Moon. But I hate the pips and all the people look exactly alike to me, except with different color hair. The woman in the cards are so clingy and seem like such victims. I'm sorry but yuck. Maybe it would be good for relationship spreads. I know there's someone out there who will appreciate it and use it, but I also know that someone isn't me. Two other decks I might trade are Gendron and Connolley. There's a new book coming out for the Gendron in January. So we'll see.

Oh my, obtaining them the old way; I'd have two decks by now. My boyfriend asks me why I need all my decks, when one will do the job? I love them for their artwork and mystery.
Well Ebay and metaphysical shops have been my main suppliers.
Tarot Cards are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. ( I give credit to half of this statement to Forest Gump )
What kind of art work appeals to you, abstract, realistic, classic or surrealism? That is how I would choose my deck. Personally, I still love my Universal Waite deck and clones.

Chronata, Lark, and Jen :
I know exactly how you feel. I came to this forum after having years of tarot experience, but my conservative approach to decks and very limited artist's income had kept me from buying a new deck for at least 6 yrs.
My first three purchases after joining AT were the Robin Wood (which is now on my 'to trade' list) the Art Nouveau (Myers ) "the barbie deck" I heard someone call it - traded away about a year ago!
And the Gendron...which I traded recently ;)
I have to say that there are decks that mystify and don't 'click' (Thoth) but do not actually feel like a dead fish in your hands. I took about 6 months to warm up to the Thoth - that deck is like a college degree in Tarot, compared to the pretenders... of which everyone must make up their own minds. A joke deck to me might be an oracle or wisdom and truth deck to you.
I learned a lot from those awful bookstore purchases (love on-line browsing, more fun and more effective) but I have really learned more about myself as a reader and as a person from the decks I had to admit were anathema to me.
As for the Myers deck, I have one more thing to say: I have noticed that many artists who create tarot decks feel a need to incorporate their own self portrait into one or many of the cards. This has become a warning sign for me.
And - it is nice to know I am not the only really sad buyer of certain decks. It is such a sad experience. Trading them is, however, a joy.
Anyone made any joyful trades lately?

NOT buying some low-cost decks that vanish never to be seen again.
I thought once there was a magic emporium getting rid of old decks on ebay and now I wonder if there are really tarot trick decks....I don't hear of any...
There used to be a deck shop that went out of business that had some odd decks at times...but the few titles that I didn't buy there seem to be the ones that I remember. Still, they weren't must-haves and once in awhile I think of that wierd offshoot of an Etteilla or something similar and the path not taken.
And if the deck is meant for me, it usually appears at some point..

Usually I don't have many dissapointments, because I'm pretty sure of what I want, and I look for pictures of it over and over until I'm satisfied... then I buy it.
The only thing I really regreted (and I'll always regret it) was, on my birthday this year, my friends offered my the "Mantegna Tarot". The deck is beautiful, but... it wasn't tarot. And I was so stupid I didn't even give it a try. So I went to the store and traded for the "renaissance tarot" by williams. I opened the box, gave one look at the cards and hated it. I felt so stupid by trading a beautiful deck by one which was horrible to me.
Thankly I already got rid of renaissance, I traded it by "cloisters", which I love.
Anjo
What a coincidence, so many people wanting to get rid of the "art nouveau" and they're on my wishlist (both from castelli and from myers)... that's how the world works, I guess.

i have been disappointed in many decks but i'm coming to believe that the disappointment i feel is a fault within myself--not the deck. i know after years at salivating over the illuminated deck, i felt disappointed when it was finally in my hands. i don't know what i expected. maybe the holy grail of all tarot decks which it wasn't. after some inner debate, i decided that the deck had much merit. it was me that needed more from it than it could reasonably give. after that decision, i have felt satisfied with the deck.
i admit some decks are everything i want and more; however, it's important to keep my standards/expectations in a low range rather than high. that way i know for sure how i perceive a deck and give the deck a fair chance.

The Gendron,
I was really looking forward to it as the reviews I'd read said it was goddess based. I don't like the way she's used the same images in different cards and I think that the images are really badly cut as well. I'll probably trade it one day.

I 've just received The Tarot of Prague and the Gendrom.
The first one exceeded all my expectations eventhough I'd
heard all the reviews about it, and when I saw that kind of work suddenly all my standards changed and when it was time for the Gendrom, I felt it was in another league, it has some beautiful
cards but ( a HUGE but) for me are the Pips, they seem like
they were taken from some silly soap opera , I just donīt figure out if I like it or hate it or something in beetween, I just know itīs
not meant for me to do any kind of readings.
I feel confused.

I definatley know about "deck mode" that's how I ended up with the Enchanted Tarot (the one that is currently Tarot of the Hidden Folk).
Has anyone ever bought a deck for a single card in it? It's a little bit like buying a cd for one song. Well I've done it several times and I'm likely to do it again. I'm not sure if I can work with the Stairs of Gold Tarot (I've seen all of the cards on tarot.com) but I love the Hanged Man and Star cards so i'm probably gonna go for it.

I think Truthsayer makes an excellent point and I have been forced to reconsider my own hopes and expectations many times - and not only in regard to Tarot decks ;)
The Gendron is, like so many decks, one that may speak well to some people, but it was also one of my greatest disappointments. A worse one was the Ancestral Tarot - I like the paintings but it never worked as a tarot deck at all.
Reason I say it was a worse disappointment is that I paid much more for it in a book store than I paid for the Gendron and it was earlier in my 'collecting' career, so it hurt that much more. I gave it away to a friend who loved it.
Latest disapointmemnt was the Shapeshifter Tarot. I am going to trade the set eventually. Also maybe the Osho Zen. I like the O-Z but the art sometimes bothers me and I can't really get behind the tone of the book. I do not read well with it the few times I tried. Those 2 deck sets were expensive and I had high hopes for them...oh well!
Many decks have made me very happy, so there you go.

As I see in this thread the biggest dissapointments were
by far Matt Myerīs and the Gendrom....
Hopefully this will make authors and publishers alike to deliver
us better art. I also expect that Tarot just donīt become
a consumption product like cheeseburgers where maybe
only 10 % of all decks are really worth something.
I just canīt stand the Anytheme Tarot decks.

Although 10 percent may be a good global average based on all decks ever made in the 20th century, I think that 10 percent might be too high an estimate as regards new decks. As more and more of new decks are derivative of existing decks or are unabashedly gimmicky in the interests of taking advantage of consumer interest in all things tarot or New Age, the figure is probably much less than 10 percent when it comes to new decks.

Chronata (and others),
Yes, I've already been disappointed, and I only own 9 decks, as I was saying earlier tonight on another thread.
The Victoria Regina was a disppointment, although I was determined to like it at first. I didn't like how real people were often used, and I didn't like the heavy Industrial Revolution spin (guns for swords...come on!). There are other things that the author(s) could have concentrated on, imo. The cards are also too large. The one very cool thing about this deck was the bag it came with -- black velvet with blue satin lining, even tassels on the strings. Very nice indeed.
Interesting that several of you mentioned disappointment with Art Nouveau decks. I purchased the Castelli deck this weekend, and it's so-so. After looking at the Myers deck online, I can at least say that I like the Castelli deck better, at least based on what I've seen (the Myers deck doesn't look very art nouveau to me).
Someone mentioned (lark?) that the Myers deck featured clingy or weak-looking women (sorry--paraphrasing by memory here). I think that the Castelli deck is somewhat this way too. For those of you who are familiar with it, check out those kings... This bothers me. But, the style of the deck is definitely Art Nouveau, which is truthfully the main reason I got it.
I like the "Pass the Tarot Trash" idea!! That could be quite fun.

Interesting: I have seen only the preview cards by Castelli and I thought 'ah - an art nouveau style deck that really is what it says it is'
because there is nothing very art nouveau about Myers' - and he loves to depict himself, and handsome men with tight pants, which shouldn't bother me, but it does. Artwise it added nothing.
Castelli deck was on my 'possible wants' but now I will re-consider and try to see all the cards before I buy!
Collecting is quite aside from my tarot use and study, so I keep them seperated (at least in my mind).

I used to have the Castelli deck but my daughter took it. I didn't care. The thing about with the Kings is ( if I'm remembering right) that they are all older men without shirts on with young women drapped all over them. Now maybe that appeals to some but for me Oh Yuck. Call me picky but sometimes just a couple of cards like that can ruin a whole deck for me.

It not very often I get disappointed with new deck purchases, mainly because every deck I've bought I have researched, well some for a few minutes :D , but I have made some good choices - the disappointment comes when I realise that the bond I hoped to get with the deck doesn't happen, but this is usually my inexperience with non-traditional decks.
The only deck I had a real disappointment with was 'The tarot of the Spirit'. As soon as I took the plastic wrap off, I disliked the deck. Somewhere on here, I posted my dislike of this deck lol. It was the Majors and Court cards that disappointed me the most, they were terrible, like nightmare scenes, people with no faces or eyes. Well I wrapped it back up to send back the next day, still not sure of how I had managed to end up with such an ugly deck but overnight something happened.
I looked it over again the next day as I was getting ready to send it back, and I realised that the Blind Hermit was something I could relate to, being solitary, looking into himself for answers, he didn't need eyes to see.
Suddenly the deck spoke to me, I didn't see the uglyness of the day before. It is now one of the decks that I couldn't get rid of, this deck does speak to you on a spiritual level. Its still not a pretty deck but it is one of my favourites and I'm still not sure how that happened. lol

Probably one of the worst disappointments was the Gendron. The majors are exquisite, among the most lovely and detailed I've seen yet. But anyone who is considering this REALLY should check out the Pentacles and Swords more carefully. Hideous! Nausea inducing! A mishmash of cut-and-paste collage which includes disembodied heads and a glaring clash of modern vs medieval influences. I used this as a majors-only (and courts, sometimes) deck.
P.S. Surprising myself, I actually liked both the Myers and the Castelli deck for the art - the artwork on the Myers is very detailed indeed, except for the fact that the figures, especially the courts, look like they're from '80s/early '90s soap operas - the Bold and Beautiful in particular. :P

I also agree, naked and bare breasted ladies do nothing for me. I do not use them with my clients, for moral reasons. I wonder if the people that publish these decks ever take into consideration to whom they are marketing these decks to? No offense to the men, but I feel the majority of purchasers are female. Personally I could do with less nudity, some may say it is art, to me it cheapens my profession. Have you ever seen a naked lady on a stethoscope?

The Spiral Tarot was a HUGE disappointment to me. Of course, it came to me the way of most disappointing decks.. I had gone to borders for something else that was out of stock...
I was drawn to the size of the Spiral.. and I thought art on the cover was intriguing... so I bought it..
I looked at it in the car and put it up for sale on Amazon the second I walked through the door..
I HATED the minors. They looked like they were from a completely different deck. ...
I know a lot of people love this deck - just wasn't my taste..

Dolphinprincess, the Spiral deck was also a disappointment for me too. It's not the minors, I've actually had quite a few useful insights from them. It's the borders, I hate them, they just look so busy and they don't seem to match the cards. Red and swirly purple. I quite like the cards but the borders just put me off using them completely.

Lark - Thanks for going into more detail...now I can take that deck off my list for good. Bare naked people don't bother me, it is how they are drawn and what situation they are in. This may offend some, but Myers manages a lewdness with the way he draws men's clothed crotches and rear ends that just bothers me, and I liked his deck in the majors - sort of, but yes - as Demonesse said - the people annoyed me just as soap opera people drive me bats ;) -
I was getting a spine x-ray on Tuesday and the waiting room had a TV with some soap on it. I admit to watching some smaltzy movies, but ...
I got the Rohrig in a trade very recently, and the fact is, it has many great things going for it, but overll- it is very macho. Floating bare boobs, sports cars, etc.
Hate to trade it, maybe I can get used to it?
The Universal, by Miller, however, has alot of male energy that is good. Love it.
P.S. ~~ Mystic Z - You will be so happy you passed on the Gendron. Photo Collage is such a rip-off when used to pop out a quick deck. Melanie Gendron's own drawings (on majors) would have made a great deck if she had used it alone!

Hi everyone,
I've read all the threads here and it got me to thinking about the decks that I hate and love. It occurred to me that I can really hate a deck sometimes and other times I can really love it. I have had decks which on first impressions I have absolutely hated. I'll put them away and three months later and totally out of the blue I'll look at it and think 'this is great, I love it, why did I dislike it so much at first? Three months later 'Oh I really dont like this deck, what made me think I could get on with it?' and so on...............
The Haindl is one of those decks for me. Sometimes I love it, I think its amazing, other times errrhhhh (screws nose up!).
Do you ever feel like that? Has anyone ever started a thread on decks that you have a love/hate relationship with I wonder??

BTW- More than any other deck except the Magickal Tarot (which riddles you into total insanity) the Haindl has brought me readings of pure ecstacy, and yet, if I contemplate it at all - I hate it, or at least heartily dislike it.

I never buy a deck the first time I see it. I don't buy it until until I feel a pull , an "I have to have this deck" pull.
Depending on the deck, this could take a few days to a few weeks. But I've never been disappointed with a deck, except the ones I bought and didn't use this system.

My disappointment decks all dated from the time I started buying lots of decks, when I had just discovered there was more than rws and I was determined and impatient to find the right deck for me.
Now I don't buy so quickly, I wait a while before buying - the exception being a really good deal (usually on ebay or second hand). I don't have tarot shops in my home town and I am used to buying on the internet, so I am not tempted to buy decks on a whim before having a proper look.
I have just traded the last deck I wanted to get rid of. I am very particular in decks at the moment and I guess I would have to be very lucky to find a deck on my wish list in a trade, so I trade for a deck that interests me - I have nothing to loose as I have finished with the deck I am sending off and it is a chance to get to know a deck I would otherwise not obtain.

Oh my, I thought I would never find a deck I did not like, but........................Merlin, the author Stewart is a big joke,
he as saw fit to arrange the Major Arcana. For instance Sun is the second card, Fool the seventh, he has sought to rewrite Tarot.
The Art work is Great, I feel sorry for Miranda Gray to put such work on laughable cards.

WolfSpirit.. i completely related to your post :o)
When i get into something, I have a habit of wanting 'everything' i can find on the subject... no different with tarot... then i soon find myself with a bunch of stuff i haven't used - and feeling quite overwhelmed. I find that I then wind up in a viscious cycle of buying / selling / trading...
I am trying to keep my impulses at a minimum - although its not always easy.. and I'm trying to fine tune my collection to decks I will really enjoy and use...
