...somewhere in the last week or so. I think Diane Wilkes actually wrote it one of her reviews, underneath her credit byline.
Sounds like fun. I gathered that she was considering different books from Jane Austen's works, but other than that, I haven't a clue about the art or anything else.
Great news.

Oh, Jane Austen deck. What a great idea! If it is photo-collage, it has to be Colin Firth as Mr Darcy.

I love Jane Austen, and I love Colin Firth (mrrrrrow!)
Don't want him in the deck though. I'd prefer to have paintings.
Someone let the author know, so she can adjust accordingly. ;)
Was he not hot in Bridget Jone's Diary, which ended up being a modern day Pride & Prejudice?
Nobody missed that, right? Mark *Darcy*, and they hated each other, then loved each other? Etc?
Ok, off topic here, anyway. :)

to my knowledge, i've never read one of jane austin's books. guess i don't know what i've been missing. ;) i used to be more of an charlotte and emily bronte afficianado. i think they lived in the same era as austin. as i've gotten older, i'm more into sci/fi fantasy.
maybe i'll have time to read something by her during christmas. i'm not a big romance fan though. i hope there's more to the book than that. anyone have a specific title to recommend? maybe one this mr. darcy is in?

Is the most famous. Mr Darcy is in that one. My personal favorite is Persuasion. They are romance, but you just get pulled into them. I'm having a hard time explaining what their appeal is. It's almost like reading a different language, the writing is so different than what we're used to. And so are the manners and the rules of society. I guess it's an aquired taste. But once you have it, you have it for a life time.
I have read my collection of Jane Austen countless time over the years. And collected many books on Jane Austen. She also left some unfinished manuscripts that have been completed by other authors, those are fun to read but never as good as the original. Well I just realized I collect Jane Austen stuff and I didn't even know it! I have all the movies related to her books, BBC and Hollywood.
SongDeva, hey, I saw the same thing in Bridget Jone's Diary. But I'm way off topic here so just to say again Jane Austen Tarot best news I've heard in a long time. And if anybody hears more please post any info. Namaste

My friend Lee Bursten told me that the Jane Austen Tarot was being talked about here...I am so happy to find more folks who love Jane Austen and tarot...
Lo Scarabeo asked me if I was interested in doing a book/deck, and Jane Austen immediately came to mind. In the Storyteller Tarot (which Arnell Ando illustrated), the Lovers card was based on Pride and Prejudice. The image is of the scene where Darcy is writing a letter to his sister and Caroline Bingley watches his every ink scratch...and Darcy watches Lizzy, who is completely oblivious to him. You can see why I chose that scene for the Lovers...
While I, too, am a big Colin Firth fan (just ordered Bridget Jones Diary on DVD...and recently bought Fever Pitch...and I of course own P&P with CF), I am pretty sure that the Jane Austen Tarot won't be a photocollage deck .
Lark, I agree with you wholeheartedly about Jane's writing being almost a different language. Not in the sense of it being indecipherable (far from it!), but her use of language is so skillful and subtle and entertaining that describing it as being "delicious" is almost literal. I feel the same way about P.G. Wodehouse--the use of language is extremely amusing AND so tasty!
Truthsayer, I am also a big Bronte fan--esp. Emily. There's a wonderful novel by May Sinclair that is a fictionalized version of the Bronte family. Austen isn't much like any of the three Bronte women writers...though Mansfield Park has a bit in common with Jane Eyre, in terms of their heroines both being very Hanged One-like in their approach to life.
The deck is very much in the beginning stage, in that I found matching the cards to specific scenes and characters more challenging and time-consuming than I initially expected. Still, it is moving along, and I am getting more and more excited about it as I flesh things out. All of the major works are featured, some more than others...but I don't use the Juvenilia or the unfinished novels, and I only use Lady Susan for one card...
At some point, I will put something on Tarot Passages specifically about the JA Tarot, but I didn't want to push it on anyone...
All of the posts showing your interest in the deck is very heartening to me. Thank you.

Diane, thank you sooooo much for coming over and giving us that great news first hand. My mind has been buzzing all day with the characters and what card they might represent, so I can just imagine how you must feel. But what fun! Tommorow I think we'll be brain storming some ideas around here.
Like Lizzy's Mr. Colins, truly one of the most ridiculous and hilarious characters ever written. He's got to be included but where? He's not even wise enough to be the fool. Give us some peeks into your deck when you can. We'll be waiting eagerly.
And thank-you for taking an the challange of creating it. Namaste

Diane, so fun to have you over here! Thanks for coming to share with us. This is one of the most exciting Tarot projects I've heard about so far. I really love Austen and Bronte too. I didn't at first, it seemed too slow moving when I first read it. For some reason I didn't fall in love with Austen until the first of those wonderful movies came out. Then I went back and read the books, and just delighted in the wit and spirit, the glimpse into the period, and of course... the romance. Oooh, and Mansfield Park is just about my favorite.

Diane, thank you so much for posting! I adore all the Jane Austen books, and like so many have re-read them numerous times. My there are some wonderful characters and scenes for you to pick from, but I can see where it would be a lengthy task. I still like Pride and Prejudice the best, but they are all little jewels. Her knowledge of people is exquisite, and her humour is wonderful beyond anyone else. When you compared her to Wodehouse I could see immediately what you meant.

Diane: Thank you for stopping by and giving us an update. I am soooo relieved that it won't be a photo collage deck!! I will anxiously await this deck!
Truthsayer: I don't like or read romance novels but Pride and Predudice is different. The heroine is a strong, opinionated and outspoken young woman who verbally whoops butt whenever the need arises. ;-) WELL worth checking out.

This is so exciting! I love Jane Austen... and the Bronte sisters... and just about any female author from around that time period. I have read them all so many times that one would think I should know them by heart now. However, this deck gives me a very good reason to read them all once again! :)

lark, I knew Mr. Collins had to get a card...and it took me a while to decide which one. Even though I normally have a high opinion of the Hierophant and prefer positive images for that card, I had to go with Mr. Collins for Trump V because of his dependence on The Book of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. His judgmental and morally self-righteous approach to Lydia's elopement capped it for me.
(I love talking about this stuff with people familiar with JA and Tarot!)
Firemaiden, I am so happy to hear you love Mansfield Park, since, as you know some people think it's the "boring" JA novel. A LOT of the JA cards are based on Mansfield Park, which I have fallen in love with all over again. P&P is the one I've read most, but MP is my current beloved. It's so rich! And it gave me so many perfect tarot "matches," both Majors and Minors. And yes, her books are "scathing comedies of manners." (Right now I'm thinking of Mrs. Elton from Emma and giggling!)
Marion, I find myself so attracted to that witty, light writing. In JA's case, there is a lot underneath the wit, but when I need a lift, I go to either Wodehouse or Austen. Both serve as anti-depressants.
Astraea, thank you for the kind words about my site. I am very lucky (and grateful) for Lee's contributions to it. Lee is too modest to say so, but he's already been an immense help to me with his feedback on my JA Tarot companion book. He will be the first person I mention in my acknowledgments.
Royal Cat, I am also a big fan of female writers from this period...I think you'd like that May Sinclair book I mentioned...the name of it is The Three Sisters. There was/is a series of books under the imprint of "Virago" and many are neglected "classics" by women. The May Sinclair is one of them. Another writer you might really like is Emily Eden, as she has been compared to JA.
I know I am going a bit off topic, and I apologize for it. I don't really know how stringent the Aeclectic Forum is on the subject.

I thought of the Hierophant last night too. I think that's the perfect choice.
Fanny's parents would make a great 5 of coins.

lark, we are really on the same page! The Knight of Cups is Willoughby! Amazing that you nailed it so completely. Sense and Sensibility is represented well, too, Demonesse--three of the four Pentacle courts are from S&S, too.
Fanny's parents are could be models for the Five Pents, but I have another book and individual in mind for that card.
And yes, the Minors will be fully illustrated. Those are my favorite kind of decks, too.
One card that has me really stuck is Temperance, lark, so if you have any ideas...please feel free to share! I want the card to represent a dynamic, magical blending because that's how I see the card...but I can't find anything that proactive so far.

Jane Fairfax and Anne Elliot. They may not be dynamic but they both possess alot of Temperance qualities.
Anne was always moderate, and balanced she was the only one in her family who saw the sense in her father removing to Bath. She has a calm capability, a sense of inner guidance. The incident in Lime shows that side of her. She also showed a confident, optimism, frank expression and an open minded independance when dealing with her father and Lady Russell. When her second chance came to have Capt. Wentworth she went for it. She knew that tempering your life and finding the right combination of things that make you well and happy was a very valuable thing
Jane Fairfax is a different energy. She has always seemed a little mysterious to me. Still waters run deep. She had the perfect blending of talents for a young lady, accomplished in playing and singing, modest, beautiful with the proper view points and self restaint. And has there ever been a character with more patience than poor Jane. Adored by her silly aunt Miss Bates ( I love Miss Bates I hope she's in the cards.) Made the unwilling protege of the self absorbed Mrs. Elton. And having to hide her engagement to Frank Churchill, for who knew how long. Yes if Temperance is blending and patience Jane had it in spades. Not to mention that Mr Knightly greatly admired her . And we all know his opinion is incomparable.
I feel so honored that you asked my opinion. And answering this has been the most fun . Thank you.

One of my favorite satrical shorts is Northranger Abbey...
If not for Diane Wilkes, I would have never thought to revisit the net for delicious Tea and Crumpets and Jane Austen links!
That will be fun this weekend.
I like my J.A. in a big dose to browse through once a year and have the Complete Novels big book.
She's much more subtle than the Brontes, but once in awhile I do like Victorian gasp-light thrillers, just like silly and romantic Egyptian tarots...

lark, you are a god(dess)send. Jane Fairfax! I was thinking of her for the Two of Swords, when she is silent about so much and must choose whether to take the governess position or trust in Frank Churchill. But I love the idea of her as Temperance...she has so many talents and yet she is temperate...very temperate...maybe TOO temperate. I am going to hit the book again and see what I can see...but I am really thrilled with this concept. Thank you for your help. I feel like I have found a JA kindred spirit!
Anne Elliot is the Queen of Swords. She even has the "widow" aspect to her, in a sense.
Jane Fairfax as Temperance. She even looks the part! Oh, bless you, lark!

Diane, I'm so happy I could help. I hope Jane Fairfax passes the test and ends up on the card. She'd make a beautiful Temperance.
The Two of Swords I see Harriet Smith. Was there ever anybody as undecided as her. Always blinded by Emma's opinion. And in desperate need of some quiet time to look into her own heart.

Hi Mari, sorry to ask such a mundane question, but do you have the hardcover Complete Novels or the paperback? Do you find it to be so large that it's uncomfortable to read, or is it physically manageable? I ask because I recently bought a complete Norton Shakespeare (hardcover), and while I'm thoroughly enjoying reading it, the book is so large that it's rather uncomfortable. I'm trying to decide if I should get the Complete Novels for Austen or just pick up the separate novels at the used bookstore.
Thanks --

that cover 1183 pages and the typeset is fine for me, but some people find that it is small.
The book to me has a small weight.
Because of painting and kayaking, I can for short periods cart around a somewhat weighty bookbags, but you are right, it can become pesky. I don't prop the Complete Jane Austen on my knees comfortably. I put a pillow on my knees and hike my feet up on the sofa and then lay down the book. on the pillow
In weight, it equals two decks, two softcover books and a journal that fits a bookbag... It is twice the size of my Everyman's Library English edition of the Divine Comedy (three volumes, about 800 pages), which I pack in the same bookbag with the Dante Tarot and the Silver Mantegna.
I do have one of the complete Shakespeare books as well, but I usually put it on a desk or table.

lark, again, we are in accord...I originally slotted Harriet in the Two of Swords for the very same reasons you name. I eventually chose another card that seemed to me to speak to another aspect of Harriet Smith...the Seven of Cups. Any woman who can be "in love" with three different men--one of them, twice--in a year seemed to resonate strongly with the romantic daydreaming quality of that card.
Lee, I'd go with the cheap paperbacks...though there is a 2 volume inexpensive hardback edition that includes (if memory serves) Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park.
And, of course, all of these are are online as well in many places, including the link to Pemberley Mari provided.
Hi, Riccardo...try and stay awake long enough to read them!
Now I should get back to Pride and Prejudice. Poor Jane has caught the flu...or is it a cold?

I was in Barnes and Noble yesterday, and noticed that they have a special edition of most of Austen's novels. The books are hardback, but small, and cost $4.95. This might be a good option for anyone who wants to try one or more of her books.

I did not see the deck in the early 2005 catalogue, but I believe you are correct that the best artist will be chosen...when I saw decks authored by Lee Bursten and Rev. Gina Pace, the art was beautifully done.

I am also a huge fan of JA and while I have successfully resisted buying more decks (I have two that I am determined to fully master before I buy more) I will definitely make an exception for this deck when it is available. Looking back over the thread, I would like to suggest Elizabeth Bennett for Queen of Swords, after all, isn't "prejudice" the epitome of allowing a clever mind to believe it already has all the correct answers? As well as a strong predilection for indulging in verbal wordplay, sometimes verging on cruelty for the sake of wit?
peace, sechat

Someone help me! I'm going to faint! Colin Firth as Mr Darcy!
For me, Mr Darcy will always be Sir Lawrence Olivier. Okay ... so that version of the movie was terrible in a multitude of ways, but I'll never forget the scene where he first proposes to Elizabeth (Greer Garson) and she rejects him. Wonderful.
As a Janeite ... I can't wait for the deck ... but then, with the exception of Mr Darcy, my visual mind pictures of the characters in her books are so complete and so real, that I fear terrible disappointment.
